Tybalt Mundy and Zane Saville were thrown out of their pack after the mating party because they didn’t agree to their Alpha’s sons usurping their place there. Dorothea Chisholm takes them to the shape-shifter clinic. Dr. Oscar Thorne suggests the three of them go to Arizona to bring back a difficult old patient. Two of his rehabilitation aides found their mate at the party, and he’s short two staff members. Thea thinks it might be fun to spend more time with the me, so they set off on the road trip.

The men have a lot on their minds. They’re now homeless, unemployed, and friendless, simply for obeying the rules. Thea is furious that they, the victims, have been made to suffer. But soon they find great comfort and friendship with each other.

Until they meet up with their patient and his granddaughter and a whole passel of new problems come at them from every direction at once.

  Chapter One

Dorothea Chisholm stood in the center of the now empty foyer of the Konference Kabins conference center. She grinned at the manager and said, “Wow. I never thought it could all be dismantled and packed away so fast. You have a mighty fine staff team here. I wish every conference I organized the events for was as well managed as this place.”

“It’s been a pleasure holding the DADISP. I hope you’ll consider us for your venue again next year.”

“It’d be hard to find a better place. But it’s not my decision, of course. Who knows who they’ll ask to organize it next year. If there even is one next year.”

Dorothea felt a touch of sadness run through her. It wasn’t just the usual letdown when the adrenaline of being on call twenty-four-seven for a week of events faded. Two hundred werewolf shape-shifter bachelors desperate for a bride had been here, and not one of them made her pulse pound and her panties dampen. In the words of Ebony and Ivory Tainton’s mom, likely she was being too picky and needed to settle for Mr. Good Enough instead of continuing to look for Mr. Right. But somehow Thea wasn’t ready to take that step yet. She always knew she’d be hellishly busy this week, but she’d thought maybe a man or two might interest her enough for her to want to get to know them better.

She shrugged. Well, the week was over. The second Desperate and Dateless Interspecies Week-Long House Party was over, and no man had attracted her attention. Sometimes that was simply the way the cookie crumbled. It was time to pull up her big girl panties and get on with the job. She had a hire truck full of equipment to be returned to a bunch of different companies who’d loaned it to her for the week. It was afternoon already, and if she didn’t get everything returned today, she’d have to pay another day’s hire fee. She needed to get moving.

“Once again, thank you,” she said to the manager, then hurried out into the sunshine, wiggling her shoulders, and turning her face up to the warmth. It was already fall. It’d be winter and snowing far too soon. She might as well enjoy the good weather while it was still here.

The truck she’d hired was right out front of the building, actually on the lawn where the sports courts had been for the duration of the DADISP. Wolves tended to have a lot of energy, and with so much testosterone crammed up together, Thea had done her best to ensure that there was a good range of activities where the wolves could burn off their excess energy in socially acceptable ways. Although as the week had progressed, plenty of them had found a woman of their own and were burning up the sheets instead of the volleyball court. She giggled, remembering how both her friends Ebony and Ivory had found two men each to share her. Then she sighed. Two men sounded wonderful, but even one man would do, if only there was someone who excited her mind, her heart, and her hormones simultaneously. Oh, well, maybe next year.

She ran up to the truck and pressed the beeper to unlock the door. Then she noticed two men sitting on the grass a couple of yards away from the truck. They had several suitcases with them and it seemed to her they were hoping she’d notice them yet not quite confident enough to speak first.

She certainly knew who they were. They were the men who’d been tied up in their cabin by the sons of their pack’s Alpha. Apparent
ly he’d been more interested in marrying off his sons than in abiding by the rules of the DADISP.

What they’d done was a crime in shape-shifter law, although probably only a minor offence under American law. If they had a good lawyer, likely they could pretend it’d all been just a game gone a little wrong and they’d be let off with a fine. The shape-shifters would not forgive them so lightly however. Everyone knew how important it was that the women could trust the men they met at the mating party. There would be no future mating parties because no woman would risk coming if she thought anyone could come and look for a wife without passing the registration tests and proving they were genuinely looking for a mate, and honorable people as well.

