His Kind Of Trouble

by Vivian Leiber

He looked out on the ballroom, watching for Tarini, who had been doing her part dancing with the representatives of every country, as well as the husband of the British ambassador. He caught sight of Vlad and smiled slyly.

Vlad was dancing a second time with Tanya. Definite protocol violation.

As Tanya’s brother-in-law, he’d have to have a talk with Vlad. He stood up and accepted a glass of champagne from the tray of a passing waiter.

Then he felt it On his wrist.

Steel clamping down with a sharp click.

“Why, Mrs. Ambassador!” he exclaimed with just the right touch of shock and outrage.

  Tarini smiled mysteriously.

“Don’t these come in handy?” she asked. “In the right situations, of course.”

With Austin sputtering that they couldn’t just leave their guests, she led him up the marble rotunda staircase to the bedroom of the private apartment on the top floor of the mission.

He looked at the sheets, rumpled from their hasty lovemaking this morning, before the ceremony. He smiled slyly as she unlocked the cuffs.

“Did I tell you today that I love you?”

“You’ve said it twelve times since midnight.”

“Maybe I should say it one more time.”

“I’d prefer to hear the words when you’re more…horizontal,” Tarini said playfully.

He laughed broadly and flung himself down on the bed beside her. He wondered how he would manage all hundred and twenty-eight buttons of the Cerutti creation. Then he remembered marriage is forever and Tarini wouldn’t be needing this dress again.

Four months later, the United Nations Mission for the Sovereignty of Byleukrainia announced the birth of Vladimir Schaskylavitch Smith. His namesake and godfather, Prime Minister Vladimir Romanov, immediately presented young Vladimir with his own castle and a crown that had graced generations of princes in the time before democratic rule.
