  Oddly, he gave me the strength to forgive myself. Something had changed Rey, corrupted him from the inside and I was a victim of the rot that’d taken hold. At a certain point, he’d stopped being the older brother I’d loved and became the sadistic bastard who’d raped me as punishment for loving someone else.

  We’d walked away from the 13th Street Boys gang life without looking back. Changed our names and identities so none of Rey’s lieutenants came looking for us and then embraced a future that was free of the blood and turmoil that Rey had forced on us.

  Sometimes I was afraid that it was all a dream — that Rey was still alive and we were never going to be free of his shadow — but he was truly gone.

  The little house was gone, too.

  We threw the bodies in the house along with Rey’s body and torched the entire place to the ground.

  Nothing but cinders remained.

  No one would know to look for Rey’s body out in the middle of nowhere, anyway. Urban city thugs didn’t usually venture far from their territory, which was exactly why Kane had chosen the abandoned little place.

  To the world we were just a newly married couple out on their honeymoon but to Kane and I…we were finally free to start our real lives as we saw fit.

  It might include a white picket fence and a couple of kids.

  It might include an RV and lots of travel.

  But one thing we knew for sure — we’d never let anyone stand in our way of total happiness together ever again.
