“Hey,” I say after a couple of minutes.
“Hmm,” she says, looking back and up at me over her left shoulder.
I sigh, letting out a breath. “You know there’s only one teensy, weensy problem left, right?”
She shakes her head softly. “No, what’s that?”
I shrug. “Mrs. Hemmings. What the hell are we going to do about her, ‘cause I sure as hell am not letting you go.”
Adelyn smiles widely, hearing my words. “Christa? Psh. I already took care of her a week ago.”
I scrunch my brows together. “What do you mean?”
She shrugs and turns her head to face back forward in my lap. “I may have already spoken to her.”
“What?!” I ask excitedly, spinning her back around to face me.
Adelyn shrugs again with a smile. “I knew after we hooked up, there was no way I was going to be able to forget about you and us. I called her and told her straight up I loved Rick so much, but he wouldn’t want me to be suffering. He would want me to be happy.” She pauses for a second and then says, “And what makes me happy is you.” She taps my nose with her index finger and I catch it with my hand and kiss it.
I knew I loved this girl for more than just the reasons I already know.
“You’re fucking amazing, Adelyn. Do you know that?”
She laughs. “Of course I do.” After a moment, she says, “But in all seriousness, I reminded her that Rick knew you had always been in love with me and he would have wanted for you to be with me and make me happy. Then she had nothing more to say about that.”
I nod, happy as fuck. This day, this life, cannot get any better. Well, maybe it can, but right now, this is all I fucking need.
“Adelyn?”
“Yeah,” she answers.
“I fucking love you so much, baby.”
She smiles widely. “I love you, too.”
“Is there anything I can do right now to make you feel better? Maybe grab you some ice cream or brownies from the store?” I ask. I know she’s already feeling better than she was when I first walked in, but I want to see if I can top that.
Adelyn shakes her head. “No, I’ve got everything I need right here. Except there is one more thing you can do.”
“What’s that, sweetheart?”
“Take me back to my room and make me touch the stars again.”
The smile on my face cannot get any wider. Granting her wishes, I help her up, and once the two of us are standing, I lift her up into my arms, whisking her off toward the bedroom.
Everything is now complete. Everything is now the way it should be. My heart is no longer imprisoned behind steel bars. My heart is now freed because I’ve got my love, the love of my life, right by my side.
