“That’s some progress,” Mike grinned. “That’s a lot of weight off of Tifton and the FBI. I think they kinda owe you.”
“I don’t know about that…”

A week after getting home, Emily limped out into the backyard, still trying to get used to the boot she had to wear after surgery. The day had dawned warm and bright, the birds chirping in her backyard through the open window in the kitchen. Emily was restless. She was used to going on walks and working out with Clarence. When she’d called him and told him about her ankle, Clarence said, “Well, there’s nothing wrong with your hands, girl. Come on in next week and we’ll get you working on the bag. Don’t need no feet for that.”
Until then there wasn’t much to do.
Emily started a pot of coffee and then heard Miner whining. He wanted to go outside and play. Limping toward the door, the tap of the plastic from the boot on the wood floor, she leaned against the frame, watching her dog run out into the backyard, where he found a frisbee and shook it as hard as he could. Carefully managing the two steps down onto the grass, Emily stepped out into the yard, waiting for Miner to bring the frisbee back. She tossed it to him a couple of times, the dog darting to chase it and then trotting back to her, dropping it at her feet. Mike would have to take him for a walk later on. Though it was nice to be outside, Emily knew Miner needed more exercise than a couple of throws of the frisbee in the backyard.
A second later, Miner stopped, barking and growling, the hair on his back standing straight up. The back gate to her yard opened and Emily looked just as Miner started to charge. “Miner! Stay!” she yelled, looking at the figure who opened the gate.
It was Cash Strickland. “Emily, we need to talk...”
