Hospitalers – The highly trained order of doctors and nurses among the Quailor.
Hoth-Weard Ev’Rhettson – A bastard-born Herewardi who took upon himself the honored name of Ev-Rhettson in a vain attempt to gain legitimacy. He is the publicist of a newspaper that promotes slanderous gossip among the Herewardi whom he has grown to hate and acts as a tool in Clotilde’s hands to besmirch Sur Sceaf’s good name among the other tribes.

Hroar – A lore master and son of Sur Spear. He is traveling with Long Swan and Alcuin delivering information to Sur Sceaf from Sur Spear and the Roufytrof.
Hrusilde – A sister of Sur Spear’s wife Clotilde. She is snide toward Paloma and Sur Sceaf’s other wives during the trial of Gal Fawkes v. Lord Sur Sceaf as she gossips and spreads ill will against Sur Sceaf among her gaggle of Herewardi ladies.
Hutterites - A people of the past that, among others, makes up the Quailor people.
Ichabod - One of the young Quailor men chosen to unearth the Holy Jars from beneath the Ineffable Tree. He is honored for his good deeds and knowledge of the Holy Book as opposed to his other name sake.
Ichabod Schwartzherz – A Quailor dycon loyal to Fromer. He goes along with Fromer’s devious plots.
Idoan People – Rogue Whites living to the east of Herewardi lands.
Ilkchild – Son of Ilker. Brother of Faechild and adopted son of Sur Sceaf who is reknowned for his perfection of beauty and comeliness.
Ilker –the Father of Kanarus, Ilrundel, Ilkchild, and Faechild. He was the scion of Baldurean royalty whose grave was never found.
Ilkrundel – Son of Sur Sceaf and Faechild. A newborn baby in Book II
Ilrundel – Heretoga of the Fort Rock fyrds, the son of Ilker. Escorts Sur Sceaf and his comrades into Fort Rock from Buzzard Run.
Ingrid – A cute Quailor girl. Flirts with the young bloods, Ilkchild, and Redelfis.
Isabelle von der Vogelweide – The youngest child of Rudolf and Verushka. Sur Sceaf develops a strong fatherly bond and love for this little girl.
Jack Ev’Rhettson – A Herewardi Feller, clearing trail for the trek to Witan Jewell.
Jackie Doo – The name of endearment for Hrothgar, known as Crooked Jack.
Jakob Inteus Walker – A Balmorean, married to the evil Yggep of the Poisoned Lands. He is a conniving traitor who made a pact with the Pitter Zonga of Eugene to betray and decoy the Herewardi away from the Gates of the Umpqua.
Jesus Christ – As described in the bible, a Jywdic god worshipped by the Quailor and many rogue nations people, also worshipped by Va-Eyra and her order of the Rose Rood.
Jezebelle – A Quailor’s mule
Jig Peck – A Rogue fisherman from the coast. The lover of Gal Fawkes. He was waylaid by a storm at sea and was thought to be dead.
Johann von Hohenzollern – Joseph von der Vogelweide’s fellowcraft metalsmith.
Joseph – Father of Jesus, as described in the bible.
Joseph von der Vogelweide – Rudolf’s brother. A Quailor master goldsmith, redsmith and blacksmith.
Jywds – An ancient race many of who escaped the labor camps of Nu Yalk and fled to the West for sanctuary.
Jywds of Esdraelon – The Jywds who live along the Jordan River of Salmalheur.
Katherin – One of Ludmilla’s two oldest daughters
Khem – The Black friend of Sur Sceaf and his sons, the husband of Annie and one of the few remaining Blacks freed from Pitter enslavement camps.
Knighton – A Quailor Dycon who voted with Fromer to remain autonomous and separated from the three tribes and a strong proponent of the Retrenchment Movement.
Kraki – One of Donya’s shepherd dogs.
Lady Haw Swan – A younger wife of Sur Spear who administers comfort to Paloma during the infamous trial of Gal Fawkes v. Lord Sur Sceaf.
Lana – The Quailor and second wife of Sur Sceaf, whom he betrothed at the young age of seventeen. Mother of Brekka.
Leofric – One of the Herewardi Seven Longfathers and Father of Sur who started the migration from the Taxus.
Lila Stobie – A little old Quailor widow. Though she is loved by all, and wise, she is also stubborn and desires to stay in Salem only to be convinced by Sur Sceaf that she is needed on the trail as a midwife. Her bones can’t handle the jarring of the wagon, so Herman offers to carry her for the rest of the journey.
Lilith Durer – Lana’s mother and Sur Sceaf’s mother-in-law who is a devout Quailor woman.
Little Doe – Wife of Sur Sceaf’s blood brother, Mendaka.
Long Pyr – A nickname for Pyrsyrus due to his height, as he stood a head above all other men.
Long Swan – Sur Sceaf’s most beloved brother, the son of Sur Spear and Ethelwynn who was raised as a wizard from a very young age. He is the youngest lore master in Herewardi history. AKA Feather.
Longfather Howrus – A forefather of the Herewardi. He is the son of Hrus-Syr-Os who avenged his father’s death and led the surviving Herewardi to their refuge in the wilderness of the Appalachians. He is the author of the Forty-Four Laws.

