  Chapter 1

Danny leaned on his bathroom sink, breathing ragged with sweat dripping off of him. Gazing into the mirror, he put his hand through his red hair in frustration, messing it up even further – the hair was already a huge mess from his sleep. He took the cloth laying on his sink and wiped his sweat-soaked face and neck in frustration. The same nightmares always plagued him.

Danny had to get up so he could get some fresh air. He roughly rubbed his temples. A little park he found not too far from his house came to mind. He quickly got dressed in a t-shirt and shorts that clung to his strong thighs and outlined his hefty soldier. He had a quick breakfast and tried to finish reading “The Count of Monte Cristo”, but he just couldn’t concentrate. He put down the book he was reading because he couldn’t focus anyway, and made a cup of what he needed at that particular moment. The cool liquid went down his throat, with his eyes closed, feeling untapped energy coursing through his body. His eyes immediately sprung open, focused and alert.

Danny bent down to tie his shoelaces that came untied. Several times, he ran around the park following the predefined trail. The wind blew on his sweaty skin caressing his moist face. It felt good as he ran through the park. He stopped at a bench to stretch. The hairs on his neck bristled. He slowly got up from stretching and looked around but only saw a lady with a crying baby in her hand; she was trying to console her by making gentle hush sounds. All that was in sight was her stroller, which was next to her. He saw no one else behind him. Almost immediately, he turned his head slowly and looked forward. Shortly after, a man in blue sweatpants with a matching blue t-shirt ran the trails; also, a lady with knee-length pink shorts and a pink crop top speed-walked the trails. Neither was paying attention to him. He shrugged it off as him being paranoid. With a childhood like his, who wouldn’t?

A memory materialized in his head from when he was nine. He woke up and got out of bed one night, and walked to where his father always was - his study. His little hands pushed the heavy wooden door open with ease. Danny padded over to his father’s desk.

  “I’m hungry,” he said.

“Go get something to eat,” his father replied, not even looking up from the papers he was concentrated on.

“Did Mida cook?” He asked. Mida was his nanny at the time.

“No,” his father said, staring into his son’s eyes. He wiped his hand down his face, wiping away the memory.

Danny walked into his house, instantly feeling alone. He solemnly went to take a shower. As he got out of the shower, he wished he had more to look forward to than a day of doing absolutely nothing. He opened his refrigerator to get a cool drink. When he opened it, he saw it needed to be refilled. At least, that meant he had something to do, and it made him so glad. The grocery store was a walking distance from his house, so he decided to take a walk down there. He walked into the store and immediately sensed that someone was staring at him. Danny grabbed a shopping cart and headed to the frozen section. Looking at ground beef, he noticed from the corner of his left eye that a blond woman was looking at him. The woman walked over to him, but before she did, he saw her push up her boobs.

“Excuse me,” she said reaching for ground beef, slowly trying to get his attention. Then she dropped the meat, and said in a quite dramatic manner, “Oh no!” Danny reached down and picked up the meat. The blond pushed up her breasts againh, bent down and said, “Thank you. It slipped.”

“No problem,” he said, handing her the ground beef. She made sure her breasts were visible, and graciously accepted the meat, accidentally brushing Danny’s hand.

“So, you live close?” She asked, trying to start a conversation.

  “Yeah, right down the street.”

“In those new apartments?” She asked in excitement, as her eyes lit up like Christmas lights.

  “Yep, right there,” Danny replied.

“I always wondered how they would look inside”, she said with theatrical excitement. “Can you show me?” she asked, while licking her lips, and staring at him with blatant desire.

  “Maybe another time,” he said.

“I’ll hold you to it,” she said, turning around and sauntering back to her cart.

Danny didn’t love the attention, but for the most part, it was all he got. He didn’t really get much interaction besides women and men coming on to him; he filled out as a teenager and everyone noticed. The attention he got was mostly from women; they flocked to him like a moth to a flame. At first, it was appealing, as he could have anyone he wanted. But eventually, it no longer impressed him; after the incident.

The next day was more of the same; he took a run, and then a quick trip to the store. He always got some sort of meat to cook at night. The day was taking its normal course, until, all of a sudden, Danny sat up in bed. He massaged his temples. His breath was coming out in gasps. As he breathed erratically, his chest rose and fell, with his eyes wide, and sweat drenching his sheets. He thought it was so surreal, while trying to get his breathing under control. It took nearly five minutes to regulate his breathing before he was able to go about his day.

Monique was awoken by her cellphone. She groggily grabbed her phone, with her eyes lazily drifting close.

“Good morning baby,” the voice on the phone said.

Instantly regretting not checking the caller ID, she said, “Don’t call me that.”

She let out an exasperated sigh and put the covers over her head. She had an excuse for being grumpy. First, it was her annoying ex; second, it was early - about six in the morning early, which was way too early for her. She pushed the end call button with so much force, slammed the phone on her small dresser near the bed, and pulled the cover back over her head with a whoosh of frustrated sighs. Monique’s phone rang again. She roughly grabbed it and turned it on silent and went back to sleep. James, her ex, had been calling her for the last two weeks. An instant headache always followed each call. She rubbed her temples from the pain that was assaulting her head. Point proven. Not going back to sleep, she thought grudgingly.

