Artefact 299: Accounts of the Zombie Apocalypse Page 11

by Binley, L. A.

This trial resulted in mass homicide, by those afflicted and by those who had not been. The survivors from this experiment are likely to have lasting trauma from the six-month long event. The level of hysteria and panic was ignored by both parties involved, and it was not until contamination spread beyond the national borders that an intervention was made. Due to the secrecy of this experiment, there were no warnings in place to stop people from entering the country. Although air travel was stopped, some were able to land, and contact was made via a fishing boat landing. All ports were sealed once this was revealed.

Once world leaders were able to establish the framework of isolation, the contamination was stopped from reaching all areas of the globe. The investigation can conclude all traces of this contaminant spread have now been stopped with no new global cases reported over the past four years.

The investigation was concluded five years after the start of this epidemic, and four and half years after the United Nations stepped in to resolve the issue. The United Kingdom has remained closed off from the rest of the world during this time. In part, this has been for the safety of the global citizens as well as to observe for any further mutations. At the writing of this report, no further mutations have been identified.

The ingredients, and process needed, to produce this cure was obtained from BioGen Labs Inc as part of the ongoing investigation and asset seizure. Once batches of the cure were created, armed response teams were landed within the country to distribute to any remaining survivors. Periodic food drop offs have since been made to ensure survival for those left on the island.

  Acknowledgments

I almost feel as though this is an award speech. I want to thank my mum for telling me when my writing was boring and pushing me to improve. I’ve limited my usage of ‘overly’ in this book. I want to thank my friends for having confidence in me and cheering me on. You might not realise it, but those kind words helped me push through. Thanks to Xee and Cat for helping me decide on the final title. I don’t know if I would have been able to decide on my own. Lastly, I want to thank Todd. Without your love of apocalypse fiction, and zombies, I might never have decided to write this. Also, without your prodding this may have stayed a book in progress, never ready to see the world.
