He was heating up some food his chef had left for him for lunchtime when he got a text message. David was surprised when he saw it was from Dagmar, asking to be let in as she was outside. What was she doing here? She would be in the middle of her shift right now and Dagmar didn’t keep her phone on her during shifts.

  Something had to be wrong.

David went into his office and pressed the button to open the gates. Two minutes later, Dagmar was pulling up outside his house. David hurried outside, beaming when he saw her climb out of her car. Whatever the reason for being here, he wasn’t going to waste it.

“Hey.” He kissed her. “Not that I’m complaining but what are you doing here? I thought you were on your shift.”

“I was.” Dagmar grimaced. “My boss told me to go home.”

  “Why?”

Then they entered the hall. David saw it as soon as Dagmar went into the light. She had dark bruises already coming up on her neck. They looked like finger bruising.

David felt like someone had punched him in the chest. Someone had hurt his Dagmar. He touched her arm, slowing her to a stop.

  “What happened, Dagmar?”

  “What?”

“Don’t give me that. Your neck.”

Dagmar’s hand went to her neck. She could barely hide the flinch as she touched her throat.

“It’s nothing. Not for you to worry about.”

“Not for me to worry about? It was bad enough for you to be sent home. And you say it’s nothing for me to worry about when you come home covered in bruises?” David could feel the anger building and did his best to fight it down. “Who did that?”

For a moment, he thought Dagmar wasn’t going to tell him. Then Dagmar’s shoulders slumped.

  “It was Luke.”

“Luke?” Did David know a Luke? Then his memory clicked. “Luke, as in Brittany’s ex-boyfriend, Melanie’s father? What on earth were you doing with him?”

“He and Susie got into a fight and Luke came off the worst. We got called to him.”

“I thought you had a restraining order against Susie.”

“We organized with the cops that they take her out and away and then we’ll deal with Luke. But he refused to be treated by a black woman so we walked back out.” Dagmar scowled. “Sadly, Susie wasn’t out of the vicinity and when she told Luke I was the one who called the cops on her, he attacked me.”

David stared at her. She wasn’t happy about her wounds but she sounded as if it was a walk in the park for her, something that happened every day. David couldn’t believe this was a regular occurrence. Surely paramedics weren’t being attacked every day?

He swallowed when he realized his thoughts were getting out of control.

“He tried to strangle you because you stopped a child being kidnapped by a drug-crazed woman?”

“Because I supposedly harmed his mother. She still thinks I’m the one who made her hurt her ankle.”

  David scowled.

  “I hope you’ve pressed charges.”

“Of course I have,” Dagmar said indignantly. “And it was in front of cops so he won’t be walking away so easily.” Dagmar rolled her eyes and squeezed his arm. “I’m fine, David, really. It’s just a precaution. I’ve just got a sore throat.”

“You don’t look okay,” David growled. He moved away and opened the closet, grabbing at his jacket. “Where’s that bastard now?”

“At the hospital. He went in another ambulance under guard. They wouldn’t let me ride in the back to give him a beating of my own.” Dagmar then realized he was heading towards the door. “David, where are you going?”

  “Don’t ask and I won’t tell.”

  “David, wait!”

But David ignored her. If he listened, Dagmar would be talking him out of it. And David was too mad to listen to reason.

  Chapter 11

David arrived at the hospital and made his way through the front doors. It only took a few questions to find out where Luke was. Being a benefactor of the hospital and he had been visiting a lot due to Rachelle previously, nobody questioned him. They just saw a rich man looking for someone and simply pointed him in the right direction.

If they thought he was going to do something wrong, they didn’t say anything or even try to stop him. David was glad about that.

Luke was in a room of his own, lying on a bed with his head bandaged. He looked like a pasty mess. The drugs he took had ravaged his body so he was practically a skeleton. If David didn’t know about the drugs, he would think the man was seriously ill.

And he was going to definitely need a hospital after he was done with the man.

David shut the door and locked it. He wasn’t going to do much, just make sure Luke knew never to come near Dagmar again. Hopefully, no blood would need to be shed.

Although Luke wouldn’t get the chance.

Luke opened his eyes as David approached the bed. His eyes widened in surprise.

  “You’re not my doctor.”

  “No, I’m not.”

“Then who the hell are you? Get out of here.”

“When I’m good and ready.” David leaned on the rail of the bed, glowering at the invalid. “You messed with the wrong woman, Luke.”

  “Do I know you?”

“You’ve probably recognized my picture in the paper. I’ll give you a clue. Ritz and glamour.”

It took a moment for Luke to realize what he meant. And another moment before he recognized him. David saw it dawn on his face.

“David Mach? The billionaire?” Then his face went even whiter. “Mach as in Mach Machines MC?”

“The very same.” David felt some satisfaction as Luke looked like he was about to faint. “I’m also Brittany’s brother-in-law. And you just laid your hands on my girl.”

  “Your girl?”

“The paramedic who came to your place. The one you put your hands around.”

Luke stared. Then he started laughing.