Monique went in search of Tylenol. Her phone buzzed with a text. Monique rolled her eyes when she saw the text and the sender. If James doesn’t back off, she internally groaned. Putting her phone in her pocket, she continued her search for Tylenol. Her phone buzzed again, and then she aggressively grabbed her phone and turned it off. Monique rarely got calls so she wasn’t worried about it being off. Once again, she went on in quest of Tylenol. Luckily for her, she didn’t have to search for so long. A little tinge of joy went through her as she found the Tylenol. She gulped two with some water and headed to work. She knew that self-medication was not a good way to start the day, but she took it regardless.

  “Good morning,” Haley greeted.

“Hi,” Monique sluggishly responded with a yawn
.

“Girl, you okay?” Haley inquired. Monique shook her head, as if to say yes while yawning into her hand. She strolled to her desk and clumsily sat in her seat. Monique must have dozed off because she found Joseph standing in front of her with a steaming cup from nowhere. He handed the cup to her saying, “You need this. Drink.”

Monique would have scoffed at his tone, but he was right; she did need it. She took the cup, breathed in the steam coming from the cup and took a sip. “Hmmm,” she sighed as her breath escaped.

“Thanks,” she said, with her eyes closed. She opened her eyes to Joseph staring at her.

“I owe you one, I did need that.”

A nervous laugh came out, trying to lighten the mood. It seemed to have worked, as he smiled and walked away. He took the fact that he was owed something to heart. She breathed a sigh of relief. Joseph was sweet to her since she came back to Charleston. All his advances were rejected but he didn’t seem to care. He always bounced right back. Monique didn’t have the heart to outrightly tell him to back off. So, she tried giving him hints for him to back off; it was to no avail. The day dragged on with her trying to stay awake. Finally, the time she was looking forward to was here - the end of the day. She looked at her plain, uneven nails. It was obvious she needed a manicure. It was long overdue. Not to mention, she needed a touch up her hair. Getting in her car, she thought about the many things she hadn’t been doing since James started calling. one, she thought. Caring for herself was another one; for instance, getting her nails done. Monique liked getting manicures every two weeks. She also enjoyed facial massages. As shopping crossed her mind, Monique smiled to herself, thinking of her ability to spot a deal. Shawna bragged on her all the time. She said she always wanted to shop with her. Monique had a determined face and thought, Time to take care of me. Tomorrow I’m running. Tomorrow, she whispered, with her eyes looking straight forward, and her jaw clenched.

With socks thrown across his room, and unfolded clothes on his bed, he decided his room needed to be cleaned. Danny took the time to match the socks, then put the socks in the sock drawer. The clothes were folded and put away as well. Suddenly, he froze as a knock sounded at the door. The clothes he folded laid on the floor, in a pile. The book he was going to continue laid upside down on his bed. With the clothes neglected, he made his way to the door, clenching his jaw and making his hands into a fist. He grasped the door handle so tight, you could see his milky white hand turn red. Danny opened the door.

“Brother!” The visitor said in excitement. He gave a still Danny a hug and clapped him on the back. Danny stood there unresponsive. “Little brother, are you going to invite me in?” Danny motioned with his hand, like a half courtesy. His eyes were hard and his jaw was stiffly clenched. The visitor walked in with a smile on his face. He surveyed the place as he walked inside. That also gave Danny time to survey his visitor. Marcus still had tree bark colored skin. He donned a crème colored suit. It was actually on brand for him as he always dressed like he was attending a business meeting.

“So, what you been up to Danny?”

Danny’s voice came out with a bite as he replied, “Nothing.”

“It has to be something that kept you away this long? Bet, I can find out what it is?”

“It’s nothing I said.” Danny said with mounting anger. Marcus read the room, and let himself out with a smile.

“See you around little bro,” he said with a smirk.

Danny slammed his fist on kitchen table, and muttered a curse. He neglected the blood running down his hand from the glass cup he slammed his fist on when he hit the table. Danny explored his memory for anyone he talked to recently. No one came to mind. He walked to his room thoroughly upset. He and Marcus weren’t really brothers, but his father raised him. His father was delighted to have a son who took all his advice to heart. Everything Marcus did pleased him; Danny on the other hand seemed to only disappoint him. It was so easy for Marcus to get in his good graces. You would think he was the perfect brother. He internally laughed at that. Dead animals would turn up around the estate. No one knew where they came from, except for Danny. Marcus had tried to show him many times, how light would drain out of the eyes of animals as he would choke them with his bare hands. As they got older, he had plenty of girlfriends; each looked just like the scared animals that somehow knew their life was over. Surprisingly, for each girl that dumped him, the next day, the news would say they were missing. Danny didn’t know how he did it but he was never found with the girls before they would disappear. Regardless, he is still always a suspect in their disappearance. His girlfriend at each of those times usually finds herself being an alibi, and the vicious cycle continues. Even on Danny’s girlfriends. Point of correction, he only ever had one at seventeen. He couldn’t help but talk to Marcus about it. He even gave him helpful advice when they argued.

