Redeeming Her Montana Love

They weren’t going to get rich but between her real estate expertise and his experience in the building trade, they’d be able to pay the bills.
She’d already told Shaw she wasn’t interested in selling the cabin at any price. From now until winter’s snow became too deep for vehicle traffic, Nate, Bruce, and she would call it home.
They’d return to it in the spring, maybe with a couple of mountain bicycles, hiking gear, and another dog packed in a SUV with both their names on the title.
Armed with cameras capable of capturing close-ups of osprey, fawns, and the other creatures they shared this area with.
Not just a cabin any more, she amended as they started down. In a matter of days it had become Nate’s and her summer home.
Home.
A place for him to grow roots.
For her, too.

“HOLD UP,” NATE whispered when they were about halfway down. “What’s Bruce looking at?”
Alerted by his quiet question, she didn’t speak as she stared into the tree shadows that had caught Bruce’s attention. Nate and she had barely spoken since turning around because they’d wanted to concentrate on the mountain’s sounds. Between the wind and birds, she’d been hard-pressed to hear anything else but that was Mount Lynx’s language. Judging by how Nate occasionally turned his head one way or the other, he was listening to what he wouldn’t have been able to if he’d been on his bike.
Judging by Bruce’s stance, whatever had caught his attention was still there. His tail was up, his head outstretched. For just a moment she’d wondered if the dog had scented a wolf, but his hackles would have been up if that was the case, either that or Bruce would have already taken off with his tail tucked between his legs.
“Deer,” Nate whispered. “To the left of the tallest seedling.”
It didn’t matter that she’d seen countless deer at Lake Serene over the years, she was thrilled.
“Why is she just standing there?” Nate asked. “She can’t be crazy about us.”
As if willing to answer Nate’s question, the doe moved from shadow to sunlight. She still had some of her dark grey winter coat and bore a scar along the side of her neck. Judging by her size, she was several years old.
“A little shop worn,” Nate whispered. “But still beautiful.”
Smiling, she looped her arm around his and leaned against his side. “Look at her middle,” she muttered.
“Her—she’s pregnant.”
Given the doe’s extended belly that was hardly an astute observation on his part. Between imagining the tiny life inside her and Nate’s distracting presence, she was hard-pressed to think of anything to say.
“It won’t be long, Mama,” she finally came up with. “Then you can put down that load.”
“And assume responsibility for a new life.”
“Or two.”
“Two.” He repeated as the doe started walking away. “Big as she is, you might be right.”
He waited until the doe was out of sight, then drew Alisha around so they were face to face. “That’s what life should be about, isn’t it?” he said. “Taking time to appreciate what really matters.”
“With someone who feels the same way.” Then their mouths met and silence again took over.
