“You’re looking at me like you want to fuck me,” Nathan says, sitting up and cupping my cheek.

“Maybe I was thinking about you fucking me,” I whisper and look up at him.

He growls and then inhales sharply as I reach down and wrap my palm around his semi erect cock. I lick my lips and feel the silky-smooth skin, the muscle beneath growing harder and stiffer.

“Skye,” he groans, looking down at my nipples protruding from the thin material of my tank top.

Rough fingertips slip the thin straps down my shoulders to expose my chest. My nipples are hard as stone and darker now and I follow his eyes down. His head dips and takes my small mound between his thumb and fingers, plumping the flesh for his lips to attach. My fingers tangle in his hair, my legs spreading as my hips circle. The fist on his dick moves faster, tightening with involuntary spasms as he sucks my nipples hard.

“Oh God,” I gasp. “Mmmm, touch my pussy, please.”

He groans against my skin while grabbing my hips and laying me down, his lips pressing kisses over our baby. I love watching him when he does this, I love that he loves my body like this, swollen ankles and all. My panties slide down my legs then Nathan’s hands push my thighs apart.

“You’re so wet, it’s different than it used to be,” he says looking down at my pussy with awe in his voice, fingertips running over the juices there.

“Thicker…sweeter.” He raises his hand and sucks his fingertips between his lips. “So fucking good.”

My body shudders. He always makes a point to tell me how my body has changed with pregnancy. I love that he notices, even the small things like the texture and aroma of my cum.

“Okay, I need you to hurry, I’m on the verge of orgasm and you’re not even touching me,” I pant.

This comment earns me a smile, before his hands take my wrists and helps me sit up, pulling my hips up onto his lap. My knees tuck into his ribs as Nathan pulls me in for a long kiss. His hands are in my hair, his tongue lapping against mine as I feel the thick hard press of his cock against my clit. My arms brace his shoulders as I grind against him and moan, but my belly is in the way so I can’t get a good angle this way. I lift up as he grabs my ass to help me, positioning my opening at the bell end of his dick. He slips in easily, since I’m beyond drenched. It’s so deep this way, the moment he’s seated completely inside, my breath hiccups.

I begin to rock on him, trying to find a rhythm as he looks up at me, his hands caressing my face and hair. His eyes on me makes the connection between us so strong and undeniable. But it’s the way he’s looking at me with amazement as I show him how much pleasure he gives me, that I can’t hide how good he feels. Even though what’s happening between us feels physically and emotionally good, it’s not enough.

  “You need more?” he asks.

I nod and adjust my legs so my feet are flat on the bed, leaning back and putting my weight on my hands behind me. His big rough hands grip my hips as I raise up and he pulls me down and we work in tandem at a fast pace. He’s moaning and grunting as he watches me slide up and down his cock, and I feel my orgasm unfurling inside me. My legs and arms tremble as my head falls back, instantly one of his hands is at the back of my head and forcing it back up.

“No, no, I need to see your face when you come,” he tells me and I bite my lip while forcing my eyes to stay open.

The wetness between my legs feels like it’s everywhere, on our thighs and coating his pubic hair as it brushes against my clit. I teeter on the verge of orgasm for long minutes and even rub my clit, but still there’s no detonation. Nathan stops thrusting into me and adjusts my leg once again, this time up to his chest as he turns me sideways, resting my body on one hip as he puts his hands on my shoulders and resumes fucking me.

“Holy…ohhh, Nathan, I’m going to come, don’t stop,” I pant.

His cock is so deep this way and I can’t control my body’s reaction, the words being pushed out of me with every thrust. My body stiffens, my hands trying to find purchase on something to dig my nails into, settling on the sheets.

“Fuck, shit, fuck, fuck, shit,” he’s chanting and it only takes a minute like this before both our bodies are tightening and we come in sync. The connection is overwhelming. I love this man so much and feel so at one with him. Hormones rage through me as I rest my forehead against his, my hands caressing his hair.

