Sneak Peek of The Spell of Three

  Chapter One - Marilyn

I hadn’t even been in Bethel Forest for a full day, and now I was being dragged through the woods within it by some kind of werewolf shifter. And of all the irrelevant, unhelpful things for me to be thinking right now, at the top of the list was this recurring thought:

Why did none of this exciting stuff happen to me back when I used to write in my diary?

Suddenly, my days and nights spent scribbling into those old journals seemed utterly pointless. I couldn’t even remember what could have possibly happened for me to write about.

  A fight with my dad?

  Check.

Trying to find a guy exciting enough to lose my virginity to?

  Check.

  Failing miserably at that mission?

  Check.

Deciding to give it up to a douchebag?

  Check.

Finding out my aunt had died while giving birth to my niece, by way of a letter from a stranger, and running off to the woods to try to find the baby and apparently save a lot of forest-dwelling supernatural creatures who needed my help?

  Now that was something new.

I hadn’t even know to make a check box for something like that, but check!

Ditching the douchebag before letting him pop my cherry?

A new development as well, thank goodness.

Almost losing my virginity to the guy who had written the letter, only to find out he just wants to tease and train me until he feels I can successfully harness some kind of power that will fully be let out when he finally takes it from me?

That part was more fun than I thought it would be, considering I was naked and panting, begging for him to fuck me, but all he would do was make me cum over and over and over again without giving me the satisfaction of putting his cock into my wet and aching pussy.

  Oh, I almost forgot.

Finding out that a wolf, and then a man, were watching us and then being stolen by the wolf-turned-man, who was now dragging me across the fire and off to who knows where?

I can put a big check in that unexpected box, too.

Now that I had given up on writing in my diary, putting my childish ways behind me and trying to become a woman instead of a girl, my life had finally gotten exciting. I guess that’s how things always work, though.

But I wasn’t sure things were supposed to work quite this way, as I saw trees flashing by me, and birds overhead. It was getting dark again, and I peered up into the sky, not wanting to lose sight of the North Star.

I was pretty sure we were going the wrong way.

“Hey!” I yelled, to the mystery man, or mystery wolf. “Put me down!”

The only response I received was a loud growl.

It reminded me of the way the shifter, Melchior, had growled when he was ravaging me— or, much to my disappointment, almost but not quite actually ravaging me.

I had to admit that my pussy got wet again, just thinking about all the things Melchior had done to me, and all the things I still wanted him to do to me.

I was more angry than scared at that point, because I wanted to get back to what I had been doing with Melchior. And I felt that this other shifter who had taken me away from Melchior wasn’t really going to harm me, even though I didn’t know what made me think that he wouldn’t.

  It didn’t make any sense.

It was just a feeling I had.

  An intuition.

And I had been getting better at listening to those.

But as the shifter carried me deeper and deeper into the woods, and further and further away, I assumed, from Melchior and the place I was supposed to be going— not that I had any idea where that was, except that I was supposed to be following Melchior there— I did get a little worried.

“Hello?” I yelled, banging on the shifter’s shoulders.

I had seen him as both a wolf and a man. And now he was most definitely 100% man. And he was a big man, at that: tall, with a broad chest and wide shoulders.

He was handsome, which made me feel a little weird, since I didn’t exactly want to be a captive attracted to my kidnapper. But as my pussy clenched and got wetter, I couldn’t deny that I was.

Maybe it had something to do with how easily he was able to pick me up and carry me. I was a plus-sized lady, not known for being literally swept off my feet by the men I’d encountered. It felt rather liberating, even though that word is exactly the opposite of how I thought being kidnapped was supposed to feel.

“I’m up here wondering where you’re taking me…” I started to say, but I was met with a much louder growl than I had received before, and then he threw me into a tree.

When I say he threw me into a tree, I mean that he literally hoisted me up and plopped me onto a branch.

What is up with these shifters’ obsession with trees? I wondered, since Melchior had insisted I touch the tree before taking me to the canyon where he’d started his “sexual lessons” or whatever it was that he might call them.

But I didn’t say anything, because I was starting to get a little scared. This guy wasn’t exactly being nice, by forcing me up here and making me some kind of captive.

“What is going on?” I demanded, although I knew that if he was anything like Melchior, he wouldn’t tell me.

For some reason, that possibility turned me on even more, even though it shouldn’t have.

Is he anything like Melchior? I wondered.

Would he want to play with my body while teaching me the wisdom of the forest in my mind… or whatever it was that Melchior was trying to do by doing everything but having sex with me?

