“Hm. Well, I hope it lasts,” Jason commented. “But you still haven’t said how you feel about meeting them.”

“I really am fond of Mr. Baylis,” Kit said slowly. “I think, for his sake ... In any case, nothing she did matters to us now, does it?”

“No?” Jason asked softly. “Why not?”

She gave him a look that was half-reproachful, half-triumphant. “Because we don’t have to be afraid of her any more. She can never do us any harm again.”

“Quite sure?” Jason was smiling now.

“Quite,” Kit said serenely. “Now that we’ve truly found one another, neither she nor anyone else can come between us.”

Jason caught his breath as he put his arm around her and drew her close.

“That’s what I wanted to hear you say,” he whispered unsteadily. “To know that you feel as sure of it as I do.”

He kissed her with his heart on his lips, and to Kit it was the seal on their happiness. Not always could they expect to live in such a radiant world as was theirs at this moment, but whatever came, they would face unafraid because they would be together. What more could they ask than that?