Lord Saxwylf – Pyrsyrus’ father-in-law and the father of Faewylf who became Pyr’s wife.
Lorie Eisner - A young girl stolen by the Pitters at the Massacre of Salem who was being taken to be sold to the Growling.
Lowry People – an extinct people who chose to have no contact and were obliterated by the Pitter Rat Packs.
Ludmilla – Lana’s younger sister and Sur Sceaf’s sister-in-law from the Quailor Tribe.
Ludwig von Hollar – The ecumenical past high priest of the Quailor whoe was slain in the battle of Salem. T He was the first Quailor to take up arms and encourage warfare as a means of survival for his peace loving people. He was known as the Flying Wolf among the Sharaka. AKA Lu Hollar
Luther Hahnsauer – A Quailor dycon who stands up to Fromer, and denounces the act of organizing private and secretive meetings to sabotage other leaders.
Mahallah – The ruling queen of the Herewardi, alongside her husband Sur Spear. Daughter of Ludwig von Hollar and Redith. Mother of Sur Sceaf. She is hHlf Quailor and Half Sharaka.
Manitou – A holy being or god of the Red Men.
Margot Green – A Black woman. She is a leader of a Hickoryan band that joins with the allied three tribes and she is known for getting her way. AKA Big Boss.
Marion von Hollar – A Quailor youth. The son of Elijah von Hollar
Martin Gutweis – A Quailor man who was killed during the Massacre at Salem.
Mary – Mother of Jesus, as described in the bible and venerated by the followers of the Rose Rood..
Melyngoch – Brother of Sur Sceaf and son of Sur Spear and Clotilde who believes himself to be the best choice for the commission to unify and lead the three tribes. He has been groomed and manipulated by his mother to take part in slandering and attempts to supersede his brother Sur Sceaf after Sur Sceafs election.
Mendaho – Taneshewa’s closest friend and also a dear friend of Sur Sceaf. She is the scholarly keeper of the Mountain Scrolls which contain the history the Sharaka people. AKA Meny
Mendaka – Sur Sceaf’s blood-brother and best friend from youth. He is the Sharaka talking chief of the Snake Clan and the loyal advocate of Sur Sceaf amongst the tribes of Red Men. He was named Mendaka by his father. It is an honored name, meaning “the Belt of Os” in the folk mouth of the Herewardi, or “the belt of Orion” among the Sharaka medicine men. Both peoples hold the belief that the constellation of the Hunter is the place of their origin.
Mennonites - A people of the past that, among others, makes up the Quailor people.
Meny – Nick name for Mendaho.
Milkchild – She is the Jywdic wife of Sur Sceaf and daughter to the honorable Rabbi Amschel ben Levi. She is Sur Sceaf’s fourth wife. AKA Milka
Miriam von Hollar – A Quailor woman and
wife to Elijah von Hollar.
Moloch – A pagan god mentioned in “The Holy Book” of the Quailor. Children were burned as sacrificial offerings to this god. Sur Sceaf criticizes Rudolf’s retrenchment philosophy the same as sacrificing his family to Moloch by remaining in Salem.
Moon Fire – Sur Sceaf and Shining Moon’s daughter. A newborn baby in Book II.

Muckenschnabel – The last name of the Quailor dycon Fromer.
Muryh – Also known as The Master Builder. He is the Great architect of the stone city of the Sand Wand Islands as well as the fortress at Fort Rock.
Myra-El - A female warrior from Herewardi history whom the skalds say slew Pitters in droves and that upon the mere sight of her, whole legions would flee the field for fear of her reputation.
Ndee – What the Apache call themselves.

