Through Thick & Thin

“You know . . . around here, we all pray together. We’re a family so it’s rude to sit at a table with other people and pray without including them. At least that’s the rule around here. My rule. I’ll let you slide this time, but take note of that for the future,” Darren teased before saying a quick prayer himself.
“Noted.” Kensi saluted and dipped her fork into the baked potato loaded with smoked pulled chicken, shredded cheese, sour cream and a touch of butter, salt and pepper. She closed her eyes as the food melted in her mouth. She wasn’t sure if it was as great as Darren described earlier or if she was just nearly starving, but she had to admit it was delicious.
Darren watched her a moment before starting. “See, what did I tell you? It’s the bomb huh? Tell me you can get that in New York.”
“I’m not sure if I can, I just know I never have. This is so good,” Kensi answered before taking another bite.
There was not a lot of chatter between the two of them after their food had arrived. Kensi couldn’t stop eating, amazed at how tasty the baked potato was. The two of them stole a few glances at the other from time to time but didn’t say a lot. They simply enjoyed each other’s company, not wanting to leave even after dinner was over.
“I’m gonna have to make it out here at least once a week until I leave. I’m stuffed, but that was the best baked potato I’ve ever had.” Kensi patted her flat stomach.
“This isn’t the only great place around here. There is so much more to see in this quaint little town. We can go somewhere else tomorrow if you’re up to it after we get the students squared away.”
“Sounds good to me.”
Darren offered to pay for her meal but she refused. Since she was there for business, her company was taking care of it. However, she took note of him wanting to clear the tab. He was a gentleman at least, she mentally checked off the list, one reason why the town adored him.
