No Promises

She rolled her eyes. "Like you never did that before. Anyway, it's a good thing I came prepared." She swung her overnight bag onto the armchair, then shrugged and gave him a grin. "Pop kicked me out of the house."

  He blinked rapidly. "Uh…what?"

She couldn't help laughing at the panicky look on his face. "Scared you, huh? Chill. I'm not here to move in." She gave him a flirtatious smile. "I was hoping for a sleepover, though."

"A sleepover? I like that idea." He pulled her to him. Their kisses began playfully, then turned hungry. Rick startled her by suddenly breaking away. "Wait a minute. Your father kicked you out?"

She curled her fingers in the soft cotton of his tee, trying to pull him closer. She was still hungry for his mouth. "It was an exaggeration. I'm not on the street. But I am looking for my own place." Her face grew warm. "You were right about me holding on to my dad. I was doing it more for myself than for him."

He moved her bag to the floor, then sat in the chair, tugging her onto his lap. "I said a lot of shitty stuff. I was mad and wanted to hurt you. Don't do it because of me."

"I'm doing it for me. Anyway, I already decided. Pop and I talked it over. We're both ready to give each other some space." Sam grinned and moved her legs to straddle Rick's lap. "Besides, if I have my own place, my boyfriend can come over anytime he wants."

Sam froze. Shit. She'd called him her boyfriend. They hadn't talked about that yet, hadn't defined their relationship. Hadn't discussed being exclusive, anything like that.

Her mouth twisted in embarrassment. "Uh, I mean…"

He grabbed her hips, bumped her pelvis against his, sending sparks of need shooting through her. A wicked light glinted in his eyes. "Your boyfriend thinks that's an awesome idea."

Her chest expanded with joy. Just as she was about to kiss him again, a ball of black-and-white fur whizzed into the room and leaped onto the arm of the chair. Sam gently picked up the kitten. "Who is this? Wait a minute. Is this the little guy we found at Shankey's?"

"Yep, he's the one. Meet Jake." Rick's matter-of-fact tone belied the color in his cheeks.

Sam remembered how reluctant he'd been to part with the kitten, and how worried he'd been about its future. But he'd done more than worry. He brought the cat home, gave it a name. Wow. One more reason for her to fall in love with him.

"Hey, Jake." She had only a moment to stroke the kitten before it scrambled off her lap and streaked toward the kitchen.

Rick lifted his hips and bumped against her again. "You know, about you getting your own place… It just so happens I have an empty room available."

"Hold on." She placed her hand flat against his chest. "A minute ago when I joked about moving in, you looked like you were facing a firing squad."

"Maybe it's not a bad idea. I've got the space. And it's close enough to Shankey's for you to do that alley-cat stuff. Come to think of it, I still have a score to settle with Big Boy…"

She shook her head firmly. "I need my own place. Thanks for offering, though." In gratitude, she gave him a quick peck on the lips.

Rick slid his hands up her torso and pulled her in for a deep, breath-stealing kiss. When it ended, he spoke. "Maybe I'll hold off looking for a new roommate. I can handle the place on my own. We'll wait a while, talk about it later."

A slow grin crept over Sam's face. "We will?"

"We will." His arms closed around her as he drew her in for another kiss. "It's a promise."
