The mention of Boxutrin was enough to knock me back in my seat. My eyes went wide as I scanned through, clicking on the links they’d included. There were lots of exclamation points, lots of all-caps ranting.

I skimmed the articles they’d linked to. Evidently, The Alliance had done something worthwhile, after all. Somebody must’ve stumbled upon that first video, the one that had hooked me and convinced me to reach out to Richard in the first place. They’d done their homework and discovered that nothing Richard talked about in that video was a lie. No, it was all too real. The government really had approved the use of Boxutrin in the food industry. So, these activists had staged a protest on the steps of the Capitol building.

One of the links in the forum led to a video of police tear-gassing and beating protestors. A girl who couldn’t be much older than me sprawled out on the steps, blood pouring down her face. A young man tried to help her, covering her body with his, and he got the same beating she had. It was terrible, shocking, enough to get anybody’s blood up. Including the members of my group.

We have to do something, Kiki insisted. This is disgusting! They can’t get away with it.

The cops wouldn’t have worked so hard to get them out of there if everything they protested wasn’t true, Daniel added. They’re all in the government’s pocket, of course, and the government is in the food industry’s pocket. It’s disgusting.

I was curious. Have any of you seen the original video that sparked all of this?

You mean from The Alliance? Josh asked.

Yes, the Alliance, I replied. My fingers tingled as I typed the words. I never thought I would type them together again.

Yeah, I saw it months ago, but I had no idea it was for real, Kiki admitted.

Josh evidently agreed. Me, neither. It’s one thing to read something like that, but then you find it’s true. I mean, what are we supposed to do about it? It’s too big.

That’s what she said, Daniel quipped.

Not to you, she didn’t, Josh fired back with a smiley face to show he was only kidding.

Ugh. Boys. Can we get back on topic? I grinned at Kiki’s reply.

Yes, I said, I think we should. Though I’m not sure exactly what the topic is. I wouldn’t lead them into it. No way. I would let them think it up themselves. I wouldn’t trick them or manipulate them—I knew how it felt when somebody I’d trusted manipulated me. I wouldn’t put ideas into their heads.

But I couldn’t deny the little rush of excitement that started at my toes and ended somewhere around the top of my head. If my hair had stood on end, I wouldn’t have been surprised. What were the odds that Boxutrin would come into my life again? It couldn’t be a coincidence. I didn’t believe in coincidence, anyway.

The topic is Boxutrin and how The Alliance was really on to something. They haven’t updated the blog in months and months, Josh reported. What do you think happened to them?

“They fell apart,” I whispered to myself. “I broke them up, and they fell apart.” To think I had the power to do that, to break down a group that had been working together for years, still gave me a little rush. I wished I could tell my friends about it, but I still didn’t trust them that deeply. Maybe they never needed to know. It would be something I’d take to my grave, most likely.

Maybe they got too close, and the government shut them up, Kiki theorized. Maybe we shouldn’t even be talking about this.

I’m sure it wasn’t anything like that, I said. I heard a few of them went to jail for other things, totally unrelated.

Where did you hear that? Daniel asked.

Oh, I don’t remember. “Shut up, Daniel,” I muttered.

I let them keep talking as my thoughts spun. Was it worth getting into? Should I? They were socially aware. They were smart. They were discreet and mature—I could trust them to keep whatever we did to themselves.

And I couldn’t help the pull of the whole idea. I must admit I missed the excitement. I missed feeling like what I was doing mattered. This time, I would be in control. I wouldn’t lead my group in the wrong direction the way Richard had led me. The way I’d let him lead me.

If you were gonna do something about it, what would you do? I asked.

Daniel jumped in. The people need to know. I would continue the work The Alliance tried to start.

  Yeah, Kiki agreed.

In a heartbeat, Josh added. And I know everybody else in the group would, too.

I had a choice to make. There was no going back if I went forward.

I took a deep breath before typing.

I think I have an idea, I began.
