“Oh, I think I could cash it. I might not be able to walk, but I can cash it.” We both chuckled as I continued soaping him up. He stepped under the cool spray and rinsed away the soap—the sight of him, the water running down his magnificent body, got me going all over again. Yes, I could cash any check I wrote—and not being able to walk would be a small price to pay.

He wiped water from his eyes and looked down at me. “Okay. I’ll stay, too.”

I leaned against the tile wall. “What?”

“I’ll stay here. Granted, I might have to travel a lot—whenever we have a job, you know—but we’re isolated enough that I don’t think it’ll be dangerous. I don’t think Mary will disagree, but I’ll talk it over with her and the rest of the guys. I’ll make them see this is for the best.”

“You’re serious.” It was a statement, not a question. I had never imagined him making such a huge decision. Not for me. He might almost die for me, but I didn’t expect him to go against his family.

“Dead serious. We’ll make it work. I’ll do whatever I have to do for this.” His hands rested on my hips—gently, not sexually—and he pulled me closer. “You’re worth everything. You’re worth more to me than my life.” He pressed his lips to my forehead, and I closed my eyes and wondered what I ever did to earn a love like ours.

I leaned against his unyielding chest. “I love you so much.”

  “Forever?” he asked.

I didn’t have to think it over. “Forever and always.”
