Forget About It

“I don’t want to get aggressive with him, Kat.” Zach looks at me like I’m an idiot. “I just need you to go order me another beer.” He takes his nearly full glass and tips it back, draining the whole thing. “I’m empty.”

“That’s pretty drastic measures just to make sure your wife doesn’t get thrown over someone else’s shoulder. Remind me not to let you drive home.” I slide off my bar stool. “You owe me, Neanderthal.”

Zach gives me a thumbs up as I weave through the crowd. Julia isn’t that far away, but it takes time to meander through all these bodies, avoiding errant elbows. I try to smile at people when I pass—no use upsetting my new neighbors. When I finally get to Julia, she’s loading up the drinks to haul them back.

“Hi,” I announce way more brightly than the situation calls for. Julia turns to look at me at the same time her new friend does. Did I say he was hot before? Because up close he is so much more than that. He’s got just a little bit of dark stubble and chocolate eyes that have me losing my train of thought. Other parts of me perk up and my brain just sits there, humming along. Julia looks at me like I have two heads and cocks one eyebrow. Right. I was on a mission.

“I’m here to tell you that Zach would like a beer and that he’s apparently unable to sit over there by himself without pining for you.” I roll my eyes and Julia laughs. She motions for the bartender and orders another beer for my stupid brother.

“Who’s your friend here?” I ask, moving my arm forward to touch the mystery man’s back. Unfortunately, that’s the exact moment one of the patrons scrambling to get their name on the karaoke list bumps me from behind. As Mr. Handsome leans back, my hand makes solid contact with the muscles on his upper arm.

And I jam my thumb into his armpit.