“Sorry that took me a long time-”

“Shut up,” he sighs and rolls us back onto the pillows, positioning me beside him. “Don’t think I don’t love having to work sometimes to make you come.”

I smile and kiss his shoulder, falling asleep moments after he does.

It’s finally the night before the baby shower, and I’m on my hands and knees frantically cleaning. My nerves are shot for some reason, anxious for tomorrow to hurry up and come. The nursery is still not done, but I feel like once I get things at the shower I will finally be able to get it together. It’s the final hurdle before the baby arrives, and the mix of excitement and sheer terror is taking over every waking thought.

“Babe!” Nathan shouts from the bottom of the steps.

  “Yeah?”

  “Where are you?”

“In the bathroom,” I holler back.

  “Don’t overdo it up there.”

  “Okay,” I roll my eyes.

“I’m running to the hardware store for some more trim, you want to come with me?”

Nathan was finally done with the sunroom and just putting the finishing touches on.

  “No, I’m almost done.”

“Need me to stop and get you anything?”

“Yes, a maid and a butler…preferably both male, maybe with a Viking look-”

“Okay, bye,” he cuts me off.

When I’m finished, I grab all my cleaning supplies and head downstairs. I walk into the kitchen and open the pantry door to put everything away, when I hear the side door open.

“That was fast,” I say, exiting the room and closing the door behind me before turning.

My heart stops when my eyes land on Tyler. Instantly I’m shaking, my knees go weak, and my heart pounds. He’s standing only feet from me, and it’s such a shock I almost don’t feel like this is real, until he speaks.

“Skye,” he says, looking down at my belly.

I gasp hard and protectively put my hands on my stomach, as I step back. Tyler looks different than the last time I saw him. His hair’s longer, and he has a beard. He’s still built and has that crazy look in his eyes like he did in my parents’ kitchen. But his eyes are different, dead. The intensity of his stare is haunting,

“I can’t believe you’re pregnant…when Amber told me- I had to see for myself,” he says with disgust, and the mention of my sister’s name runs ice through my veins.

I’d made a huge step towards mending the relationship with my sister by inviting her to my baby shower. To finally feel comfortable that I could tell her where I lived, and to hear she betrayed me by telling Tyler, is destroying. I was finally over how she treated me after Tyler assaulted me, but it all comes back, the feelings and the shock.

“Oh God,” my breath rushes out.

“Yes, big sis has been helping me try to find you. When my failure to locate you had me at my wits end, I had her contact you and try to convince you that she wanted to be civil.”

“The first time she called me, you were the one she kept covering the mouth piece to talk to,” I state, because it begins to make sense now as I look back.

I don’t know what I feel. No words I can think of can describe this blow. It’s more than my heart, it’s everything.

“She never believed that I ever hurt you, she thinks I could never do such a thing,” he says in a tone of voice as if he’s mocking words she’s said to him before.

I shake my head, because my mind isn’t able to understand this.

“I’ve been watching you, you and…hi
m,” he adds with a snarl.

He was watching us, and we had no idea. A cold chill runs through me, thinking of not only how creepy that is, how violating, but wonder what he saw. I can see that by him observing my happiness, with Nathan, must’ve only made him angrier towards me. I continue to back up, and he follows. I see something in the waist band of his jeans, a gun. I freeze, like a deer in headlights. There can’t be any other reason for him to have that, other than to hurt me or my unborn baby. I feel sick to my stomach as panic and dread take over.

“I’m surprised you still look recognizable by the way, I thought I did more damage to your face,” he shrugs almost like he’s disappointed.

My arms wrap around my belly, I know he’s here to kill me, but my fears are all for my baby. He watches my movement, looking down at my stomach and back up at my eyes. I want to see some sort of pity or that seeing me like this will change his mind. But I only see blankness, void. He’s not there; he’s not any remnant of the man I knew before.

