Black Knights, Dark Dungeon

“Thank you, Brea. Go now, get out of here. It’s not a fit place for a lady, and I wouldn’t want anything to happen to you.” He saw the look of fear in her face as she left.
Lugaed looked at Lord Harkin. Lugaed wasn’t a soldier, but he came along anyway. He owed it to Lord Harkin and his wife. He knew it was suicide, but he would do it anyway.
“I have a plan.” They all gathered around as Harkin laid out the plan.
They snuck up the stairway to the kitchen quietly. Harkin peered around the corner and saw three men at the table sipping tea, but they had a bottle of whiskey nearby. He could hear more men talking in the hallway. That was the way to the dungeon stairway.
But, Harkin and his men went the other way, down the hallway away from the dungeon. They found the back stairway up to the second floor. They saw one lone guard walking the hallway, but he quickly disappeared. They made their way quietly down the hallway until they came to the room. Harkin took two men with him as the others guarded the hallway. Harkin slowly and silently turned the door handle and pushed the door open. The hallway was fairly dark, but he could make out the body in the bed. It rustled softly but made no movements as Harkin and the two men crept up on it. Harkin was on one side of the bed, the other two men were on the other. With a nod of his head, they sprung their trap and captured their prey. Bound and gagged, Harkin flung his captive over his shoulders as they all made their way out of the room. The eleven of them made their way back down the back stairway and into the kitchen pantry. The men were gone from the kitchen, but they were nowhere to be found. Harkin and the men snuck back into the storeroom and were relieved when they found themselves in the alley. It was dark and deserted. They quickly snuck out of the village under the cover of darkness. It was a long walk through the dark forest, but by the first light, they saw their ship. The sails were set before the sun came up and the alarm would be sounded.

William had his breakfast, and then, he was off to his office. He had much work to do. It was harder than he expected to rule Wexford, but it did have its rewards. He’d been warned of a possible rescue of the scum’s wife, but he doubted that he’d be stupid enough for such a thing. But, as a precaution, he doubled the number of guards. So far, nothing happened, and he expected that he’d soon surrender to him and that would be the end of it.
It was late afternoon when the captain of his guard entered his office. He was nervous and flushed. “What is it?”
“We can’t find your wife, Lord William.”
“What do you mean you can’t find her? She went to bed last night. Was it slept in?” Maybe she had a tryst with someone in the village and slipped out to meet him.
“Yes, Lord William, but it was messed up this morning. As though there might have been a struggle of some sort. We’ve searched the whole house and found nothing. I have men scouring the village for her, but so far, nothing.”
“Anything unusual last night.”
“Nothing, Lord William, though one of the chambermaids didn’t show up for work this morning. The last they saw of her was last night.”
Could someone have captured Alastair? “Send out more men in the village. I want to know for sure if she’s there. This rebel couldn’t have done this.” Was he that cunning?

Alastair was woken suddenly. Something covered her mouth as she struggled but hands were everywhere, slapping hers away as if they slapped a pesky fly. Her arms were pushed behind her and tied too tight. Her fingers began to tingle from lack of blood. Her ankles were bound, so she couldn’t run away. A cloth covered her eyes to blind her. She was thrown over the shoulder of some ruffian, and she bounced along on him. She could hear many footsteps, but they moved softly. It couldn’t be William’s soldiers, they were always loud. She felt her body go up and down stairs, but then, she could feel the cold of the outside air. She was dressed in only her nightgown, and the air was crisp and cold. She heard the sounds of the village, but it gradually grew fainter. Then, she heard the sounds of the woods, owls hooting, night birds singing. The men nearby made more noise and she heard voices talking. Irish voices with their accents.
“Throw a blanket over her, I wouldn’t want her to die of cold,” Harkin said as they made good time through the woods. He wanted to be on water where he felt safer and more comfortable.

