“Wait, you’re together again?!” I said.

Mom just blushed. “Chelsea, I’ve been waiting several decades to be back with the love of my life. Do you think I would waste another day?!” She ran across the room and skipped around the chair, threw her arms around Benny and kissed him on the cheek. “Chelsea, Rudy, I know you’ve heard this a lot, but I think he might be the one!”

  “Too soon,” Rudy joked.

“Yeah,” I agreed. “That’s going to take some time.” It was crazy, but for the first time in my life I actually found myself believing mom and her declaration of love. Rudy sat down at the foot of the bed and put a hand on my leg.

“This is weird for you too, right? Last week I just had a deadbeat mom. Now I’ve got a sister and a dad.”

“It’s very weird, but I guess it also feels kind of nice too.” I looked at Rudy, Benny, and my mom. “We’ve got a lot of time to catch up on.”

“And so many outings to plan!” Mom sang enthusiastically. “Oh, it feels so good to have everyone together finally! How about we go bowling? Or go out for pizza?!”

“My shoulder says no to bowling, but my stomach says yes to pizza,” I said.

“I do have plans actually—” Rudy began.

“Cancel them Rudolph dear, we’re one big happy family now, it’s time to celebrate!” mom cheered.

Maybe I was still delirious from my near-death experience, but I realized a huge grin was on my face. I had a home now, and a family to call my own. Perhaps we weren’t the most normal family, but we were a family at least.

I wouldn’t have it any other way.
