  “Again, I will ignore that and move on to what brought me out here.” He looked at her and sighed. “You are the best security engineer in the state. Everyone knows that and unfortunately for me, M & M found that out before I did. But now I know that you are no longer with them, I would like you at Titan Security.”

  “You want me to come and work for you?” she asked and he nodded.

  “And I promise to make it worth your while too,” he said. “I will match what you were getting at M & M and double it.”

  “How do you know how much I was getting at M & M?” Alana asked.

  “I have my sources.”

  “Yeah, the same sources that you were using to spy on me.”

  “You know this is a good deal, Alana. You need a job and I need someone with your prowess at Titan.” Stefan gently forced the hair from his eyes and looked right into Alana’s brown ones. “I will even include a cash bonus if you agree.”

  Alana looked at him and sighed. She could not help but wonder what kind of trick he had up his sleeve. After knowing him for as long as she had, she could not help but think that there was something more going on. Well, sure she was good at her job, but being the best? She was not very sure about that. Because if that was the case, then maybe M & M would have moved mountains to keep her. But somehow, she was one of the four thousand who had been laid off and she was having a very hard time believing that she was indeed the best in the business. She looked at him and sighed.

  “You really want me at Titan?” she asked and he nodded. “Then tell me what the big deal is that you are giving me such a sweet package.”

  “So, you do agree that I have offered you a nice package?”

  Alana reached for her glass and took a sip.

  “I really don’t want to get into this with you, D’Angelo. Just tell me what the big emergency is.”

  “Fine. There is this code I have been working on… well, my team has and it is supposed to be the next big thing in cyber security.” He took a long deep breath and sighed. “I don’t know why or how but somehow there was malware in our system sometime last week and my code ended up being sold to the highest bidder on the dark web last Friday.”

  Alana raised an eyebrow over the other.

  “How much?” she asked.

  “The bid only went as high as eight hundred grand but it is still nothing compared to what that code can do in the right hands…or the wrong ones depending on whoever is behind this.”

  “So, what exactly do you want me to do about it?” Alana asked.

  “Find me the mole at Titan.”

  “What makes you think there is a mole at your company?” she asked shrugging. “It might have been some silly mistake a rookie made.”

  “So I am just supposed to believe that it is a coincidence that my goose that laid the golden egg is now property of your former employer?” he asked and she shook her head.

  “Wait, your new state of the art security system was bought by a company that is laying off four thousand employees countrywide to stay afloat?” she asked and he nodded.

  “I don’t trust anyone else with this information, Alana. I need you onboard.”

  Alana took one last sip before she reached for the bottle and refilled her glass.

  She took a long deep breath and sighed.

  She rolled her eyes again.

  “So, when do I start?” she asked and he crossed one leg over the other.

  “But it’s almost noon and I’m already kind of buzzed,” she said.

  “Fine. Tomorrow.”

  “I want an office with a view,” she said as he stood up.

  “Great. I’ll have it set up.” He began walking towards the front door but she shook her head.

  “D’Angelo, wait.” He turned around and looked at her. “You can’t just offer me double what everyone is making and expect people not to talk. Titan security is a big company and someone is bound to find out that one of the engineers is grossly overpaid. I really don’t want a nepotism scandal with my name on it.”

  “That’s why you are not coming on board as just an engineer,” Stefan said.

  “What?” she asked.

  “You are my new head security engineer,” he pointed and she frowned.

  “I have only ever just handled a small team. I have never had a whole department under me,” she said.

  “Why?” she asked as she looked at him.

  When she woke up on Tuesday morning, Alana was still having a hard time deciding whether or not she had made the right choice. She had been lying in bed awake since
four in the morning wondering whether it was a good move to accept Stefan’s deal. It sure was sweet and promising but at the same time, it was too good to be true. She could not help but wonder what was going on.

  It was not until six thirty did she finally get out of bed. She took a quick shower before she put on a pair of black flare pants and a fitting white top.