“That black bitch is your girlfriend? More fool you. She’ll drain you dry.”

David snarled, which had Luke shrinking back.

“That black bitch is a better person than you. She doesn’t beat up women high on drugs or neglect her children.”

“No, she beats up little old ladies.”

David barked out a harsh laugh.

“Your mother can hardly be called a little old lady. Besides, it wasn’t Dagmar who hurt her. The ankle was Susie’s own fault. The rest of it was me.”

  “You?”

“Yes. And you’re lucky I didn’t kill your mother. She almost killed Rachelle.” David moved closer, feeling intense satisfaction as Luke shrank back. “You made a mistake ever laying your hands on Brittany. But you made a bigger mistake attacking Dagmar for something she never did.”

Luke was a coward, through and through. He wouldn’t hit back at a man. A warning would be enough to keep him at bay, at the very least. But then Luke got some confidence back and he was sneering at David.

“And what are you going to do about it?”

He wasn’t going to listen to words. He was more stupid than David realized.

  “This will do for now.”

And he punched Luke in the face. His hand exploded in pain but it felt good to see Luke’s head snap back against the pillows. Luke cried out and clutched at his nose. David placed a hand over his mouth and grabbed his wrist as Luke reached for the nurse’s button. He made Luke look at him.

“If you fancy having more of those, just come looking for me. You can find my building in the financial part of Houston.”

He then withdrew and walked towards the door. He couldn’t risk being in here much longer; someone was going to catch him. He was unlocking the door when Luke yelled after him.

“I’ll sue you for that! I’ll get you for every penny!”

  David smirked.

“No one’s going to believe a benefactor of that hospital attacked you in bed. I’ll already have got myself three witnesses to p
rove I was elsewhere.”

  Luke glowered at him.

“You think you’re so clever, don’t you?”

“Well, when you grew up with my family, you learn a thing or two. And we don’t take kindly to our women being hurt.” David put a finger to his lips. “Don’t try taking me on, Lukie. You won’t win. And touch, speak, or even look at Dagmar and I’ll rip your head off.”

He could hear Luke protesting as he left but David ignored it. There was no one around, not even a security guard. David smirked to himself as he made for the nearest staircase. He wasn’t one to do something against the law, not since he became an adult, but there were times when he found it a lot more satisfying than anything else.

  *****

Dagmar paced about David’s hallway. It had been an hour since David had left. What the hell was he doing?

A lot of ideas were flying around her head but Dagmar didn’t want to fixate on one. What if she got it wrong? But what else other than getting even would make David run out like that? He had to be going after Luke?

Dagmar didn’t think he was that stupid to attack Luke in a hospital. But David had grown up on the fringes of the law as a child. They had probably taught him things that no ordinary person would even contemplate. Dagmar had a feeling he was going back to their life right now.

If he had, that could put her career on the line if it went back to her. And Dagmar loved her job. She didn’t want to lose it because of David.

After two hours, David was back. Dagmar heard the tires of his car pulling up outside. She planted her hands on her hips and waited impatiently. This man had a lot of answering to do.

She laid into David almost as soon as he entered the house.

  “What the hell was that?”

  David blinked at her.

  “What?”

“Don’t play innocent with me, David. What the hell was that all about? Why did you run out like that when you heard what had happened to me?”

David closed the door and shrugged out of his jacket.

“I went to deal with some business.”

“What sort of business?” Then Dagmar saw the cracked knuckles on David’s right hand. They looked recent. Recent enough that they were still bleeding. “What have you done, David?”

“Nothing for you to worry about.”

David went to the closet. Dagmar followed him as he opened it and hung up his jacket.

“Like hell it isn’t. You went after Luke, didn’t you?”

David didn’t answer but Dagmar could tell. She punched his back.

“What the hell were you thinking, David? He’s in the hospital! Are you insane?”

“He laid his hands on you!” David slammed the door and spun around, grabbing Dagmar’s arms as she stumbled and nearly fell. “What was I supposed to do when you told me what he did? Stand around twiddling my thumbs?”

“It’s nothing I haven’t come across in my job.” Dagmar slapped his hands away. Her head was pounding. “Come on, I was shot a few weeks ago! I can handle it. But it would be nice to have someone hold me and comfort me instead of storming away to beat the crap out of a hospital patient! Even if he is the scum of the earth, you just don’t do that!”

While the thought that David would stand up for her, something Jeremy or her ex-husband had never done for her before, was a nice thing and felt good, Dagmar didn’t like the fact he had done something that could get him arrested and could risk her job. That job was everything to her.

David glowered at her. He didn’t look like the David she had gotten to know. And that scared her.

“You’re going to have to get used to it, Dagmar.” He brushed a finger across her cheek. “If you get hurt, I’m not going to stand back and let it happen without repercussion.”

“David, last time I checked we’re not actually in a relationship.” That hurt to say but it was the truth. “Friendship, maybe, friends with benefits, definitely, but that doesn’t give you the right to do what you did.” She paced away from him, hitting herself in the chest. “What do you think is going to happen to my career? People know there’s something going on between us and they will know Luke attacked me while I was on duty. It won’t take much to put two and two together. They’ll think I sent you!”

