Lizzie closed her eyes and waited for the ear bud to be put into her ear, but, to her irritation, it was pushed into one of her nostrils instead. She opened her eyes and blinked a couple of times to try to work out what was going on, only to feel the second earbud being inserted into her other nostril.

“There you go,” a familiar voice said. “How’s that?”

“Adams?” Lizzie said with a sigh as she closed her eyes.

“What,” Adams replied as he removed the ear buds from her nose and opened a new packet. Lizzie managed the faintest of smiles before exhaustion overtook her.

  “You’re an idiot,” she whispered.

EASTER DAILY NEWS - SPECIAL REPORT

By John Butler, with additional reporting from Suzanne Casey

MI5, Britain’s homeland security services, today released further information about the foiled terrorist plot that was hatched in Norwich earlier this month. Speaking exclusively to the Eastern Daily News, the Home Office’s head of virology, Doctor Baker, gave us some more information on the true horror of the plan.

“They had engineered the virus so that it responded to different genetic backgrounds,” Dr Baker told us. “So as well as making it transmissible via aerosol, it would target people based on their genetic makeup. Caucasian and East Asian people would suffer minor symptoms, while people of black or other minority ethnic backgrounds would suffer the full range of the awful symptoms Marburg creates.”

Speaking at Number 10 Downing Street earlier today, the Prime Minister condemned the plot as an affront to our society and praised the work of the security services in bringing the terror network down. The network’s leader, Doctor Charlotte Lobjoie, is currently on remand in an unspecified maximum security facility and a number of arrests have been made around the country.

“There is no room for people like this in a modern United Kingdom,” the PM went on to say. “They will be tracked down, prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, and brought to justice.” The PM refused to comment on how long North Ronaldsay island, where the plane containing the deadly virus was diverted to, would remain in quarantine. The First Minister of Scotland will be giving a press conference later today.

In related news, the North Norfolk coastguard has confirmed that they have called off the search for missing local man Luke Waterfield following the discovery of human remains in the sea off Happisburgh. Originally thought to be a key player in the Marburg terror plot, the disgraced former Chief of Defence Staff was released from custody two weeks ago because of a lack of evidence. His release prompted several violent disturbances on the streets of London, Luton, and Bradford, and he was due in court this week on non-related charges of fraud and money laundering. It is believed that his yacht was destroyed by a gas explosion just off the North Norfolk coast. Local fisherman, Nobby Roberts, saw the blast.

“That weren’t like no gas explosion I ever saw,” Mr Roberts, 76, told the Eastern Daily News. “It went up like it had a bomb on board. I did National Service, and it sounded to me like explosives.” Police declined to comment further on Mr Roberts’s claims or any potential link with the still missing airman from RAF Honington, Corporal Robert Hunter.

“Anyone with any information on Hunter’s whereabouts,” a police spokesperson said, “is advised to call 999 immediately and not approach him.”

And finally, for the first time in its history, the National Journalism Award has been presented posthumously. Eastern Daily News reporter Eleanor Vickers, who first uncovered the terror plot and whose evidence led the security services to the ringleaders, was awarded the prize after she contracted the Marburg virus during her investigation.

Eleanor, 23, sadly died from the virus along with a nurse, Miss Hannah Culot, 26, from the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. Their families have requested privacy at this difficult time.
