She looked at her mother, who was nodding her head. Esmeralda had a smile pasted on her face that was a polite one, but Maggie could see the nerves behind it.
“So what exactly was your question?” Esmeralda asked.
“Are you guys witches?” Dan asked. “Because for three days, I was an ogre and I got the idea that you guys were witches and you were sort of in charge of things..”
Time froze as Dan’s question hit them. It was like the rest of the diner was still going, but the witches and Dan were stuck in a time warp. As a mortal, Dan should never remember what had happened.
“Yes, we are witches,” Esmeralda said. “And if you are willing, we need your help because there is a problem in Grimwood Valley. Would you like to be the first to join our team?”
Dan’s eyes widened and his chest heaved as he listened. After a moment, he nodded his head. It looked like the new Grimwood Valley Protection Team had the first non-witch member.