Norn Sisters – They are the three sisters of fate, who existed before the world was created and are greater than all the gods. They are eternal and enduring.
Nunnehi – The spiritual protectors of the Red Men.
Ochoco Tribe- an independent tribe of Red Men from the High Desert.
Odhin – The Sky-Father who according to lore, legend, and the Folk-Mouth is the earliest father of the Herewardi people and the chief of the Herewardi gods. AKA Nick, Lord of the Wild Hunt, Yggd Yung,

Old Mosquito Beak – see Fromer
Onadaga – Taneshewa’s uncle who is mentioned only in passing. He purportedly tried to build a sweat lodge out of stone and it collapsed.
Onamingo – He is Sharaka chief of chiefs and is of Cherokee descent. He is also the father of Taneshewa and married to Dancing Rabbit. All tribes know him as the Red King, so great was his wisdom and strength.
Ordnung – the Quailor word for those belonging to an order such as the Ephrata or the Hospitalers.
Orion – The star constellation Orion the Hunter.
Os – The Herewardi name for the creator god who rules as the god of all gods.
Osgard –the place where the valiant may go after this life to be in the bosom of Osiris, Odhin, or Ullr.
Otto Linsner - A Quailor survivor of the Salem Massacre who was rescued at Woonstone by Sur Sceaf’s fyrds

Pally – see Paloma
Paloma – Sur Sceaf’s first wife. The daughter of the famed wizard Malcolm Gondolwulf of the Omala and the faery-queen of Sur Sceaf’s bride-covey. She is the head of the Council of Women mother to Arundel III
Pam-El-Ea – The wife of Ilker, and the mother of ilkchild who upon hearing of Ilker’s death in battle took an early grave by dying of grief.
Peter Distel – A young Quailor who caught a panther cub and let it suckle with his goats.
Pitters – a Transhuman species, devoted to the worship of Angrar, their god and creator. They are part rat and part human and were bred to be humanity’s foremost enemy.
Prester – a religious group of people who dwell in the valleys of the Rocky Mountains in the Land of Salmalhuer.
Pyringean Pirates – Also known as Pyr-Ring-Ean Pirates, Fire-Ring Pirates. These are Pyrsyrus’ elite naval force. The pirates attack Pitter cities along the seaboard and any Pitter vessels that make it out to sea. They are considered one of the most powerful naval forces in the known world.
Pyrsyrus – The son of Syrus (aka Sur Spear). He is King of the Sand Wand Islands. He is also the first Herewardi king of this era to reach the third stage of civilization – which is to build cities of stone. AKA Pyr, Long Pyr
Quailor – A pacifist religious culture that believes in the Christ. They govern themselves by a collection of books they call The Complete Holy Scriptures.
Quakers – A people of the past that, among others, makes up the Quailor people.
Quants – People who have only a portion of Red Man’s blood. They are called Quants by those who are full-blooded Red Men and are generally viewed as lesser men than full-blooded Red Men.
Rabbi Amschel ben Levi – A Jywdic rabbi, often just referred to as The Rabbi. He is an ambassador of the Herewardi to the Quailor and oft times other peoples. He has adopted the practice of polygamy as practiced by his forefathers and acts as the impartial judge during the trial of Gal Fawkes v. Lord Sur Sceaf, due to his not being a part of any of the tribes involved in the conflict.
Ram of the Gods – a title of respect for the Kings of Herewardi tribes.
Raven’s Tongue – A highly skilled Tlingit seaman who is a whaler and a fisherman and a close friend of Pysyrus. AKA Hrafn
Redelfis – Son of Mendaka and Little Doe. Although he is a Sharaka youth he has the unusual trait of being red haired.
Redith – Grandmother (Mo Mo) of Sur Sceaf. She is a gifted seeress and one of the 22 female leaders in the Roufytrof. She is also Sagwi and Thunder Horse’s sister, all of Sharaka descent. Aka Do-Tsu-Wa, Red Bird

Regulus – The star we know as Regulus
Reinhardt Schmidt – A man saved by Doctor Walter Shank’s medicinal wisdom.
Retrenchment Society – An extremely conservative branch of the Quailor presided over by Fromer Muckenshnabel and his dycons which constitutes a new and zealously xenophobic faith which jeopardizes the safety of all Quailor society.
Rip Porter AKA Rip the Prester – Once an apostle of the Prester people in the Rocky Mountains, Rip has been sent to form bonds of friendship with the Herewardi and investigate the alliance of the three tribes. He is an apostate of the Prester faith, yet does the bidding of the leadership of the Presters who remain invested in his wise council. He becomes a quick friend to the allied peoples.
River Folk- another name of the Colomba Rogues
Rogue Nations – A loose conglomeration of white tribes. Most of which give no allegiance to any confederation.
Rogue Tribe of Coquille – A tribe of whites living on the coastal lands and river in Coquille, near the Maiden’s Head.

