Daniel stepped forward and turned her to face him. ‘I love you. Will you marry me?’
‘I would love to,’ Tabitha whispered through her tears. ‘And I love you too.’
Daniel swept her into his arms, and amidst a chorus of wolf-whistles, catcalls, and cheers, he kissed the woman he had loved for practically all his life, never stopped missing, and wanted to be with forever.
‘Together forever?’
‘Forever, my love,’ Tabitha whispered, with all the love in her heart shimmering in her eyes for him to see. ‘I have missed you.’
‘Thank God,’ he growled, hugging her so hard that she laughed and protested, but didn’t put too much distance between them because she knew that the only place in life where she could ever find happiness was by Daniel’s side. When he lifted his head, his words were for her ears alone. ‘I have to go after your father, if Roger hasn’t already caught him. It is going to take me away for a while, but I will return as often as I can. At least I work in the same county now, and not down in London with the main team.’
Tabitha hesitated. ‘I really do want to live at Cragmore Camden. I can afford to buy it, but it is going to cost a fortune to run.’
Daniel smiled at her. ‘I have earnt a fortune working with the Star Elite, and not spent a penny of it. Money is no object, although I am glad that you have your own fortune. You can spend your days choosing how to spend it without having to worry about where the next meal is coming from, or if the roof over your head is secure. We have enough. Now all we need is the rest of our lives to choose what we want to do, where we want to go, how many children we want to have. One thing I must warn you about, though, is that I cannot leave the Star Elite. Not now in any case.’
‘I know. Having seen the work that you do, I understand why it is essential. I know you have a good group of men, friends, beside you who will do everything to keep you safe. I have spent my entire life waiting for you to come back to me. A few more days here and there are nothing so long as you promise you will come back whenever you can.’
‘My place is beside you,’ Daniel assured her. ‘The love of my life.’
‘I do love you,’ she whispered fervently with her heart in her eyes.
‘I adore you, Miss Tabitha Lynchgate.’
‘We have been friends once before. Now I want so much more with you. Only with you. Forever.’
‘Together forever,’ she whispered.
‘Together forever,’ he promised, and it was a promise they both kept for the rest of their lives.
