Case 503

Ten minutes later my phone rang. It was Donald. He worked with us at the agency and mainly sat at a computer terminal searching through sites and pages at the request of anyone who happened to be out in the field and in need of immediate information.

‘I have a name for you. A Mr. Patrick Moody sent that message to Melissa’s account at 6.13pm the night that she went missing.’

“Fuck! Thank you, Donald. Let me know if anything else comes up.” I was sure that my suspicions about David were right. “We have to turn around, Emily. Go back to David’s house.”

“What’s happened?” she asked as she pulled the car over to the side of the road.

I looked at her from the corner of my eye. She knew that I couldn’t reveal any information just right now so she just did as I said and we headed off back to David’s house. David sat in the back, constantly throwing questions at us. We both remained silent.

When we reached his home, I asked him if his father would be there. He nodded yes. I told him to remain inside the car whilst we went inside.

I knocked on the door loudly and waited for his father to answer. When the door opened, we barged right inside.

“What’s all of this about?” he asked, trying to block us from entering his house.

“We need your laptop and any other device that you use to gain access to the internet,” Emily demanded.

“You can’t do that. Do you have a warrant?”

“It’s on its way, so you can do this now or you can do it in about thirty minutes, your choice,” I said.

“Dad, just let them have it,” David begged as he came inside.

His father looked down at the ground and sighed loudly. “It’s not what you think.”

He allowed us to open his laptop and search through his personal records and social networks. He had an obsession with Melissa. Her picture was his screensaver; he had a file filled with hundreds of shots of her. Most of them looked as though she was unaware that he was even taking them.

“I can explain,” he said quietly.

“I’m sure that you can, Mr. Moody,” I answered as I went through his web of deceit.

He had sent Melissa several messages, all involving having sex with her. The first one was dated back 4 months ago and then weekly after that, each one stating what he wanted to do to her.

“It was all a harmless fantasy. I never meant any of it,” he said shamefully.

“So then why did you send the messages?” I looked directly at him to read his face.

“I was lonely, my wife can’t give me what I need any more, and Melissa, well Melissa breezed into my life when she met my son. I became obsessed with her and the more that I thought about her, the more I wanted her.”

“You’re sick, you’re fucking sick, you filthy bastard,” David yelled out in disgust for his father.

“David, I’m sorry, but I didn’t do anything to her, I promise you.”

I read him his rights and ordered him to turn around. He was taken by surprise and tried to resist being arrested.

“You had better have a damn good reason for this,” he growled at me.

We took him to the local sheriff’s department where we could interrogate him. After hours of the same constant questions being thrown at him, he still maintained the same answers; that he didn’t act on his messages.

“Why don’t you believe me?” he argued.

  Chapter Eight

24 hours later, we had no choice but to release Patrick Moody. Without any physical evidence that he had murdered the missing girl, it was hard to prove that he had acted upon his fantasy. We kept a close watch on him, with an unmarked car outside his house, around the clock; it would prove to be hard for him to do anything without us knowing.

But it wasn’t just Patrick Moody that we were watching. His son was still on my list of suspects.

Three days had passed by without any unusual activity. The surveillance team had reported that repetitive movements had been made by the occupants. But then on the fourth day, David Moody changed the pace. He left the house, looking shifty and nervous. He walked down to the end of his street and then caught the bus. They followed it until he got off.

He made his way on foot to a salvage yard.

Jim followed closely behind him. He reported back to his team, that his target had gone over to a dark blue Ford Taurus that had been parked tightly in between two other cars.

The go ahead was given to swoop in on him. They found David Moody attempting to clean the insides of the car with a rag and a bottle of window spray. The car interior was covered in blood.

He was arrested immediately and taken to the local police station to be interrogated.

The interview was recorded and David, scared for his life, confessed to killing his girlfriend Melissa, during a violent outburst.

