5 MONTHS LATER
“Hurry,” I shout in excitement.
He stops hammering and gawks at me.
“Hurry, you will miss it!”
He drops the hammer on the ground and darts to me.
“What is it? Are you in pain?”
“No, no. It kicked. Here, you can feel it, too.” I take his hand in mine and gently set it on my engorged belly. I am sitting on a tree trunk opposite the hut.
“Oh, my…I felt it. Calista, this is amazing.”
He is apparently moved. Ever since we found out I am pregnant, he treats me like I am made out of porcelain. He is still my Lord, though. Respect and obedience is expected at all times. Not that he would punish me anymore. I obey him out of love, not out of fear.
The baby suspended my training. As well as the winter that has already made its appearance visible. All those months he was busy, building a small bathroom next to the main room. His friends are quite good handymen and with their skillful assistance he was able to finish it a few days ago. I have a shower now, as it has gotten quite cold for me to swim in the lake. And I have a toilet. It’s not like the one I had in my house. It’s actually pretty primitive, but it works and at least I’m not obliged to go out into the woods every once in a while. Particularly since the forest will be covered in snow soon.
At present, he is building a room for the baby. His friends will provide us with a crib, toys and everything we need. Their children have grown up and they no longer need them. I have acknowledged by now that this is the way their little society works. They share between them all their possessions.
Some of the wolf – girls have become dearest friends of mine. They spend a lot of time here, while their men are working on the hut’s extension. I feel safer being among women who know how my body functions and can answer my every stressed question. They all have children and of course, they will be the ones who will help me give birth. They seem quite experienced and they ease my anxiety.
“Conor, I still worry about it,” I say.
“About the baby?”
“Yes. What if it is a shapeshifter like you? How will I handle it?”
“We both will. Don’t worry. We will love it and teach it everything it will need to know. You are not alone in this. You have me and our friends.”
I guess I still wish I had my parents close to me. It would give me great joy if they met their grandchild. I highly doubt they would be willing to, especially if it is a shapeshifter. In the end, I always come to the same conclusion. That it’s best that we are apart. They would never understand and accept Conor and my new way of life. I hope they are alright and that they have managed to be content with my happiness.
At first, I was suspicious of Ellard. That he would betray Conor’s residence to my parents and they would come and claim me back. I presume he honored my decision and probably feigned amazement the next morning that they found me missing.
“Do you know what I want most right now?” he asks me, playful, sparks glistening in his dark eyes.
“What, my Lord?”
“To stop working, to have a shower and take a long nap for the rest of the afternoon, holding you tightly in my arms.”
I crack a smile.
“As you wish, my Lord.”
He bends towards me and kisses me with undying passion.
Sometimes you have to choose the uncrossed path. The one lacking certainty and reason. And if you happen to step on this path in the company of a wise wolf who will light your way in the dark, making sure your routes to uncharted territories are safe… then, you are a lucky girl.
