  I sat up, dropping the paper and iPod in my hand to the floor. “What—?” I shook my head slightly, unbelieving, yet joy filled me. “I thought— Is Aidan here, too?”

  “He will be soon. Kiss me.”

  Her knees came to rest beside my thighs on the bed as she climbed onto my lap and our arms wound around each other. I laughed softly as her hands pushed my hair back and our lips touched gently. The kiss started with slow gentle caresses and light licking and sucking, but it grew passionate and wild, our tongues tangling roughly and each of us pouring all of our love into it. When I finally pulled my mouth from hers, we were both panting and I was rock hard, but I was still concerned for my son.

  “No, seriously. Where’s the baby? Everyone will be so disappointed.”

  Julia sat back on her haunches, still resting on my knees. My hands slid down to cup her bottom and I squeezed gently. Her lips curled into a bright smile. “No one’s disappointed. Are you disappointed?”

  I kissed her mouth again, hard and then more softly. “You know the answer to that— I didn’t really want you to go.” I whispered reaching for another kiss.

  The house was quiet and I could hear our back door open and voices coming from below as Julia pulled away and stood up, grabbing my hand and pulling me up behind her. “We have to go downstairs. Aidan is sleeping and I need to put him down, but I’m pretty sure there are others who want to see you.”

  “What did you do?”

  “Jenna and I decided you and Aaron weren’t shipping us out. We made our own plans and everyone is here.”

  “You and Jenna—are amazing.”

  “Merry Christmas,” Julia said, smiling softly. She was so sweet to me. “I love you. We all do. Everyone is here.”

  As much as I wanted to rush downstairs, I had to wait a minute. “Baby, I’ve got a raging boner. I can’t go downstairs right away.”

  Julia burst out laughing. “Okay. I’ll get Aidan to bed and you change, first, but hurry, I have dinner ready.”

  “If your father is here, does that mean Black Forrest?”

  She stopped and turned, shaking her head. “I can’t fool you, Matthews.”

  “Oh, you fooled me, alright.”

  I stood and walked to her, my hand coming up to cup her face. I brushed her jaw with my thumb and starred into her dark green eyes.

  “Thank you for always knowing what I need. What’s on the iPod?”

  She stood on tiptoe to kiss my lips. “I found a song that made me think us us… back at Stanford, when we first met. At the time, I didn’t dare to hope for this.”

  My heart swelled until it felt as if it would crack open my chest. I brushed the back of my knuckles against her petal soft cheek. It hurt to have ever caused her pain, albeit unintentionally. If only she’d know I was in love with right away. I wished we could just crawl into the middle of our bed and share the iPod like we started doing so long ago.

  “I thought about getting one of those dual headphone jacks…” Her eyes shot up to mine, so luminous.

  “Don’t you dare,” I whispered, shaking my head and lightly caressing her mouth with mine.

  Her breath quickened and she laughed softly, kissing me back. It was all I could do to remember the others in the lower level of our house.

  “I want to see them, but damn if I don’t wish we could just close the door.”

  “There is time for that, later. My mom will get up with Aidan tonight. But we thought we’d try the cereal. My parents convinced me to trust my doctor-husband.”

  Her lips lifted in a soft smile.

  “Sounds good.”

  I kissed her hand before she left the room and I stood there for a minute, still stunned at the turn of events. I didn’t know why I was surprised. Whenever I tried to take care of her, she took care of me. It was just like Julia to do exactly what I needed. Each and every time.
