Fair Folk Foul

“If it’s any consolation,” I said, heat sparking at the top of my cheeks, “The Court of the Winter Falls has forgiven me for screwing them over. So technically, I was due to have an entire court of fairies get pissed at me.”

“Oh, they’re going to kill you,” Finn moaned, still laughing.

But he composed himself enough to take my hand again and we dashed out of the mansion together.

And sure, ok. I’d ruined one fairy court’s chances of getting a magical power-up for fourteen years, and I’d just turned the ruler of the other fairy court into a hideous vegetable, and yeah, maybe my crush had effectively crushed me, but it wasn’t all bad.

I’d gotten Becca’s head back, and I’d rescued Finn.

And no matter what the fairies tried to do to me next, between my wayward magic wand, Becca, and Finn, I knew we could handle it.

  So bring it, fairies.

I, Catherine Eloise Wadell, was ready.

  Acknowledgement

Kate Crackernuts is a delightful fairy tale which I cannot recommend enough, especially for anyone looking for a fairy tale with a weird female lead, a crazy jealous queen mother, a random sheep head, a sickly prince, and gossipy fairies.

It was my main inspiration for Book 2, and you'll find threads of it throughout this story, with Becca's sheep head, Cat's collection of nuts (acorns, in this case), and fairies who give away all the answers because they're so certain of their own superiority.

Obviously I deviated a bit from the original tale, but Cat felt like a good substitute for Kate Crackernuts, who never let anyone's opinions of her and her nut gathering get in her way.

As always, this book wouldn't have been finished if not for the patient readership of Sonia, and the support and help from Mom. A huge thank you to both of you!!<3

I also have to thank Katie, who probably knows more about this world, characters, and plotlines than I do. Thanks for listening to all my nonsense, and I hope you get the time to read my weird books some day :)

Thank you as well to all the readers who took a chance on this series! You mean the world to me already! Let me know your thoughts, I'd love to hear from ya!

  Sarah Peters

Sarah grew up reading Diana Wynne Jones, Tamora Pierce, and Patricia C. Wrede. Strong, quirky female characters (and strong, quirky female authors) have been constant inspirations throughout her life and her writing. Every day she tries to turn familiar stereotypes and tropes that are too often found in novels on their heads.

Sarah is unconvinced that magic isn't real, and will definitely fight you if you say aliens don't exist. An avid reader, learner, and writer, Sarah enjoys nothing more than curling up on her couch under 3 blankes with a cat on her lap, thinking up the next story.

After a failed 5-Year Mission to convince Mainers to say "pop" instead of "soda," she has returned to the Midwest and can currently be found comparing notes on every movie theater in the Minneapolis suburbs.

  Fair Folk

Cat Wadell swears she's just your typical high school Junior, trying to get through classes and romance and drama the same as anyone... but she's also got a problem. A fey problem.

For years the fey realm's been cut off from the human realm, and the fairies living in Butterfield aren't too pleased. Is Cat the only one who can bring magic back to the fey? Or (more likely) will she just make matters much, much worse?

  Fair Folk Fell

Catherine Wadell used to believe her best friend Jake was a fairy prince.

Granted, she was 8, and believed the world was full of magic.

Now 17, Cat is a self-identified weirdo, and Jake’s the star of Butterfield High School’s football team. Their friendship is long over, which suits both perfectly well.

Until one night changes everything. While out walking the dog Cat bumps into Jake standing alone in a ravine, fighting off a hoard of flying raccoons and an enormous owlbear.

Turns out Jake IS a fairy (albeit not a prince), and he’s not the only fey hiding in plain sight. Two warring fey courts have been battling for control of Butterfield for centuries, desperate for every last shred of magic they can get. Everywhere Cat turns, from one of her best friends, to the hot guy who falls on her during a party, she uncovers more and more fairies.

Just as Cat is starting to get the whole “fairies live among us” fact under her feet, Jake informs her that his life’s in mortal peril… and she’s the only one who can save him.

Meanwhile, she's made a promise with the alluring and fey Tobias Monday that she probably shouldn't have made, she's failing Chemistry (no thanks to her nerdy lab partner who seems to have the hots for Jake), two fairy courts are out to get her, she's been grounded for a month... and Homecoming is tomorrow!

  Fair Folk Foul

  FAIRIES LIVE AMONG US.

  And they are rude!

Cat Wadell, the self-proclaimed Hero of Butterfield, has successfully saved her ex-best friend from a horrifying fairy sacrifice. Unluckily, her fey troubles have just begun.

The Court of the Winter Falls is out to get her, and leading the charge is none other than the (annoyingly) irresistible Tobias Monday. If Cat didn’t have enough on her plate trying to stay out of trouble, she now finds herself convincing her friends that there’s really nothing going on between her and Tobias. He’s definitely just following the Winter Queen’s orders- he can’t be hanging around her so much because he’s actually interested, right??

But her friends have problems of their own. Finn’s been acting super odd since the Homecoming Dance, and after Becca gets mistaken for Cat, she finds herself dealing with an alarmingly sheepish situation.

Cat, riding on the waves of her previous heroism, gallantly approaches the Court of the Golden Sun for help, only to realize that getting tangled with both fey courts might’ve been the worst decision she could've possibly made.

Fair Folk Foul is the blissful marriage between the classic English fairy tale “Kate Crackernuts” and every high school rom-com from the past 20 years.
