She found a place at the back of the short line and admired the glass display of cupcakes and pies.
Anthon stopped close to her right shoulder. “You can get one of those, too.”
She smiled pleasure unhidden by the barrier of jokes.
He pointed at the chalk drawings of drinks, their names and prices. “I recommend the R-and-J. It’s good for you. Good for those running legs.”
“Thanks?” How does he know I run?
“Unless those calves are from standing all day as a fake nurse.” He winked.
She looked down at the skin between her skirt and heels, still embarrassed by the unnatural apparel. Her toned calves weren’t looking too bad. “It’s probably a bit of both.”
He nodded, ordered drinks and pie from a curly redhead with blue wire glasses, and ushered Caroline to a seat at a booth near the back. There didn’t appear to be any closer open tables.
“So what else is it you do down in Edison?” he asked, taking the seat with his back to the main area.
“Manage my family’s farm.”
“Red-blooded Iowan farm girl. I like it. You like cheeseburgers?”
“Yes, please! And I don’t do everything. Most of it’s hired out.”
“Two Running J’s and a French Silk,” said a pleasant girl with drinks and Caroline’s pie in hand.
Anthon directed their order, then took off the straw wrapper and swirled the small dots of dark blue into his drink. “How did you get that?” He nodded toward her chin.
She wiped her hand across it, then realized he was referring to her scar.
Good eyes. “Just being a kid. Cut it playing in the barn.”
“So you like danger?”
Caroline choke-laughed on her drink. “I don’t know what your goal is here, but if you think you’re going to schmooze me over with lines like that, you’ve got the wrong girl.”
She hoped he didn’t.