“Hush,” he commanded, looking up at me.

He had put me higher up in the tree than the level at which his head was standing, so I was up really high. I couldn’t even dare to try to get down, because I wasn’t exactly graceful.

Knowing my clumsy ass, I’d just fall out and hurt myself and then I’d never be able to meet my baby cousin or save this forest. I’d never even be able to figure out how I was supposed to do that.

I nodded at him, as if letting him know that I was going to obey him. It wasn’t like I had any other options available to me, anyway.

“What are you doing here?” he asked me.

I opened my mouth, and then closed it, wondering if this was a test. He had told me to hush, after all. And then he had asked me a question, which usually means one would expect a response.

He growled at me, and it was a little scary, but also a little sexy.

  “Speak!” he demanded.

“Which command am I supposed to follow?” I asked him. “The one where you told me
to hush or the one where you told me to speak?”

He furled his eyebrows at me, and I knew I was testing his patience. But I also figured he needed me too much to hurt me, or else he would have killed me by now.

I told myself not to give up anything he wanted from me, so that I could stay alive.

But I didn’t even know what he wanted from me.

  Unless…?

All guys wanted sex. Heck, all women wanted sex, too. I’d wanted it bad enough to almost do it with that asshole Charles Stubb for my very first time.

But I couldn’t do it with this shifter here. No matter how hot he was. If sex was what he wanted from me, then as soon as I gave in, he could get rid of me. “Off” me. Wasn’t that the euphemism that the mob used when they wanted to kill someone?

  He could kill me.

Before just this second, it hadn’t really hit home, how serious of a dangerous situation I might be in.

How this guy who had been a wolf might actually kill me.

I shuddered at the thought, scared now, more so than turned on. Especially since I wasn’t supposed to let myself get turned on, and I still kind of was, and that was scary, since I thought I had just figured out that that would mean I would die.

“You do as I say,” he snapped, reaching up and pinning me against the trunk of the tree behind me.

  I gulped, my heart racing.

  “Okay,” I agreed.

His hand was huge. And his tone of voice sounded like he meant what he said.

“Tell me what you’re doing here,” he said.

  “I don’t know,” I told him, honestly.

“Did Melchior ask you to come?”

  I nodded.

I didn’t know if I was betraying Melchior by doing so. But I had no other way to explain my presence in the forest.

“Are you the One True Hope?” he asked.

I had no idea what that was, but speaking of hope, there was the look of it in his eyes as he asked me the question. I didn’t want to let him down, despite the fact that he had rudely run off with me while I was in the middle of almost having sex.

I decided to go with my instinct and answer him as honestly as I could.

“I think I’m here to meet the One True Hope.”

I had no idea why I said that. The words just fell out of my mouth. I guess I had high hopes for this newborn cousin of mine.

All I knew was that as soon as I read in Melchior’s letter that everyone needed me to come here to Bethel Forest, I had an odd feeling that I wasn’t the one who was going to save anybody.

I didn’t know why Melchior even thought that, and if it was anything like the whole ordeal with the orb, I was skeptical about whether he even knew why he thought that.

I was just Marilyn Forester. Not any kind of hero or savior.

“Why did you leave Bethel Forest?” the shifter asked me next.

  I shrugged.

“I really have no clue. I was like, a baby, or something, at the time,” I told him.

He looked surprised when I said this.

He peered closer at me, as if to try to figure out if I was hiding something from him.

“You really don’t remember anything?” he asked me. “No joke?”

“Really. No joke. I don’t know what you’ve heard, dude, and I honestly don’t even know how old I was, since no one thinks I deserve to know these things, but it was young enough that it must have been before I developed the capacity to retain memories, because there’s nothing there in that part of my mind.”

  He sighed.

  He looked confused.

  And disappointed.

Once again, I found myself sorry to be the cause of his disappointment, even though I knew that made no sense. I was the one who should be disappointed, or upset, or stark raving mad, that he was keeping me in this tree without telling me why, but instead demanding answers from me when I didn’t even know anything at all.

“What did Melchior tell you?” he asked me.

“Not much,” I said, which was also the truth.

And it wasn’t for lack of trying to find out, on my part, I wanted to add, but didn’t.

I wasn’t sure what I was supposed to say so I was trying to say as little as possible, which wasn’t hard, since I really didn’t know much.

“Did he have an orb?” he asked me.

I shrugged, then shook my head, but then I realized that something in my eyes must have given away the fact that he had.

“Touch this,” the shifter said, taking my hand and placing it on a branch.

I’ve done this before, only to find out it doesn’t work all that well, I wanted to tell him.

