  We're brothers.

Bound together, not by blood but by grit.

Our club - constantly under siege by mafia, yakuza, or from our broken pasts.

Our loyalty - strong, but only to those who remain true.

Even through the chaos, we find hope.

  Hope for a better tomorrow.

One where we're not constantly at war. Fighting until the bitter end - for freedom or blood. Whichever comes first.

Through the carnage, a glimmer shines.

A spark of new life, of love.

These stories aren't merely about brothers, love and family—they're about chaos, betrayal, conflict and turmoil.

  Life - it's worth living.

  Because we are Defiance.

  Dedication

  To Kellie.

This series of covers would not have been so utterly amazing without you. The hard work and all the effort you put into this series has been worth it. The amount of comments I get every time there is a cover reveal continues to astound me.

Thank you for getting this so incredibly right.

  Acknowledgments

First and foremost, I would like to thank my mother, Kaylene Osborn, for her work as my editor. You have worked with me to make The Chicago Defiance the best it can be. Hours of work has gone into the manuscripts, and I know you put as much effort into my work as you possibly can. Thank you for believing in me and giving me the courage to trust in myself.

To Diana – I’m so glad to have you on my BETA team. Your feedback is always on point and every comment you make I pay special attention to. Your thoughts and ideas always help to make my stories grow, and I wouldn’t be on this journey without you. Thank you so much for everything you do. This series would be lost without you. And so would my team.

To Kim B – Thank you for all your thoughts and effort in your BETA process for the first half of this series. You made some great comments about the stories which only improved the end product. I’m so happy to have you on my team, and I’m grateful you have been with me for so many of my novels. I hope we can continue for many more to come.

To Carol – I feel like anything I say in these acknowledgments is getting old hat, lol. I thank you for being a part of my team, for the work you’ve done, for always being there. I don’t think a small paragraph in the acknowledgments section can truly grasp the amount of love and respect I hold for you. My book journey wouldn’t have been the same if you weren’t in it. You help me, you support me, and you’re always there for a friendly ear. I’m so lucky to have you. I just hope you know how truly appreciated you are. You’re the best.

To Cindy/Thia – I love that you always manage to find the little Aussie-isms that I manage to slip into the manuscripts. I’m so grateful to have you on my team, your help is priceless. I’m privileged you’re willing to help me and honored to call you a friend. Truly blessed is how I feel that we have found each other in this huge world.

To Amanda and Debb – my newbie betas, thank you for taking a chance. Your input and ideas have been outstanding in this first half of the series. Your help and guidance has been hugely appreciated, and I’m so grateful to have added you both to my wonderful team.

To all of my awesome BETA readers – Thank you for once again putting your thoughts into this first half. I appreciate all of your energy and ideas, and together we make a great team. Without you beautiful ladies, this series wouldn’t be at its best potential. So thank you, every single one of you.

To Christine – My publicist. Thank you for everything you have done for me. For showing me the path I needed to be on. For organizing me, for showing me the way on how to do things. Without you, I don’t think I would be where I am today. Thank you for everything.

To Mikki – Where have you been all my life? I wasn’t sure I could have the type of fun connection with a PA again, but you’re not just a PA who works me, kicks my ass and tells me when everything needs to be done (which I need and truly appreciate) you’re a friend, and a good one at that. Thank you for taking me on and believing in me. I can’t wait for April! Bring on the fireball (quietly packs her dacks lol).

To Nicki – Thank you for proofing my new series. You do such a wonderful job on every book, and I’m ecstatic to have you working on my bikers. You’re a gorgeous person, and I’m so glad to have you on my team.

To Jane – If I think of my life without you in it, it looks kinda bleak. You may be an ocean away, but you’re the best friend I have. I can count on you for an ear, for advice, for a freaking laugh and a half. You’re my Sponge Bob and I couldn’t do this book thing without you boo. Thank you for putting up with me. Thank you for embracing my weird. Thank you for letting me into your family, your world and your home. In the words of Freddy, ‘Oh, you’re my best friend.’ ;)

To Kellie – My amazingly talented cover artist. When I approached you with the ideas for this biker series you went away and came back with a load of images. We picked a few and then ran with it. Look at what you came up with. The covers for this series are stunning, and as we keep going, they just get better and better. I’m so glad I have you on my team. You just… get me!

To my beautiful, playful and utterly adorable pup, Bella. I’m running out of things to say in these acknowledgments to you Bella boo. I’ve done so many to you now I tend to ramble on lol. But seriously, you’re the best dog ever and you’ve been with me since I started this writing journey. You’re getting older, but you’re still as playful as ever. I love your squishy face you gorgeous mutt!

Last of all, I want to thank YOU, the reader. Your continued support of my writing career is both humbling and heartwarming. I adore my readers so much, and honestly, couldn’t keep going without the love and support you all show me each day. Thank you for believing in me, and I hope I can keep you entertained for many, many years to come.

  Thank you,

  Much love,

  K E Osborn

  xoxo

  Information and Dictionary

Below is a list of terms used in this book, including Italian/Irish/Japanese explanations for your convenience.

Ayla’s father (Smokin’ Joe) is Australian, and therefore this book contains some euphemisms and slang words that form
part of the Australian spoken word.

Please remember that the words are not misspelled, and form part of the everyday Australian lifestyle.

If you would like further explanation, or to discuss the translation or meaning of a particular word, please do not hesitate to contact the author—contact details have been provided for your convenience at the end of this book.

As Smokin’ Joe is Australian, he pronounces the word Mom as Mum, and hence, it has been spelled that way throughout the manuscript when in Smokin’ Joe’s dialogue.

  CHAPTER ONE

  TORQUE

The sharp and loud crack of guns going off pierces through the room. The popping and cracking continues to echo through the area as I round the corner, ducking out of the way of the men coming in my direction down the hall. It’s chaos in here for a Friday night, and it’s great to see the place busy for once. The indoor range is packed with marksmen and novices, and the atmosphere is alive and buzzing as I walk along the lengthy hall through to the main section. The popping and cracking of the bullets fade away into the distance as I stroll. People coming and going, analyzing their abilities, testing their aim, whether for sport, pleasure, or to make themselves feel safe in this day and age. We opened this range with a view that everyone could participate. We don’t discriminate.
