Safe Guard (The DeLuca Family Book 2)

by Amy Reece

“Before we begin, I’d like to assure those that might be worried,” Father Ortega looked at Hugh’s mother as he spoke, “that Hugh and Christine were married in the sight of God earlier this afternoon at Our Lady of Fatima, but they wanted to share this special ceremony with all of you.”

Hugh could swear he heard his mother’s sigh of relief. The preliminaries were soon over and it was time to recite the vows he’d written. “Christine Danielle Hart-DeLuca, I love you with my whole heart and soul. You are my best friend, my lover, my staunchest ally, and my toughest critic. I promise to be your greatest fan, your partner in parenthood if we are blessed with children, your accomplice in mischief, your consolation in disappointment, and your ally in conflict. This is my sacred vow to you, my love and my equal in all things.”

Then it was Chrissy’s turn, as soon as she wiped her eyes and could speak. “Hugh, I love you with everything I am. I take you to be my partner for life and I promise to live in truth with you and to communicate with you fully and fearlessly. I pledge to you my devotion, my love, my faith, and my honor.”

They exchanged the rings they’d chosen, simple platinum bands, and Father Ortega said a prayer. Then it was time to kiss his bride. Yeah, they’d already been married for several hours and had snuck in a quick consummation after the ceremony at the church, but this felt like the real ceremony, with their families and friends surrounding them, cheering him on as he dipped her dramatically.

“If you drop me, Mr. DeLuca, you will sleep on the couch tonight with Bob.”

He grinned and kissed her again. “I wouldn’t dream of it, Mrs. DeLuca.”

Again, I’d like to thank Agent Wayne Harvey of the New Mexico State Police for his invaluable insight into police procedurals. If I’ve screwed it up, the fault is mine, of course.

My amazing publishing team at Limitless is the absolute best! Thanks Lori, Elizabeth, Toni, and Deranged Doctor Designs especially.

Special thanks to my writing group, Maslow’s Ding-Dongs, for their beta reads and scene critiques. Keep holding my feet to the fire!

As always, my family has my back and supports my writing career, encouraging me to keep it going, even when I doubt myself.

More than anything, I’d like to send a HUGE thanks to my readers! I love to hear from you! I write for the pure joy of storytelling, but you make the journey particularly sweet.

  About the Author

Amy Reece lives in New Mexico with her incredible husband and two ridiculous mutts, Greta and Sodapop. When she’s not writing, she’s teaching high school English and social studies or maybe wandering through a thrift store in search of the next lucky teapot for her vast collection. She is an unrepentant bookaholic and has overflowing bookshelves in nearly every room of her house. Her favorite authors include J.R.R. Tolkien, J.K. Rowling, and C.S. Lewis–must have something to do with initials! She loves to travel and is hoping to need many research trips for future writing projects.