But maybe I wasn’t supposed to talk about that part, so I didn’t. I played dumb, grasping the tree branch and looking at him as his hand was on mine.

It was so similar to what had gone down between Melchior and me on the other side of the forest that I couldn’t help but be turned on. And intrigued.

What is it with these shifters wanting me to rub their wood, but not just in the way one would expect?

I tried not to grin or chuckle at this thought as I rubbed the branch with him, acting naïve. He was watching me closely, as if looking for any sign of knowledge on my face. And then he was also looking at the branch.

  A strange thing happened then.

A pear fell out of the tree, but it hadn’t been attached to that branch. I wasn’t sure where it had come from, although it seemed to have come from the branch.

It was almost like it had appeared out of thin air, even though I was in a pear tree so you would expect a pear to be here, but not exactly here, here, if that makes any sense. Which I know it doesn’t.

“Here you go,” the shifter said, handing me the pear. “You must be hungry.”

I was famished, but food hadn’t been the main thing on my mind.

I saw a bird above the shifter’s head, and it was white. I thought I was seeing things, because partridges were brown, not white, and all the birds I had seen here in Bethel Forest so far had been partridges.

“That’s my dove,” the shifter said, as if it was the most natural thing in the world.

Oh yeah, your dove. Everyone has one of those, I wanted to say.

He nodded at the dove and it flew off, but not very far. It remained pretty close to him, in the air above his head, as though that was where it liked to hang out.

Had that dove plucked the pear from a higher branch for me?

This was some crazy stuff. I began to wonder if the tree emitted some kind of drug when I rubbed it, causing me to confuse reality with fantasy.

“Are the pears in this tree, um, safe to eat?” I asked the shifter, not wanting to offend him after he’d offered me food, but also wanting to double check about the safety of said food first.

Maybe it was all the pears I was eating. Perhaps they were poisonous and somehow released the drug that made me feel crazy.

“Oh yes, they’re perfectly safe,” he said, not seeming offended at all. “It’s the apple trees you need to be wary of. Some of them are poisoned and others will just turn you evil.”

  “Turn me evil?” I asked.

“Well, it depends,” he said, looking closer at me. “Basically, they’ll give you knowledge. And if you’re evil, you’ll gain knowledge of that fact, and be able to use it more.”

“And if I’m not evil?” I asked him.

“Well, that’s where it could be good,” he said. “Because then you could harness the power of your goodness. But it’s a big risk to take. And either way, it draws the attention of… people here that you don’t really want to draw the attention of. So, most of us avoid it, because most people are evil, so the odds are high that it won’t be worth the risk.”

“I see,” I said, although I really didn’t. “Thanks for that FYI.”

I took a big bite of the pear, even though I didn’t feel completely confident that it was safe to eat. But I was starving and figured that if my options were
between eating a poisonous pear and dying, or not eating anything and starving to death, well, at least I’d go out with a full belly.

And I had much bigger ways to die to worry about.

Starting, for instance, with the fact that I was still very much aware of the fact that this werewolf, even though he was currently feeding me, could kill me.

  Chapter Two - Marilyn

  I didn’t die, thank goodness.

The pear was good – very juicy.

“This is kind of working,” the shifter said, as he peered up at the branch I had been touching. “But not as well as I would have thought.”

I could have told you that, is what I thought.

He looked up above me and said, “A lot of partridges have gathered here, since you’ve been in this tree.”

“So?” I asked him. “Isn’t that what these partridges seem to do around here?”

“Not this much,” he said. “Not anymore.”

Well, at least he had half answered that question, but in a very cryptic way.

It was almost the same as if he hadn’t answered it at all.

“So, how long are you going to leave me up here in this tree?” I asked him. “And what for, exactly?”

He looked at me, but that was it.

“Well, if you’re not going to answer that question, will you at least tell me your name?” I demanded.

  This made him blink.

He must not have been expecting it.

His normal captives were probably smart enough to shut up and let him do the talking. I was the only dummy asking questions and demanding things of my captor.

“Only if you tell me yours,” he finally said.

“Fine. It’s Marilyn,” I said, thinking that this was an easy one, since I was pretty sure he already knew my name.

  “Marilyn.”

At this, he reached up and touched my face, much like he had been touching the branch: carefully, delicately, which was rather ironic, since he had such big hands – big everything – and had just been carrying me through the forest against my will. Now, though, it was as if he was being as gentle with me as he could.

“So, it’s really you,” he said, pushing some of the hair back out of my eyes. “You’ve come back to help them.”
