Bruce Banner walked around the hangar for the fifth time. There was evidence of a full-scale purge, and when he crossed the runway blacktop for the sixth time, he noticed the wheel marks of a plane that was as large as a transport. Strange, he thought, all he had seen were the husks of bombed-out jets.

But he didn’t let it bother him. He had awakened with a disturbing sense of peace. The disquiet had left him, however, after he’d decided to take the good feelings as they came. Worrying about every little thing could drive a guy crazy.

Banner kept walking around the hangar. There was something about this enclosure, he told himself—as if somebody were drawing him inside. Finally, he succumbed to the whim and entered a convenient hole in the wall. Inside there was an exposed water pipe just running out of liquid, a dead engineer, his face twisted in shock, and the remains of what looked like a shirt. Several indistinct faces shot through his memory, but they weren’t clear enough for Banner to recognize them.

He didn’t dwell on them, because another feeling was pushing him across the floor. On the opposite side of the gigantic room there was a sliding door. He ran along toward it and then, with great energy, he pulled the opening aside.

Within sat four jet helicopters in a twin hangar fully the size of the one he had just crossed. They were painted a rich black with tiny lettering on their hulls saying JH 5, JH 6, JH 7, and JH 8.

Banner sat down in front of the first of them with a bemused expression on his face. He didn’t know how to fly a jet helicopter, but he figured he had plenty of time to learn.
