Freedom's Son: Savage Sons MC 3

"Daniel Hall," one called out, scanning the room.
"Right here," I yelled, not taking my eyes off Joker. "He's right here."
"Daniel, drop your weapon and get on the ground. Now." His voice was commanding, and Daniel looked from the agent to me, and I could see the resignation in his eyes.
I stayed where I was, gun trained on Joker, not trusting that things still couldn't go wrong. I was going to protect myself, and I knew that I had things under control. I looked at Joker and watched as he laid his gun on the ground, watched as one of the agents removed the gun from Joker's reach, and pressed the man to the floor.
Sable didn't say a word, clearly in shock about the scene in front of her.
I lowered my gun, still keeping my finger on the trigger. "Joker, you are about to be held accountable for your sins."
Sable turned to me. "Krystal, what are you talking about? What's going on? Did you know this was going to happen?"
I ignored her and spoke to her husband, whose hands were being cuffed behind his back, as he winced in pain from the agent's knee in his back. "Joker, Maria Alvarez sends you her greetings. She also sends you greetings in the name of her daughter Nadia, whose blood is on your hands."
Joker's eyes widened, and I saw the anger seep from his body, watched as he ceased his struggling and gave up. The two names I'd mentioned were ones he knew, and he realized that they'd finally caught up to him.
Sable pulled at my arm. "Who are Maria and Nadia? What's going on?"
I finally turned to her, and my feelings toward her were mixed. I felt sorry for her — watching her husband being handcuffed and hauled off the floor. But I also felt anger — like her permissiveness, her willingness to look the other way and ignore Joker's appalling behavior — had somehow condoned his actions. It would take me some time to sort out how I felt about Sable, and all I knew was that I wasn't going to be the one who told her what I knew. That would be her son's task.
"Talk to Luke. He'll tell you the truth."
I walked away, leaving the dark bar for the afternoon sunshine, looking for Luke. He was all I could think about, and I had to make sure he was safe. The parking lot was a mess — cars parked every which way, doors open, engines still running. People who'd been in the bar were trying to get the hell out of there, and I hurried through the entire paved space, searching for Luke. I'd been sure he'd be outside, since that's where the arrest was supposed to have happened. Nothing.
I ran inside the clubhouse and searched the room. I saw all of the Sons, all now disarmed and talking to the federal agents who filled the room. No sign of Luke. I searched the rooms, and even put my head in the men's room. And found nothing. The back door was open, though, and as soon as I stepped outside, I saw him.
"Oh my God, there you are," I said, checking to make sure he wasn't hurt and then throwing myself at him. He folded me into his arms, and I felt relief just wash over me. "I'd looked everywhere, and I couldn't find you."
"Tanner told me to stay here, so here I am," he said. "Did they find Joker? Tanner went next door. Was he in there with you? You okay? Sable?"
I laughed. "Calm down, big fella. We're all fine. They arrested Joker next door. He tried to take me as a hostage so he and Sable could get out — not that it would have worked — but you saved me."
"Jesus, what do you mean?" He looked confused.
I moved my jacket aside. "The gun you gave me. It saved me. I pulled it on Joker, and it slowed him down enough that the agents showed up and cuffed him."
He pulled me close again. "Holy shit, Krystal, I sent you over there to keep you safe, and that's the one place he ended up." He took my face in his hands, and looked at me like he was holding something precious. "He hadn't bargained on you being so tough." Luke bent to kiss me, and I felt pride and love mingled, swelling in my chest.
Luke was right. I was tough, and Luke had helped me realize it. I wasn't a victim anymore.
Kate walked up, returning from the other side of the building. "There you are, Krystal. My agents said Joker had tried to take you hostage?" She looked concerned.
"He didn't try all that hard," I said, feeling like a bit of a badass. "I had it under control."
Kate looked at Luke, his arm draped over my shoulder. "Luke, we've got him. Now tell me what the fuck went wrong."
He shook his head. "The courier knew, somehow. He tipped Joker off, and then everything went to hell. All the guys were focused on the front door, and getting into a position to defend themselves, and before we knew it, Joker was gone. He took off out through the back, just as you guys showed up in the parking lot. I ran after him, and your agents didn't want to take any chances. They cuffed me, and that's when you came out."
Kate nodded. "We heard Joker yelling over the wireless transmitter, and we knew something had gone wrong. We had to move." She looked at us both. "I'm glad no one was hurt. The information you gave us made all the difference, Luke. We're very grateful."
"What the fuck?"
We all turned toward the back door, and we could see the rage in Nate's face.
"What the fuck, Luke? You were working with the feds? You fucking ratted your own father out? Jesus, J.C. told us you were a piece of shit, but I didn't believe him until now." Nate looked absolutely disgusted. "You're done, man. Not only will you no longer be one of our brothers, but we're gonna hunt you down and make you pay for what you've done."
Luke let go of me and took a step toward Nate. "Wait a minute, man. You don't know the whole story."
"What I know is that you just got your father arrested, and you're out here talking like you're best friends with the fucking FBI. It's over, man. You thought this would be a fun little game to play before you go back to your little rich boy professional life, but you're not getting out of here so easy."
"Nate, you don't understand. I can explain all of this. There's stuff that you don't know about Joker and Moses. Things you need to know to understand why I did what I did."
"Don't care, man. You're through."
"You have to listen to me."
"Oh, I'll listen to you. We'll all listen to you. Tomorrow night, you're coming in to turn in your cut. We'll let you say your piece right before we vote your rat ass out and decide what we're going to do with you."
"You'll change your mind. You all will, when you hear what I have to say."
"Fucking tell it to the feds, Luke. Be here at eight."
Nate turned on his heel and walked back inside, leaving me, Kate, and Luke standing there.
I looked at Luke. "You knew it wasn't going to be easy, sugar."
"I know. I just wish it hadn't gone down quite this way," he said, shaking his head. "I wanted to be the one to tell them about how the feds ended up here. Now I have to overcome the fact that every man that's going to be in that room tomorrow night hates my fucking guts."
"Why don't you just leave?" Kate asked him. "It's not like you can't do better for yourself. You don't need this weed shop."
"That's not the point. I made my choices for the right reasons, and I need these guys to understand that. They think I'm weak, think I'm a snitch, and they're wrong. Making the decision to turn Joker over to you was hard. He's my father, for fuck's sake. I did it because it was the right thing to do, though. I want them to hear my side."
"Your funeral, Callaway," Kate said, as she headed toward the door to go back inside. "Thanks for your help, and we'll expect you at our offices tomorrow morning to debrief you about the Mexico trip."
"Jesus, that bitch is hard," Luke said, after she'd left.
"She made sure we came through this okay, though," I said. I knew Luke didn't like Kate, but I really believed that deep down, she was a good person.
"Well, I guess there's no reason to hang around here, is there?" Luke asked, looking a little lost.
"No," I agreed. "Probably best to make ourselves scarce and deal with the fallout tomorrow."
"They're going to understand when they hear Moses and Maria's story."<

