“You were only out a few hours.” He ran his fingers through my hair. “I love this color on you, but you were just as fetching when you went blonde. I was being a jerk when I said otherwise.”
“Thanks.” If I were human, I’d blush. I wasn’t, so I blew him a kiss. How did I ever stay away?
“You came back to me.” For an older-than-dirt vampire, he had the boyish grin down pat.
“And you were a bastard about it.” I teased the light sprinkling of hair below his navel, and his cock bumped against my hip.
“I didn’t expect you to change your mind, especially after you got your own place and made the effort to register as an investigator.”
I sat up and looked down at him. “Sheena said you wouldn’t let anyone talk about me. How did you know?”
He squeezed his eyes shut. “I may have checked in on you once or twice.”
That was rich. “You checked in on me, when I wasn’t allowed to call you? You’re horrible.” I batted his shoulder, but I was grinning. If he hadn’t insisted on keeping his distance, I might settle for having him around, and we’d remain in limbo.
He clasped my hand and placed it on his chest. “Maybe once a week, tops. I had to know you were okay.”
“So you knew Alex and I broke up?” I asked.
He turned his gaze to my bare breasts. “I did. I didn’t know why, though.”
“And this morning you threw him into the conversation because...”
He raked his fingers through his hair and sighed. “I had to know if you were choosing me, or if I was all you had left.”
He knew me better than that. I should be upset, but it was comfy here, and I didn’t need to pee, and I could eat anything I felt like and never take the stairs anywhere again, and we were both naked, and I was happy.
Truly very happy.
“Round two?” Constantine asked, as I said, “I’m keeping my apartment and my job.”
“Sure,” I replied, as he said, “Whatever makes you happy.”
He made me happy. And he made me happier by kissing and licking his way down my body, teasing, pinching, and nibbling until I begged him to eat me out.
Which he did. With gusto. Then he bit my inner thigh and drunk from me again.
Later, I’ll ride him to oblivion and feed from his neck while he whispers my name like a prayer.
At some point I need to get out of bed and check my phone. It rang a couple times during the day. Might be Hunt. Sheena knows I won’t be back for a few days. She’ll tell Sally, but I have to call Mom and Dad and update them on my situation.
I should talk with Constantine too. If this is going to work, we must do it right this time. I’m keeping my place, though I don’t mind spending every night with him. And he can help me with my PI-ing. If we change our working hours and vet clients properly, we may even get council sanctioning.
At some point, I should tell Alex I’m a vampire again. We’re not together, and I owe him no explanation, but I want him to know he did nothing wrong. I just wasn’t cut out for mortality.
Constantine stirs beside me. The man is insatiable, and I match his appetite. I straddle him and rub my wet slit along his shaft.
Without opening his eyes, he says, “You’ll be the end of me.”
No, wait. He didn’t move his lips.
Euphoria spills through my veins, making my nerve endings tingle, and he’s not even touching me. “Can you hear me?” I ask in my head.
He looks at me, startled. “Shouldn’t I?”
I send, “I didn’t speak.”
I feel my joy fill his chest. I feel my weight on top of him. I feel my slickness against him. He bucks his hips and enters me, and I’m both of us at once.
“I love you.” The thought is in my head, but I don’t know if it’s mine or his.
I’m happy. I’m whole.
I’m home.
The End
(but you should keep reading)
Later that night
“I KNEW YOU’D FIND YOUR way back to him.”
I snapped my head toward the foot of the bed and saw Wesley’s simmering form smiling at us.
I squealed and pulled the sheets over my naked body. Constantine jumped up and looked around in alarm, but his gaze glided over the specter now hovering next to me.
“He can’t see me.” A hint of sadness tinged Wesley’s voice. “You’ve died more times. You’re closer to us.”
“To... ghosts?” I blinked, and he turned brighter, making the rest of the room fade behind him.
“Cherry? Who are you talking to?” Constantine grabbed my arm and shook me. In my head, I heard, “If someone’s haunting your dreams—”
“It’s okay.” I met his gaze long enough for him to see I was awake and aware of my surroundings. “It’s Wesley.”
Constantine started to ask more, but I shushed him and used our mental link to project to him what I saw. “How are you here?” I asked Wesley.
“My unfinished business was to see Master Constantine happy. Now I can rest. Thank you. Take care of him for me.” He cupped my cheek, and I felt his touch, but when he tried to straighten the candle on the nightstand, his fingers passed through it.
“I will,” I said. “Thank you for everything.”
“Goodbye, my friend.” Constantine sounded as choked up as I felt.
Wesley brightened into a ball of pure white light, and then dissolved into a million sparkles that disappeared before they hit the floor.
“So now I see ghosts, apparently,” I said.
He sat back wide eyed and gathered me to him. “Apparently.”
If only that was the last of the surprises coming our way.
We got a whole week to ourselves, before Alex called the mansion. It wasn’t about me.
Constantine had asked Ruby to look into soul sapphires, and she enlisted Alex’s help. Don’t ask me why.
According to her, there aren’t four soul gems, but ten, and they’re not all sapphires. Their original name was Petradia tis Anamonis, which translates to stones of waiting, and they put things or people into stasis.
I think they’re no more real than the Excalibur, but Constantine believes there’s more to them. He’s afraid Ádísa’s essence is still trapped in one of them, and we’re not done with her yet. We’ll go check her place tomorrow, and then look into Willoughby’s last known residence, but I don’t expect to find something.
Upside to this phone call was that Alex seemed fine with me and Constantine being together. We said we’ll all have drinks together.
There we go again, with the freaky civility.
I should write a book about these guys.
