For a moment, Kate found herself thinking of Jimmy Parker and Logan Nash—the first partner she’d worked with and the last before her retirement. Jimmy had been her mentor and Logan had looked to her for guidance in some areas. Looking to DeMarco, Kate wondered if it might be time for her to close the circle—to be the mentor and teacher to DeMarco in the same way Jimmy had helped her through her first few years.
Not that DeMarco wasn’t already a stellar agent. But being chained to Violent Crimes for so long and then being let loose in the field, she would be an exciting partner to work with.
She thought of Melissa one more time, her daughter who was seriously seeking a career in the FBI, a career Kate had modeled for Melissa’s entire life. The thought made her maternal instinct kick in. But honestly, it also excited her quite a bit.
She took her leave and left through the small waiting area in front of Duran’s office. Before she made it to the hallway, DeMarco caught up to her.
“You’ll come back, right?” she asked.
Kate smiled.
“I just might be too stupid to let it go,” she said.
DeMarco laughed. It was a sweet sound, coming from the throat of the woman who had saved her life two days ago. DeMarco had gotten away with just stitches to her forearm and Kate had managed to get away with nothing more than a severe bruise along her back. And here they were now, laughing about it.
If it was a sign of things to come, Kate thought her year of retirement might just become nothing more than a foolish decision that shrank further and further away in the rearview mirror of her life.
The future, all of a sudden, bloomed brightly ahead on the horizon.