  “I can handle it.”

Dagmar didn’t want him to handle it. He had done the wrong thing, in her mind. She could have no job to go back to when she went back to the hospital. This was not how she wanted things to end between them.

She couldn’t be here any longer. David was going to get out of control. Standing up for her was one thing but doing this could ruin things for both of them. Dagmar needed space to calm down and think properly. That she couldn’t very well do with David looming over her.

She grabbed her gym bag from by the door and hurried out to her car. David hurried after her.

  “Dagmar? Where are you going?”

“I got to where I am on my own, David. I didn’t have any help from anyone, not even my parents.” Dagmar opened the trunk of her car and tossed her gym bag in, glaring at David as she slammed it shut. “I don’t need your help.”

  David looked stunned.

“You…you won’t let anyone help you when you’ve been harmed? Isn’t that what you wanted in a man?”

“I didn’t ask for you to go into the hospital and attack a patient! I won’t hang around to hear about the consequences of you acting without your brain.”

“That’s not fair!” David snapped. “Aren’t I allowed to care about you?”

“That wasn’t caring! If you think that was caring about me, you need to rethink how to take care of a woman. What they want, not what you really want to do. A woman’s feelings are completely different.”

Dagmar knew arguing wasn’t going to get them anywhere. She went to the driver’s door. It was then David seemed to realize what she was doing.

  “Dagmar? Where are you going?”

“I’m going back to my apartment. I’m going to need to have some time alone.”

“What?” David looked like he had been hit over the head.

  “What about us?”

Dagmar paused. Them? Was there a them? Before David’s actions, Dagmar had certainly thought so. Now…

She swallowed and shook her head.

“I don’t know yet. I need to think.” She opened her door and climbed in. “I’ll call you if and when I’m ready to talk.”

  “Dagmar…”

But Dagmar shut the door and turned on the engine. She was aware of David watching her leave but she didn’t look back. If she did, just seeing David might make her turn back.

  *****

It was past midnight when Dagmar got back to her apartment. She was exhausted, her throat hurt, and she felt as though she couldn’t cry any longer.

Leaving people before had never been as bad as this. Dagmar didn’t know what to do anymore. For the first time in a while, there had been something stable, something safe about David Mach. Despite their income gap, they connected and were good together. Especially in bed. Dagmar knew it couldn’t last.

Even with his wealth, David was a biker through-and-through. He thought with his fists, not with his head. Dagmar didn’t know if that was going to work at all with her. She was a person who used her head. Keeping David in check wasn’t going to be easy; no woman kept David from doing what he wanted to do.

But, even with that, Dagmar felt a great loss leaving him. She felt the loss as she climbed the stairs to her apartment. Coming home to him, whether it was at her apartment or his home, had become a routine Dagmar had enjoyed. It was nice coming home to someone, even if it wasn’t written in stone. David was a better companion than he gave himself credit for.

Dagmar knew she needed some space. But she didn’t know for how long. All she wanted to do right now was have a shower and go to sleep.

But as she was running the bath, the intercom went. Dagmar ignored it. If it was David, she wasn’t going anywhere near it.
But it kept going and going. Finally, Dagmar had enough. She turned off the shower and went to the intercom.

But it wasn’t David she saw on the screen. It was Brittany. Dagmar was confused. What was Brittany doing here at this time of night?

“Brittany? What are you doing here?”

  “Can I come up, Dagmar?”

Dagmar sighed. She wasn’t about to have this over an intercom. She pressed the button to open the front door and went hunting for her dressing gown. Brittany may have been a friend, but Dagmar wasn’t about to have a conversation in a vest and shorts with no bra on.

By the time she had found her dressing gown in the back of the closet, Brittany was coming through the open door. Dagmar came out of the bedroom, tying the belt. Brittany gasped when she saw her.

“Dagmar. You’ve been crying. What’s wrong?”

Dagmar hadn’t realized she looked like she had been bawling her eyes out. She sniffed and wiped at her cheeks with her sleeves.

“I’m sorry. Just something in my eye. It’s taken forever to get out.” She gestured at Brittany. “What are you doing here? Who’s looking after the girls?”

“Nick, of course. I’m not a single mother.” Brittany went to Dagmar and took her hands, guiding her to the couch. “Sit down and talk to me.”

  “What’s going on?”

“David called Nick in a state. He said you’d walked out on him.” Brittany sat, pulling Dagmar down with her. “I was concerned about you so I came over to see if you wanted company.”

Dagmar was touched. Brittany was more Callie’s friend but she was fond of Brittany. Any company that wasn’t David was better than no company. She slumped against the cushions with a heavy sigh.

“Just for a little while. If you don’t mind?”

“Of course not. I’ve been having bouts of insomnia lately.” Brittany brought her legs up and sat on them. “What happened?”

  “You haven’t seen them yet?”
