“Sorry you have to do that,” Tang whispered.
“Tim…just, how’s Milt?”
“They’re gonna transfer him to a nursin’ home on Tuesday.”
“I know you didn’t—”
“Reap what you sow, Rook.”
Very true. They were getting the best ending they could out of this. Regardless, Haley was going to have a hard time doing this again, trusting again. At least her love of the job hadn’t been diminished. That gave her something to work with. “You’ll call me as soon as you find out about the plea?”
“Yeah.” His words trembled.
“I’m gonna come visit. You know that, right?”
“I know.” Tang cleared his throat. “Look, I gotta go.”
“Okay.” Haley let him have whatever dignity he had left.
The door opened. Several people stepped out, and Tonya was behind them. Haley walked toward her. “I was just comin’ back.”
“Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I think so.”
Tonya gazed at her a little longer.
“Promise. Now let’s go see if they can hang on to this lead.”
Tonya smiled. “Okay, but I have a football question. I think I get the offense and defense thing, but what is that bright yellow line that shows up?”
“Yellow line?”
“Yes, how do they draw it across that entire field so fast? Or is it some kind of projection?”
Haley stopped and stared. “You’re…kiddin’, right?”
Tonya stared right back.
Haley threw her head back and laughed. “It’s just…just somethin’ they do for TV, to show where the first down is.” The disgruntled look on Tonya’s face made her laugh even harder. Haley was starting to feel weak. She pulled Tonya to her and managed to contain herself, barely. “Uh, I love you, but I’m gonna have to tell everybody you said that.”
Tonya pushed her away and glared, but there was a playful glint in her eyes.
“Just Nate, then?”
Tonya stepped away and opened the door. She didn’t bother to check if Haley was behind her.
Haley grinned and followed.

Andrea Bramhall
