When she stepped closer, she scowled at me. At me.
Choosing to be a bigger person, I said, “Hello, Cam—I mean, Kate.”
“Agatha,” she sneered. “Perfect, princess Agatha. Everybody loves Agatha. Until they thought you were a thief. Ha! That was awesome.”
Perfect, princess Agatha? What the hell? She’s mental. “What did I do to you? I certainly didn’t deserve to be framed.” I might as well ask her that. It’s been the one thing I just couldn’t wrap my head around.
“Jesus, you’re so full of yourself. Poor Agatha with her dead mom and stupid crush on Trent,” she says mockingly.
Okaaaaay.
I haven’t spoken to Trent at all since I was fired. Not even after I was cleared. He’s reached out to me via text message, but I haven’t responded. What is there to say?
“I’ve got a little secret about your precious Trent,” she whisper-hisses.
I wait. No reason to say anything.
“I was fucking Trent the entire time I worked there.”
“Oh.” That does surprise me.
She leans in closer, but I stand my ground.
“One time, we did it in your office. On your desk.”
Okaaaaay. “Gross.” I mutter.
“It was a little gross,” she snickers. “The guy sucks in bed. I probably saved you. I shouldn’t have.”
I stare at my former work colleague. I no longer see a friend or any reason to listen to any more from her. “Well, good luck to you, Kate.”
“Fuck you,” she mutters.
Well, maybe I’ve got one more thing to say, “No. Fuck you. I thought of you as my dearest friend. I would have done anything for you. You chose to steal and to frame me.” I turn to leave. “Goodbye, Kate. Enjoy prison.”
“Fuck you.”
I guess there’s nothing more to say. I left the items I planned to buy that day on a random shelf and walked out the door. With my head held high, I speed-walked to my car, hopped in, and drove off into the sunset. No. Seriously. It was the actual sunset.
The truth is, I’m lucky. I get to drive home to a man who loves me and who wouldn’t be in my life if it weren’t for Camille and her diabolical parents, so for that, I should thank her, but I don’t think I will, especially now. Nope. I don’t think she’d understand the significance.
The minute I get home, I yell for him, “Ian?”
“Bedroom,” he shouts back.
I step into my room, to a view that’s beyond anything I’ve ever seen. It’s Ian Burke lying on top of my quilt in only a pair of athletic shorts. Nothing else. He’s wearing his dark-rimmed glasses, his hair is a bit messy in a very sexy way, and he’s got a book on his chest. And not just any book. He’s reading Pride and Prejudice. You know the one? Be still my heart.
“Whatcha doing, honey?” I say a little shyly. I’m not sure why. Maybe because he took my breath away at the sight of him just then.
“Reading. Waiting.”
“Waiting? For what?”
“You.”
“For me? For how long?”
“My entire life.”
Well, now, what else does a girl need to hear? Absolutely nothing. “Me too.”
