Jerusalem

Rannulf lifted his eyes again to the burning sky. A ruthless joy filled him. He knew himself on the verge of transformation. Like a weight of stones the burden of his life slipped from him. He had not realized before how his life bound him down. He felt light as the air, already rising.
“Bow your head,” the Kurdish lancer said.
“No.”
The sword swung.
Chapter XXXIII
In the citadel of Jerusalem, Sibylla knelt at her priedieu, and Alys came, and told her that the Templars had died at Hattin.
“All,” Sibylla said.
“Not all, my lady. The Master is said to have been spared. The King is spared, my Lady.”
“They are worthless men,” Sibylla said. “God does not want them.”
She lifted her eyes to the Crucifix. It was true, then; she had destroyed them all. Rannulf Fitzwilliam was dead, and they had lost Jerusalem. It seemed to her that her heart split in two, because no single heart could grieve for both the city lost, and the knight. She lowered her head, and submitted herself to God.