He had found his father’s laptop open on the day of her disappearance and was horrified to think that something sexual was going on between them. His rage grew when he discovered some very intimate pictures of his girlfriend showing her breasts and removing her underwear. He could hardly contain himself when he had arranged to meet with her after she left Lee-Anne’s house. He had waited for her to come out when he saw her car parked a little way down the street. Melissa was slightly intoxicated and happy to see him, laughing at him when he questioned her about having an affair with his father. He took her car keys from her and shoved her into the front passenger seat. He drove her to the salvage yard, a place where the owner allowed him to work on cars as practice. He wanted to be a mechanic and own his own business.

When they reached the salvage yard, Melissa made advances and hinted that she wanted to have sex with him. But he was disgusted under the illusion that she was fucking his father. He slapped her across her face. Then something snapped inside him and he began to beat her ferociously, finding it hard to stop. He saw images of her with his father, both of them naked and laughing and drinking, discussing how they were going to be together. His rage came to an end when he gave the final blow to her head with a wrench that he doesn’t even remember where he picked it up from; it just appeared in his hand. She slumped and fell silent. He panicked and tried to revive her, but it was too late, she was dead. He couldn’t leave her there for anyone to find her so he went in search for a saw. He knew that the owner had plenty of tools around and having a set of keys to the workshop, he knew that he would find one in there.

He cut her up into pieces; put them into separate garbage bags and using one of the owner’s trucks that had been parked in the yard over night, he drove to the river. He filled the bags with rocks and threw them into the flowing water thinking that they would sink and never give him away as her murderer. He went back to the yard, hung the keys back onto their allocated hook and then found an old blanket from a scrap car and covered the bloodied seats with it. He removed the plates from the car and hid them inside an old vehicle that he knew was going to be crushed the next day.

As for his father, he was sorry that he had been so obsessed with the girl. He refused to have anything to do with his son after this. It was going to be hard to explain to his wife when she asks after her son.

Melissa’s funeral was held one week later. Her parents, so distraught by her death and having trusted in David, had decided to sell their family home and move far away from the area. It was a decision that had been made heavy heartedly but they couldn’t bear to live close to the constant reminders of their daughter’s tragic final hours.

I had gone on a shopping spree with Kate. We were having a really nice time advising each other on which outfits that we should buy. I bought a plain white shirt and an expensive pair of jeans. Kate bought just about everything. She loved shopping for clothes. She bought three dresses, three pairs of sandals to match, three pairs of panties to color coordinate, god knows why, and three bras to match the panties. After that, we went and drank coffee in a small coffee house just at the end of the street. It was an old buil
ding with a lot of history, but it was the strong aroma of freshly ground coffee beans wafting around the doorway that always drew me in. Sitting opposite her and watching her laugh and smile at my unfunny jokes, I couldn’t resist asking her a question.

“Kate, would you do me the honor of becoming my wife? Marry me, Kate.”

She stopped sipping her latte, raised her eyes to look directly at mine and began to nod her head. “Yes, yes, yes,” she sang.

I leaned over the table and kissed her. I didn’t care that we had an audience, for once my private life could be on display. I don’t even know who was surprised the most by my question, Kate had no idea that I had been contemplating the thought of getting married and neither did I until the words came out of my mouth, but I was glad that they did.

We walked out in to the street holding hands, in fact, we were swinging them we were so happy. But happiness has a way of being abruptly interrupted. A scent ran under my nostrils, a scent that I hadn’t smelt for years, not since I was a child. I broke out into a sweat. My legs felt weak and began to shake uncontrollably. I had to remain calm. I looked around quickly, trying to see anyone who had just crossed my path. A man in a camel colored coat was walking away from me, a man who fitted the description of a monster from my past.

“Paige, what’s wrong, what is it, Paige?” Kate fretted.

I couldn’t answer her, my eyes began to roll back and everything turned yellow. It felt as though the air around me was swirling, making it harder for me to catch my breath. I fell to the ground with my purchases surrounding my legs.

“Paige, Paige,” Emily cried. “Help, somebody help us…”