They set sail and left Welford behind them. They took to the open sea, far from the coast as they headed back to Dingle Bay. Lugaed stayed behind with the note for Lord William. It was a dangerous task he’d do, but he volunteered.
“It’s time to unveil our captive.” Harkin and some of the men went below where they had her bound tight. Brea had told him of what they had done to Caitlin and the other women in his dungeon. He was furious at the time and pledged revenge. Now, it was his opportunity to extract that revenge.
Alastair finally had the blindfold removed, and she saw six or eight men stand over her. She was on a bed, bound tight. She was thankful that the gag was taken off. “Do you know who I am?”
“No, who are you?” Harkin wanted to make sure he got the right person.
“I’m Alastair de Barry. My husband is Lord William de Barry, Earl of Wexford. He’ll have your head for this,” she blurted out confidently.
“I guess we got the right person, Alastair.”
“What do you mean? Why did you take me?”
“I’m Lord Harkin O'Donoghue, and my wife, Caitlin, along with her two handmaidens, are guests in the dungeon of your husband. I expect you know that.”
“I have nothing to do with the affairs of my husband. Let me go and I’ll have your lives spared,” she spat out defiantly.
“Like your husband, I now have his wife in my dungeon. We’ll see how agreeable you are to serving our pleasure as your husband forced my wife to do.” He turned to the men. “Strip her and spread her to the bed. We don’t have a rack, but this will do just as well.”
The men took to the task with such fervor. They tore off her clothes before they untied her. Four of them each took a limb when the ropes came off her wrists and ankles, but they were traded for new ones. They pulled her arms high over her head and then her legs to the far corners of the wide, wooden bed. They threaded the ropes through the iron rings until her arms and legs were pulled tight.
Her naked breasts were pushed out by the cruel bondage. Her crotch ached with the wide spread of her legs, and her sex was opened up lewdly as the men peered between her legs to inspect her like a piece of meat. She saw the bulges in their trousers and feared what they’d do to her. She knew what her husband did to the women, and she found herself in the same dilemma.
The muscles in her arms and legs were drawn taut as the men yanked cruelly on the ropes. He heard her groan, and some of her bravado was gone now that she was stripped naked and bound so lewdly. Her firm breasts were pushed up high, and with her legs spread so wide, the lips of her pussy pulled back to reveal pink inner lips that beckoned to the eyes. He wished he could make her pay for what her husband did, but he couldn’t. He wasn’t that kind of man and neither were his men. “Release her. Give her a blanket to cover herself, but tie her arms and legs. I don’t want her going anywhere. We’ll not stoop to being like her husband, no matter what he’s done.”
Alastair didn’t understand this Irishman. After what William did to his wife, he wouldn’t do the same to her. She was glad for that, but she couldn’t figure why he wouldn’t. He was a man after all.

Lugaed waited two days per the instructions from Lord Harkin before he delivered the note to Lord William. “I have to deliver it in person,” he told the guard. “It concerns his wife.”
Lugaed was ushered into the house immediately and taken to Lord William.
“You have something for me.”
He handed the note to him and waited while he read it. He saw his face grow flushed and angry. This was the time that Lugaed didn’t know his fate.

; “How did you come about his note?” William’s voice rose up in anger.
“It is from my lord.”
“Do you know its content?”
“Of course. If you wish to see your wife alive, you’ll trade her for Lord Harkin’s wife and her two handmaidens.”
“How do I know he’ll do it?”
“You will take out one of your smaller ships with his wife and two handmaidens. You are not to have more than ten soldiers and eight crew on board. I will go with you. We’ll meet at sea, far away from the coast. I will tell you the location once we set sail. He’ll meet you with a ship with the same number of men. If there is any other ships on the horizon, the deal will be off and I can’t vouch for the safety of your wife.”
“Or yours or his wife.”
“I accept that. His wife would rather have a short life than the life she has in your dungeon.”
“Do I have assurances that Lord Harkin will never seek out villages in England to attack? That is what drew the wrath of the English King Henry II.”
“Yes, he’ll take his wife and go back to his life of fishing.”
William would do anything for his wife. He’d end the terror that Lord Harkin began with the English, and he could go find this Lord Harkin at any time he chose in the future. He was sure that he’d run across him again, and he’d have the upper hand. “I agree. We leave at sunrise.”

Lugaed felt uncomfortable on the Norman ship, but Lord William had followed every detail. Lugaed searched the ship to make sure. Once they were out of sight of the coastline, he gave the captain directions but didn’t tell him how far. It was two days before he told the captain to stop the ship. All around them was water, not a bit of land within sight. “We wait; it shouldn’t be more than a day.”
William felt at a disadvantage, but he didn’t say anything. It was boring to wait, but he did. It was the next morning when another ship came into view. William looked through the telescope and saw that it was about the same size as this one. It was four hours before it came close to his ship but then stopped and dropped anchor away from them.
“You may go or send one of your men to inspect his ship, just as I did with yours. If as agreed, then we’ll pull alongside each other and make the prisoner exchange.” Lugaed noticed that Lord William didn’t go; he sent one of the soldiers.
Harkin was never so glad to see Caitlin in all his life. She didn’t look harmed; though he knew what was done to her wouldn’t be visible. Both sides of soldiers stood along the edge of the decks as the women passed over a plank laid from ship to ship. Harkin never took his eyes off Lord William for an instant, not even when Caitlin came aboard his ship.
So that was him, he didn’t look so fearless. Lord William would have his revenge, though it might not be now, it would be soon enough. The two ships separated, and they set sail in opposite directions.
Epilogue
Harkin took his wife and her handmaiden’s home to Dingle Bay where they stayed to live out their long, rich life. They set about to rebuild the village, but Harkin kept a watchful eye on the horizon at all times for the return of Lord William. Caitlin bore Harkin two sons and a daughter.
Lord William took Alastair home to Wexford, but they soon left to go back to Normandy before he could get his revenge on Lord Harkin. King Henry II got sick of the Irish king and his Norman soldiers and decided they were more trouble than they were worth. He mounted an invasion and took back Ireland. Dingle Bay wasn’t large enough to warrant English troops.