"I know. It'll all make sense then." I put my hand in Luke's and pulled him around the side of the building so we wouldn't have to go back inside. "Take me home, sugar."
Epilogue

"Señor?"
Don Roberto lifted his head from the book he was reading and removed his reading glasses to look at the man who'd interrupted his novel. "Luis. Everything well?"
"I'm afraid not, señor. There is a problem in Colorado, with the Savage Sons."
Don Roberto's expression didn't change. "Yes?"
"Sally called a few minutes ago. It seems that Joker was arrested, as well as Tomas."
"Well, that is unfortunate news. What of the money?"
"There is no money right now. The cash and the packages were seized by the DEA."
Don Roberto thought for a moment. "I suppose we shall have to find a way to offset those losses, no? Perhaps we can find a way to hold the Sons accountable?"
"I'm sure we can do that."
"Good. Thank you for letting me know. Now my book beckons me, Luis."
"Don Roberto?"
The irritation showed ever so slightly now in the older man's voice. "What is it?"
"There's more. It seems that one of the Sons was working as an informer for the DEA. Joker's son, Luke."
"The one with the lovely young woman."
"The very same."
"Well, that is a bigger problem. We must assume that he has given them information about us, I suppose."
Luis agreed. "I think that is wise."
Don Roberto sighed and rubbed his eyes, as though he was very tired. "There is no way around it. Luis, is your passport current?"
"Si, senor."
"Take three men with you — legal passports for all of them — and go see if you can recover my money. Also make it clear that anyone who shares information about my family's business will pay a very steep price. Very steep, indeed."
"Si, señor." Luis nodded and waited to see if Don Roberto had anything further to say.
"And Luis?"
"Si?"
"Bring me Luke's woman."