“Please,” I gasp. “Please, let’s just talk, or-” I swallow, well, attempt to swallow. There’s no saliva in my mouth, and my knees now threatening to give way.

“Talk?” he questions with raised brows. “I don’t have anything to talk about with you, Skye.”

“But I-I do,” I stammer. “Why are you here? Didn’t almost killing me before give you some satisfaction? You got away, you could start over, be someone else-”

“Shut the fuck up!” he growls. “You don’t get to try and rationalize this, you don’t get to try and reason with me.”

He steps closer, and I step back.

“Nathan will be back soon,” I squeak out.

That thought makes me sicker, the images of them fighting and Nathan being shot flood my mind. I know I have to move, to run. But I’m terrified he will catch me and do something to my baby, the baby is my only concern. My mind can’t click into fight mode, to even think of what to fucking do.

“Why are you here?” I repeat.

My bare feet slowly shuffle back, trying to get his attention more on my words than my motions. If I can just keep him talking. But shit I don’t know what that will even do, I have no plan.

“You ruined my life,” he says through gritted teeth.

I have to hold in my scoff. I ruined his life? How about, he ruined his own life.

  “I didn’t-”

“Shut up!” he snaps and I startle. “You told the cops what happened, I can never practice law again, never. Because you couldn’t be loyal, and you ran my name through the mud.”

If I wasn’t sure before, now I know he’s crazy.

“Did you honestly think I wouldn’t find you?” his words matter-of-fact. That frightening calmness in his tone of voice he always has when he’s about to hurt me.

I can try to keep him talking until Nathan gets here. But when he does, he’s unarmed. He’s unarmed because his gun is in the drawer…the drawer behind me. It’s then my plan locks into place.

“I’m sorry, Tyler. Tell me what I can do, s-s-something to h-h-help you get your life back,” I tell him, and as I speak my back hits the counter, and I know the drawer handle is right above my hand.

He gives me a humorless laugh. “I can never do anything ever again with my life. Why do you get to be happy when you stole everything from me? Why should I let you live when I won’t ever have freedom? I want to know that when I go to jail for the rest of my life, that you and your bastard baby are DEAD!” he shouts and reaches into his waistband for his gun.

I pivot and pull open the drawer, my adrenaline pulsing and heart pounding. Grabbing the huge gun with both my shaking hands, clicking the safety off with my thumb. The sound of his gun going off echoes in my ears only a moment before I feel the exploding pain in my shoulder. It doesn’t stop me from turning back to face him with the gun raised in front of me. Pulling the trigger at the same time he does. Our eyes lock and everything happens in slow motion. His eyes are wild and inhuman as his mouth opens with a yell. Like a movie, I almost see the bullets we’ve both fired moving through the air towards one another. I know this will kill me and I send a silent message to my baby:

  Mommy loves you.

I pull up in the driveway and shut off the engine, reaching over towards the passenger seat and grabbing the pieces of wood I just bought. The door to my truck whines as I shut it, but I swear I hear something else. Ignoring the latter thought, I head for the side door and a smell hits my nostrils, gun powder. I stop and take a deep inhale. Yes, it’s definitely gun powder and at the same moment it’s recognized, I hear the sound again and look up.

The side door is open and I hear gurgling. My heart drops to my stomach as I fling open the screen door and see a man lying on the floor. Blood pools under his body, his hand clutching his throat as blood gushes from his mouth, his eyes pleading. For a moment relief washes over me, Skye killed this bastard, this has to be Tyler.

“Skye!” her name dies on my lips as I look further inside and see more blood, a trail of blood on the floor towards the hallway. I step over Tyler and run. I have to brace my hands on the doorway to not trip over her as I round the corner. She’s lying on the floor, her eyes are open but she’s pale and blood covers her, including her hands which are protectively wrapped around her belly.

“Skye, baby.” I kneel down and roll her onto her back. “No, no, no, no, no, no!”

