[1] Quetzalcoatl is the “Feathered Serpent” god of South America, while the Thunderbird is a mythical creature of North America, but the Parrots see them as different aspects of the same cosmic principle.
[2] All Parrots have four toes, two facing forward, two backward. Not only will Parrots instinctively grasp any object coming into contact with their feet, even when they are asleep, their feet are as dexterous as any hand, able to hold food to be eaten or even use simple tools.
[3] At this time, the companion population was less than a thousand (though it would expand due to the establishment of industries such as the Hercules Gunpowder Company, which opened the same year the Parrots came), but by the time our story takes place, the population has risen to 253,000, and the vegetable fields and citrus orchards which first delighted Christobal and the other exiled Parrots have all but vanished. Even so, the Parrots continued to dwell here, for they, for they, like everyone else, found it easier to stay where they were, even though the land was not ideal and they still dreamed of home.
[4] The story of Allie and Mickey O’Possum can be found Paws & Claws: A Three Dog Mystery, first volume in this series.
[5] After the destruction of the Feral Gang’s lair, the City finally bulldozed the site.
[6] Sagittal crest.
[7] A Tabby with Tortoiseshell coloring along with the standard gray and white.
[8] Actually, there were three Calico cats born outside; the third, nicknamed Dum-Dum, relocated to Juneau, Alaska, with the Coast Guard, then later moved to Galveston, Texas.
[9] For the full story of what happened in the salt marshes along F Street on the previous Halloween, read “The Dog Who Loved Sherlock Holmes,” one of the tales included in Sherlock Holmes: The Coils of Time & Other Stories.
[10] An “Unkindness” is the term used for a group of Ravens, just as “pack” is used for dogs, and “glower” or “clowder” used for cats.