She pointed to one with light brown hair. “Tybalt Mundy?” and then to the tall, lean blond. “Zane Saville? Why are you still here?”

“We are no longer welcome in our pack,” said Zane.

“We were hoping you could drop us off at the nearest Greyhound bus terminal, please. We were talking to one of the men here who said there’s very little unemployment in Nebraska so we thought we’d go there,” added Tybalt.

Zane stood up and bowed his head before her. Then he looked into her eyes, his own full of pain. “We wish to make contact with the werewolf packs there, but of course our own Alpha will not give us a reference. We are persona non grata now.”

Dorothea was consumed by rage. These two men had done nothing wrong. They’d sat the tests to come here appropriately. They’d passed the exams fair and square. And then their asshole of an Alpha had used them as a stepping stone for his own sons. Now Joseph and Walter would be welcomed back into their pack, while Tybalt and Zane had been kicked to the curb. Damn it was unfair.

“We know you have access to the Supreme Alpha of North America. Our problems are likely too small for him to concern himself with. He must have a lot of very important decisions to make every day. But if it would be possible for the Alpha of a Nebraska pack who will accept us to contact him to give us a reference…” Tybalt’s voice trailed off. She realized he’d misread her anger at his situation for anger at him asking her to speak to the Supreme.

Tybalt, who had stood beside Zane, dropped to the ground again, lowering his head. Zane remained standing. “I’m sorry, ma’am. We shouldn’t have bothered you with our concerns. I’ll go inside and ask one of the staff to call a taxi for us.”

Now she was confused as well as angry. “Don’t either of you have a cell phone?”

“Walter smashed them both. He didn’t want to risk us calling anyone.”

She supposed that made sense. She’d like to smash their Alpha over the head with the nearest blunt instrument to knock some sense into him. He’d willfully destroyed two men’s lives with his desire to get his sons a wife. Damn the fucking man.

“Put your luggage in the back of truck and get in. I’m on deadline. You can help me offload all this stuff and we’ll talk as we drive.”

She handed the key to Zane, who was still standing nearby then climbed up into the cab. It was a large truck, but still of the size she didn’t need a specially endorsed driver’s license for it. It was also quite full but she thought they’d be able to fit their luggage in. They each had a suitcase and a couple of duffle bags. Most people had bought quite a lot of luggage to the DADISP wanting to dress nicely for all the various events. Thea felt her temper heating up again at the thought of these two men locked in the closet instead of dancing, or at parties and talking to the woman who might have been their mate.

Then she forced herself to lay her anger aside. Getting an ulcer wasn’t going to help Zane and Tybalt. Don’t get angry, get revenge, she told herself. No, revenge wasn’t a solution either. Restoration would be better. To give them back what they’d lost. Nebraska was a hell of a long way from Ohio though, and offhand she couldn’t think of anyone she knew there, either shape-shifter or human. But maybe they needed to put several states between them and their old pack to feel safe again.

The back of the truck banged shut and the passenger door opened. Tybalt handed her the truck key and climbed in, followed by Zane who shut the door. Both men buckled their seatbelts and Dorothea started the engine.

“It’s going to take most of the rest of the day to return all this equipment to its owners and the people I’ve rented things from. Your help will be much appreciated. After that, I have to return this truck to the rental agency and collect my own car. And then I’ll take you to the shape-shifter clinic. Dr. Oscar Thorne has contacts all over the United States and he might be able to give you a reference to a pack in Nebraska or somewhere else you’d rather go.”

Thea shoved the gear stick into first and bumped the truck across the grass to the driveway. A security guard at the gate waved to her and then she was turning onto the road and heading for home. But her mind wasn’t focused on the route she needed to take. It was on the two men crammed into the cab with her.

