Sometimes Dead Men DO Tell Tales!

Page 43

by David W. Smith

As the red light blinked on, Lance looked into the glass again only to see his reflection within the wet surface. The red light blinked off and the fog that had covered the glass quickly returned as the ice-cold temperature within the machine caused the moisture in the room to condensate once more. When he remembered to take a breath, it clouded in front of him as he leaned over the machine to look into the round window. Quickly wiping the glass with the sleeve of his uniform, the red light flicked on and Lance looked in. Again he saw his blurred reflection, but before the red light blinked off, Lance leaned even closer. Dust swirling in the room made Lance blink twice. It was then that Lance choked out a scream.

The image looking back through the glass window—inside the machine—didn’t blink at all. Inside the window was a man.

Lance took a flailing step backward as he forced his breathing to return to normal. In those few, still moments, a sudden calmness and awareness settled over him. He thought of Adam and Beth, the clues and the diary, the history of the man they had learned so much about—a man who had one of the most profound effects on the world of entertainment and beyond.

And now that man was only inches away.

Lance clasped his fingers behind his head and looked up at one of the remaining lit bulbs hanging above his head. He could only think of one thing:

  “Holy Crap.”

  —THE END—

  The story continues with...
