Thanks for picking up EXILE, my new thriller novel and the follow-up to my previous work NOMAD. It’s been great to see the enthusiasm among readers for Marc Dane’s adventures, and I’m pleased to able to bring him back for a new story. I hope you enjoyed reading thisbook as much as I enjoyed writing it!
My concept for the ‘Rubicon’ series was to write modern, tech-savvy action-adventure thrillers with the feel of the high-octane novels I lovedfrom the 80’s and 90’s, but filtered through the lens of a post-Wikileaks world, with an everyman hero facing off against deadly threats. As a character, Marc Dane grew out of a desire I had to invert a standard trope that we often see in thrillers – the “bloke in the van”, always on the side-lines while other are in the thick of the action. I wanted to explore what would happen if that character got dragged out of his comfort zone and into the middle of the danger, a hero who isn’t an elite black-ops badass, but instead someone who has to rely on wits, adaptability and resourcefulness in order to win through.
Marc’s journey through the first Rubicon novel NOMAD is a quest to clear his name, a search for vengeance on the enemies responsible for the deaths of his team and a race against time to stop a terrorist atrocity. EXILE picks up one year later, with the echoes of those events still sounding and a new threat emerging in the form of the pirate warlord Ramaas and his crusade against the West.
While EXILE concludes with Marc Dane officially becoming a part of Rubicon’s covert Special Conditions Division, in my next novel in the series, he will find himself facing off against a very different kind of enemy on a high-tech digital battlefield.
When betrayal strikes at the heart of the team, Marc uncovers the plot of a deadly cadre of black-hat mercenary hackers – to use an unstoppable virtual weapon against vulnerable civilian targets. Is their plan to spread chaos or to sell their skills to the highest bidder? Or is there a deeper, more personal agenda at work? As attacks unfold across the world – crippling power grids, crashing trains, causing riots and worse –Marc must call on all his skills and ingenuity to track down the mysterious “Madrigal” before the ruthless hacker’s plans plunge the world into war . . .