Roufytrouf – The ruling council of the Herewardi composed of 44 members, 22 males and 22 females.
Rudolf von der Vogelweide – Husband of Verushka and Lana’s brother-in-law who is a staunch Retrencher who follows Fromer’s commands without question. He cultishly decides to be one of several families that remain in Salem after the exodus.
Russell – One of “The Twins.” A boy of around 7 or 8 years. The son of the Lore Master Swan Hilde and Sur Sceaf.
Rus-Syr-Os – Husband of Va-Eyra who was slain in the battle of Salem.
Sacra-Ahmen River – a large river in the Kalifornias.
Sagawis – See Sagwi
Sagwi – Sur Sceaf’s great aunt and shamanic advisor. She advises many of the younger generation and is the Sharaka midwife and medicine woman. AKA Sagawis
Samuel Gmund - A Quailor survivor of the Salem Massacre who was rescued at Woonstone by Sur Sceaf’s fyrds
Sanangrar – A member of the Black Brotherhood and a Pitter commissar of unmeasured cruetly.
Sarah Beth – A Quailor woman and wife to Habraham.
Saxia – A daughter of Sur Sceaf
Saxia of Zamora – Starkwulf’s first wife. Starkwulf is the Wose and we find his reminisces of better times with her, when they danced and celebrated together in the days of his youth.
Saxwulf – Was Long Swan’s best friend known as the Bride-Stealer because he eloped with Faehunig on the night before she was to wed to Long Swan.
Sceafbeard - A Herewardi young blood and part of the young blood twelver that goes with Mendaka to rescue Sur Sceaf and kill the Pitters that captured him.
Sea Stallions – refers to the dragoon style boats of Pyrsyrus’ navy.
Sharaka – A tribe of mixed origins, they are mainly composed of Cherokee and Herewardi.

g Chiefs – The chiefs who have been chosen as spokesmen for the clans and tribes of the Sharaka
Shining Moon – Sur Sceaf’s sixth wife, a Sharaka, and dear friend of Mendaho.
Shriners – the makers of furniture.
Shug Moss – The leader of the Colomba Rogues who became a valuable ally of the three tribes. It is he who saves what Quailor he can at the Massacre at Salem.
Silver Harriers – The second stage in a young blood’s training. They act as scouts, circuit riders and couriers for the military. They are usually between the ages 15 and 16.
Squirrel – A Sharaka woman who replaces Taneshewa as a midwife, so Taneshewa can meet with Surrey and enjoy the Booger Dance.
Sliding Moon – A Sharaka woman, Xelph’s mother, and wife of Wind Chaser.
Smiling Snake – A Sharaka baby whom Taneshewa helps deliver.
Snake Asker – A Sharaka wise man who predicts early winter rains and recommends the three tribes get moving as soon as possible to migrate into Witan Jewell.
Snake Clan – One of the clans composed of both Klamath and Sharaka peoples.
Snake Horse – He is Onamingo’s right hand man who is a Cherokee and tusband of Morning Bird who fought for Sur Sceaf in the battle of Frink Glen.
Sparrow Hawk – The older sister of Taneshewa, and the daughter of Onamingo and Dancing Rabbit.
Spirit Chiefs – They are powerful medicine men who have distinguished themselves through talents and services. They come from many Red Men tribes.
Standing Bull – A member of the Klamath tribe who joined the Sharaka at DiAhman. He was rejected for the most part from the Klamath tribe for his rebelliousness within the tribe and his rakish fornication for which he had been known. He is the foremost of the ruffians that accosted Sur Sceaf on the trail to DiAhman and it is he who stood as opposition against Surrey in the plan of uniting the three tribes.
Star Shine – Sur Sceaf and Shining Moon’s daughter. Four years old in Book II
Starkwulf – The original name of the Wose, the former king in Zamora.
Sunchild – A Jywdic young blood, his father being Herewardi, his mother Jywdic. He is part of the young blood twelver that goes with Mendaka to find Sur Sceaf and assists in killing the Pitters that captured him.
