“It’s probably a good idea for you to get away from thismess until things die down, anyway,” Mike told him. “We can handle whatevercomes up.”

It was late evening by the time everyone finally left. Whenthe house was locked up for the night and the alarm set, they tumbled intoRick’s bed, undressing each other slowly.

“I didn’t rush you, did I?” Rick asked, his lips touchinghers.

“Are you kidding? I was afraid you’d never ask.”

For once they didn’t feel frantic or pressured. Rick grabbedthe covers and tossed them to the foot of the bed, letting his eyes roam slowlyover Kelly’s body, his fingers following the path of his gaze.

There wasn’t an inch of her he didn’t touch or taste.

Never knew ankles and the backs of knees could beerogenous zones, she thought as she lay there trembling beneath his touch.

They teased each other with slow kisses and featherytouches. He gently bit the place between her neck and shoulder that he’ddiscovered drove her wild. She feathered her fingers in swirling patternsacross his groin, touching just enough to make him jerk in response. He suckedher breasts, pulling at the nipples until they were hard and swollen. Shesifted her fingers through the soft curls on his chest and rubbed his flatnipples. He placed soft kisses on the insides of her thighs and on the springyred silken curls covering her mound. She slid her fingers along his thickerection, drifting to the heavy sac beneath and cupping it in her hand.

When neither of them could stand it anymore, he rolled herto her back and slid into her with a long, smooth stroke. Then began the slowdance, the thrusting of hips, drawing it out until they were both ready toexplode. And when they did, the climax gripped and shook them like the fierceststorm, wringing everything from them before releasing them to the aftershocks.

They lay wrapped in each other’s arms, hearts thuddingagainst each other, the only sound the rasping of breath as they dragged airinto their lungs.

At last Rick kissed her but this time it was a kiss ofpromise rather than passion. And in its brightness they saw their future.

Mike flew them up to the cabin the next day, barely stayinglong enough for coffee before leaving them alone. They spent the day justletting the wind clear out their minds. Taking the steps down the face of thecliff, they walked the beach with Xena, holding hands and stopping veryfrequently to exchange heated kisses. Like kids, they took off their shoes andwaded just at the edge of the water, letting the froth of the waves kiss theirfeet. Xena played along with them, leaping in and out of the rolling surf.

Rick uncovered the outdoor grill, fired it up and grilledchicken and corn, silently thanking Mike who had grocery shopped before pickingthem up. Then they sat on the side deck in two Adirondack chairs, drinking wineand huddling under quilts as the evening chill rolled in.

And finally they built a fire in the fireplace and madeslow, delicious love in front of it as the wood snapped and popped and theflames warmed their skin.

The last thing either of them thought about was Iraq and thepast weeks.

Three days later Mike flew everyone up to the cabin and theyall drove into Bangor, where Kelly and Rick were married by the same justice ofthe peace who’d married Mia and Dan. Mike brought supplies with them and madehis mother’s famous spaghetti sauce for dinner which they washed down withcopious amounts of red wine.

Mia and Faith made plans for Kelly and Xena to spend timebeing tested.

“Aunt Vivi is anxiously waiting to talk to you,” Faith toldthem, then grinned. “And definitely meet Xena, the wonder dog.”

The next morning they were gone, leaving the honeymooners totheir solitude again.

And while the country shook its collective head over thescandal that continued to break, the new Mr. and Mrs. Latrobe sat in solitudewith Xena, at the cabin and made plans for the future.

  With Xena’s input, of course.

  About the Author

Before I retired, I spent anumber of years in fund raising and public relations at a private university.

Now I live in the Texas Hill country with my husband, asixth-generation Texan and my biggest inspiration. Our children are all grownand thankfully financially self-sufficient, so it’s just us and our threekittens on our six natural acres.

When I’m not writing, I’m reading or indulging in my othergrand passion—watching football.