  * * * *

Zane made sure the cab door of the truck was locked before he leaned against it, trying to give Tybalt an extra inch or two of space. He knew Tybalt was too much in awe of Dorothea Chisholm to risk his body touching hers. And fair enough, too. She’d agreed to help them although she’d looking spitting mad for a few minutes. That worried him. Had they done the wrong thing by speaking to her? But he and Tybalt had talked and talked for hours last night and been unable to think of any other way they could join a pack. No matter who recommended them to an Alpha, the first thing he’d do was contact their own Alpha. And their new Alpha was totally under the thumb of their old Alpha, Joseph and Walter’s father.

The situation was a complete and utter clusterfuck, and his and Tybalt’s lives were right in the middle of the mess. He’d spent hours and hours tied up, gagged, and locked in the closet of their cabin wishing he’d never passed the fucking tests to come to the DADISP. Yet the day they’d arrived he’d been so excited and happy at the thought of maybe meeting their mate at long last.

Once they reached the interstate Dorothea seemed to relax a little and said, “Right, now tell me, why did your Alpha allow you to take the registration tests and give you his approval if he was just going to have you tied up?”

“It’s a bit more complicated than that,” said Tybalt.

“We have almost an hour before we reach our first stop so explain it for me.”

Tybalt looked at him so he went first. “Joseph and Walter are the sons of our previous Alpha. He inherited the position from his father kind of like a king hands the kingship to his son.”

Dorothea nodded, but kept her gaze on the road.

Zane took a breath and kept talking. It seemed wrong to tell a stranger their pack’s dirty secrets but if they wanted her help they owed her at least part of the story.

“Times have changed. It’s no use saying, ‘I don’t like e-mail’ or ‘My grandfather grew corn and barley so that’s what I want to grow.’ The old Alpha liked everything the way it was and saw no reason to change. He brought his sons up believing they would become the Alphas after him.”

“In their minds, what we did was take their place. They were simply putting things right again. They never actually hurt us. They just took us out of the way,” added Tybalt.

“Joseph and Walter followed after me for a while. They were never anything other than perfectly polite. They were just persistent and believed I’d date them even though I never said I would.”

Dorothea spoke softly but quite firmly. Zane nodded. That was how they were. Blindly following the path they’d mapped out, with no allowance for other people wanting something different.

“Anyway, it became more and more obvious that if the pack was to survive, things would have to change. Our current Alpha has a degree in business management. He tested out all sorts of new techniques and said there were things the pack could do to survive. Finally the pack made the new Alpha our leader and endorsed the changes. Already, in less than a year, our income has increased. He’s the one who encouraged all the
unmarried men to sit the tests for the Interspecies House Party, but Ty and I were the only ones who passed.”

“Did you know Joseph and Walter were going to join you?”

Dorothea’s voice was even and her gaze was on the road ahead, but Zane found himself shaking his head vigorously anyway.

“No. The first thing we knew about it was at the barbecue when we both got text messages telling us to go back to our cabin. Then the old Alpha phoned me and told us Joseph and Walter were at the back fence and to let them into our cabin. We suggested that they share the passes with us, so we could all look for a mate, but they locked us up anyway. I never want to sleep on the bathroom floor again,” said Tybalt.

“Hey, at least you got to move around some. I was stuck in the closet the whole time,” complained Zane. Then he laughed. But he stopped laughing quickly as he remembered it was Dorothea Joseph and Walter had wanted and she who’d freed them from the cabin.

“Why did you come to the cabin with them that day? You said you hadn’t fallen in love with them,” he asked and then worried he’d crossed the unspoken line and asked a question that was too personal.

Tybalt shot him a worried look and he cringed. Oh shit! What if she becomes angry at us? Why did I open my big fat mouth and put my foot right in it?

“I was going to tell them to stay away from me. But they’d always been perfectly polite so I thought they deserved me telling them in privacy. As it happened, it all worked out quite well.”

“Absolutely. We’re both very grateful. We were totally over being tied up,” said Zane.