Her eyes don’t focus on me and I don’t know what to fucking do. Blood is gushing from her shoulder and somewhere else on her lower body. I reach up and grab a stack of clean towels sitting on the side table and push them hard against the front and back of her shoulder. My heart is racing, but I feel like there’s not enough oxygen in the room, and every inhale isn’t enough. There’s so much blood and my hands run over her body trying to locate her injuries.

“Nathan,” her voice is a whisper and I can’t see her, my eyes water and burn and her form because a blurry shape.

“Nathan,” she repeats and reaches up and cups my cheeks, the blood on her hands warm on my skin and I bow my head on her chest.

  “Don’t leave me,” I chant.

  “Nathan.”

  I raise my head.

  “K-K-Kill him.”

Her eyes blink slowly as her arms drop to her sides. I nod but there’s no way I’m telling her that I’m not going to kill him, that I want him to suffer and lay there until he struggles for another breath. Regardless, it will be nothing in comparison of the hurt he’s caused Skye. I wipe my eyes and reach in my pocket for my cellphone.

  “911, what is your emergency?”

“Please come, my wife’s been shot,” I pant and don’t recognize my own voice.

  “She’s been shot?”

  “9987 Foreman Drive.”

I drop my cellphone to the floor and cup her face in my palms, my lips press against hers and I try to breathe in her smell, grasping at some form of comfort. But all I smell is blood. I feel her faint exhales on my wet cheeks and never before in my life have I felt so helpless. I’ve been in terrible situations before, but I’ve never shut down like this.

“Please, please don’t leave me…I can’t do this without you.”

I mean life, there’s no way I can go on living without her. My hands move to her belly, unsure if our little person is even alive in there, when I feel a hard kick against my fingers.

“Skye, wake up, you gotta stay with me,” I plead. “You have to fight. You’re so strong I know you can do it. The baby needs you, I need you, you can’t give up.”

My eyes scan her pale face, her eyes moving under her lids before that stops and I press my ear to her chest and listen for a heartbeat. It’s faint but there, and as I register that sound, focus on that rhythm, the sounds of sirens come from the distance. I don’t know if shock kicks in, but an out of body feeling comes over me. My vision clears, but the words and sounds are echoes and then non-existent.

  F
lashing red lights fill the dark house through the windows. Hands push me aside as two paramedics kneel on either side of Skye. They touch her and listen to her body, and I stumble back onto my feet, turning and entering the kitchen. Another paramedic is working on Tyler and I feel the rage fill me, the anger that this asshole had robbed me of Skye so many times. That he put his hands on her. That he’s tried to kill her twice. I stomp over to the crouching medic and pull him to his feet by his shirt. He whirls around and looks at me with wide eyes.

“Work on my wife, let this worthless animal die like the piece of garbage he is.”

My voice again is like I’ve never heard before, as if something has taken over my body. After a long look in my eyes I can see the paramedic realize he won’t win this. Slowly, he begins to nod and pulls away from me. The pool of blood around Tyler’s body is larger than when I first came in, and again, and whatever has taken over my body fucking loves it. I loom over him, looking down and feeding off the look in his eyes, the suffering has to be unimaginable, the fear, the pain. But it’s nothing in comparison to how he made Skye suffer, physically and emotionally for years, during and after their relationship.

“Sir, we are taking your wife to Bannister General.”

I turn and see as two of the paramedics carry the gurney Skye is on, her eyes are closed. I snap out of the beast inside, and feel myself come back, taking over and my focus is solely on her. Her wounds are covered with gauze but I can see red begin to soak through them. I reach for her hand but let go when they reach the hallway to the side door. The third paramedic nudges my shoulder to follow as he stays behind and I know he’s going to help Tyler, he morally has to, but fuck it.

Skye is loaded into the ambulance as I climb aboard and the sirens flick on as we take off down the road. The paramedic left in the back with us is working on her, pumping oxygen with his hand as he holds a stethoscope to her belly. I watch him and will him to tell me what the hell is going on, but he relays information to the driver in medical lingo I can’t comprehend.
