“Now we have changed our lives and it’s the best decision we ever made.” Storm leaned down and kissed her.
“Thank you for giving up everything and choosing to live here with me.” They’d both informed Rock and Jag that they were going to live here on Earth with her on her ranch. He and Derechos hadn’t suffered from the energy sickness that bothered some of the other Midnighters and they thought it was because the three of them were together. Now, their primary focus was watching for women that felt drawn to the area and could be Atans.
“I love you both so much. I can’t imagine my life without you.”
“You’ll never have to because we will always be here.” Derechos held her hand against his chest right over his heart. “You’re our Atan, our life, love.”
“A simple word is not enough to describe how we feel about you, Dawn.” Storm ran his fingers over the markings on her shoulder. “Our love for you was written on our skin the moment we were born.”
Epilogue
As Merry took the last sip of her drink, she watched all but two of the bouncers quickly exiting the bar. A mass exodus like that must mean a brawl out front. Her curiosity nagged at her senses and she warred with what to do. The man on stage was gorgeous, but then all the men at Midnighters were above average in size and looks. She knew deep down that something was going on here. Years of working as an investigative reporter had given her an edge and instincts that she’d learned not to ignore.
This adventure had started when she’d come across a small article online about the woman who vanished on a nearby highway. They had presumed her dead but she reappeared in a local clinic a week later looking clean and healthy, only to vanish again. There was a story about another woman whose house had been attacked by chupacabra and she’d been dragged out into the desert never to be seen from again. It was said a local woman suffered the same fate but managed to escape. She lived in fear in her own house with two large bodyguards. Something about these stories spoke to Merry. She couldn’t explain it but after reading them she felt drawn to this area, as if she’d been meant to discover the truth behind the legends. These three stories were linked somehow. Merry knew it. She could feel it in her bones.
A bit more research and she found out about this exotic dance club out in the middle of nowhere that catered to women. Midnighters had been built shortly after the first disappearance and she wondered if there could be a correlation. What if the people who ran this were using it as a draw for women and then kidnapping them. This could be the start of a kind of sex slave ring. She’d get a Pulitzer for uncovering the truth and bringing these douchenuggets to justice.
Since everyone not fascinated by the man moving on the stage seemed to be distracted by the ruckus outside, she took the opportunity to indulge in a little snooping around. Standing up, she made her way toward the women’s bathroom, teetering a bit on her heels before regaining her balance. Damn those drinks carried a bit of a punch to them. She hadn’t realized how much until she’d tried to walk. Oh, well. Drunken, lost chick is always a good excuse if I get caught.
A quick look around confirmed that no one was paying the least attention to her when she slipped through the “employees only” door and made her way down the dark hallway. She opened each of the four doors and found nothing but simple living quarters and a small kitchen. There must be more, something…She knew the longer she wandered around the more likely she’d get caught, but a feeling like something extraordinary was just around the next corner made her nerves tingle. The last door opened to a dark stairwell leading down but there looked to be a silvery light reflecting off the walls.
“Do they have a pool down there?” she muttered to herself as she watched the silvery patterns wave along the stairwell. There’s only one way to find out.
Merry took a deep breath and braced her hand against the wall. The stairs were larger than normal, thank goodness, because her balance wasn’t at its best at the moment. She stopped in amazed wonder at the bottom of the stairs. It looked like an enormous pool of mercury, only it was vertical, not horizontal. As she walked toward it she could just make out a warped reflection of herself in it.
“What the hell?” She reached out her hand and brushed the surface before her inebriated senses could warn her not to. She gasped in horror as the substance surrounded her arm and sucked her in as if she’d fallen headfirst into quicksand.
