In All Honour

‘Mmm, you smell of lavender,’ he murmured, rubbing his chin against her hair, ‘and your skin is so soft.’ He ran his fingers over the back of her neck. She gasped with pleasure and clung even closer. He grasped her by the upper arms and held her away to look at her delicately flushed face, her half-closed eyes. He smiled and put a hand into his pocket.
‘So will you marry me?’
She swallowed. ‘Greg, it is obvious what my feelings are … but James … your brother – in all honour, how can I say yes?’
His eyes glowed at her. ‘What James did does not concern you, my honourable love. My father assured me that you would accept me. How can I go back and tell him he was wrong about you?’ He went down on one knee. ‘Sarah, pray do me the honour of becoming my wife?’
She could not help the tears that suddenly ran down her face. And before she could dash them away, Greg slid an emerald ring onto her finger. He jumped up and pulled out a handkerchief to wipe her eyes.
‘Here we go again,’ he said, ‘we are always mopping each other up.’