Danny was feeling like he might have fallen in love with her. He had made up his mind to tell her that night. She was coming over to chill. He kept checking his watch, as time had passed, and she should have been there. He went to her house and saw two figures on the couch kissing wildly. One figure glanced towards the window. Danny’s jaw hardened and his hands were curled so tight, that blood hit the thirsty ground and disappeared. He knew that sadistic face well. Danny whipped around and got in his car. He hit the wheel, making an impression in it.

He changed the direction of the mirror, as he didn’t want to get a glimpse of himself right now. It was almost as if seeing himself would make him go in there and punch Marcus, and keep punching him until he laid in a pool of his own blood. What purpose would that serve? He would still be a sick, sadistic bastard. Danny calmed down enough to drive. He got home and plopped on his bed, thinking about what he saw. The next minute, he was shoving clothes in a bag and storming down the hall. His movement was interrupted by his father who stopped him and asked, “Did you and that girl finally break up? I told you she was beneath you?”

His father thought that as a prince, he was only to date the girls he had lined up for him to marry. Danny thought otherwise. He wanted to be allowed to date who he wanted to; his jaw tightened. “You did what I asked yet?” He asked, drawing on a cigar. Danny fanned the smoke and gave his father a hard stare and stormed off. Danny heard a door close behind him. He knew that was the sound of the door closing on his past. With a hard face and set jaw, Danny strolled the hall and out of the door, with a newfound determination. He later found out that his girlfriend was missing. She was last seen with mean red marks on her arm and a black eye. He felt very sad for her but then remembered how she ripped his heart out and stomped on it. The sympathy he felt for her quickly faded. A few days were spent in a rundown motel; a place neither his father nor Marcus could find him, or so he thought. He laid on the neatly made-up bed. Danny tried not to think about everyone who laid on those sheets. He shivered with the thought. There was scuffling and yelling outside his door so he peeked out the curtains to see what all the noise was about. The maid was telling a boy in a suit he couldn’t access the room. The boy was, Marcus! Danny’s eyes widened at his discovery. Marcus looked impatient with the maid who was animatedly talking to him.

  Chapter 2

Marcus breathed through his nose, eyes closed, and hands clenched into fists by his side. Danny turned quickly and started shoving his stuff in the duffle bag. He stopped, noticing the maid was no longer ranting. He tiptoed to the window. Halfway there, the door handle jiggled. He froze, took his bag, and headed for the back way out. The cars from the busy road paid him no mind as he rounded the hotel. As he came upon his room, he saw his door hanging on by small splinters. The maid was sprawled on the pavement with her mouth shaped like she would scream. Ugly red marks surrounded her neck with eyes wide as if her last sight was a monster.

Danny shook his head. He had to clear his head. He decided to hit the trails at the park. Running should do that. He loved to run. It gave him a feeling of freedom that he sometimes didn’t feel. The sun beame
d down on him like he was being punished. He wiped the sweat from his forehead, gulped down the bottle of water and wiped his mouth. The sun couldn’t stop the feeling of just being able to run. Running did clear his mind but did it have to be so hot today? The trees looked droopy and bent down, as if they too detested the heat and were asking the people for help. The path looked faint as if it would disappear any minute. Danny’s thoughts stopped as his eyes became glued to her. Caramel skin, brown short hair, short in size, and thick. He couldn’t stop staring at the shorts that clung to her caramel toned legs and a t-shirt that showed her perfect c cups. Her plump butt spoke to him, and he salivated. I got to have her, he thought. Danny jogged in front of her, and tried to talk to her. She took out her headphones and with a quizzical look on her face, she asked, “Can I help you?”

Her high cheekbones and pretty black eyes stared back at him as if they could see his soul, which he hoped not. There was a light sheen of sweat on her forehead; again, no wind today. “Is there a store around here?” he asked. She gave him you stopped me for that look but politely said, “Yes, around the corner.” Did he really just stop me for that? He better be glad I like his deep voice. Like thunder rolling over the clouds

“Thank you so much,” he said, showing off white pearly teeth. Trying not to end the conversation, he continued, “My name is Danny, what’s your name?” She smiled back and said, “You’re welcome. Monique said.” Those lips, he thought. He had to get away from her, as she wasn’t safe.

“Well I’ll see you around, Monique.” He gave her that charming smile again and started jogging the trail. Monique didn’t realize she was staring at him and smiling as if memorized. He was cute. Wonder if he’s married or has a girlfriend? He looked good enough to eat with his shorts - those shorts left her wondering what they held under it - and a shirt that showed off strong-looking pecks. Thinking about it made her lick her lips. There was a splash of freckles everywhere, even on his chiseled face that held the brightest green eyes. Hair you want to run your hands through along with a chiseled jaw, and plump lips. She needed to get laid, shaking her head, she put her earphones back in and ran the trail.
