  Chapter One

Kimberly Matherson had not been looking forward to freshman orientation for reasons that would not come as a surprise to anyone who knew her. This meant that nobody in her freshman hall group, other than Tashia Jennings, understood why she was on her phone in the SUV headed from the Washington College Seattle, known as WCS for short. Meanwhile, the girls that were sitting in the front two rows of seats were giggling, because this was the highlight of their freshman orientation.

Freshman orientation at WCS was simple. Freshman dorms were mostly single-sex, but co-ed options were available for people that had specifically asked for them, and most sophomores, juniors, and seniors went co-ed. Freshmen arrived a week before most other students, except the juniors and the seniors that acted as hall group guides and resident advisors. The guides led the freshmen in trust building exercises that were meant to build camaraderie. Orientation week was supposed to end with a bang, with each group doing a special activity of their choice, with classes starting the next day, a Monday.

They had built camaraderie, alright. One group of girls ended up becoming close friends, and two girls were left out, the only girls that happened to be curvy, Kimberly and Tashia. That’s why those two were stuck in the back of the SUV while the rest of the gals were split up among the caravan of three SUVs in the seats of their choice.

“Kim, you have to admit you’re a little excited for tonight,” said Tashia.

“Tashia, don’t tell me they got to you too,” said Kim. “Male strippers? Really? How on earth is that gonna be fun?”

“Kim, you’re not from around here, are you?” asked Tashia.

“No, I’m from Kansas,” said Kim. “But you’re from around here…so I guess I should trust your judgement. Are Seattle strip clubs really different?”

“Not all of them,” said Tashia. “Lots of them have acts where the guys make you laugh rather than make you horny.” Tashia and Kim could talk frankly about sex which is part of why they got along. While the girls in their group giggled and laughed like middle schoolers when sex scenes came on in a rom-com they were all supposed to sit and watch as a ‘bonding’ experience, Tashia and Kim had shot each other knowing glances reading, “Can you frikkin’ believe these girls?”

“So what makes…what’s it called, Wolf Butts, different?” asked Kim.

“Bear Buns,” corrected Tashia. “It’s an all-shifter strip club, featuring all male strippers who can also turn into big, badass predators. The most special part of the club? The Twelve Dancing Bears.”

“The Twelve Dancing Bears?” asked Kim, unable to help herself from laughing. “What the heck is that? Some play on ‘The Twelve Dancing Princesses’?”

“Exactly,” said Tashia. “And like those princesses? These bears…are looking for true love.”

“So let me get this straight…there are twelve bears?” asked Kim.

“Not just twelve bears…six sets of two,” explained Tashia. “Each set is a different bear species. They travel the world looking for fated mates, one woman that each set of two bears can, well, share!”

“Seriously? All twelve bears want to share a woman…with another man?” asked Kim.

“That’s right, from the mysterious black bears to the icy cool polars and the cuddly grizzlies,” said Tashia. “They find replacements of their same species to fill the void after they find their fated mates, so the ones we’ll see tonight are new to the show. The ones who have been with the show the longest? A set of Australian koala shifters, two panda bear shifters, and the show’s newest starts…the cinnamon bears.”

“Okay, I’ve gotta ask, how do you know so much about this?” asked Kim.

“Trust me, they’re the hottest guys in Seattle, of course I know who they are,” said Tashia. “I’ve dated more than my share of shifters since turning eighteen this spring…and that means learning about shifter culture, especially the downright sexy parts.”

The car came to a halt. They made their way out of the car. The guide gave each of them their tickets and the gaggle of giggling girls walked ahead of Kim and Tashia.

The exterior of Bear Buns was brightly lit and had a large marquee sign reading ‘THE TWELVE DANCING BEARS, FT. JACE AND GABE’. There were six posters along the exterior of the venue, which Kim and Tashia took the time to look over.

Each poster was absolutely frikkin’ gorgeous. It featured a given bear’s species name, with the shift shown below, and above? Two hot, sexy, shirtless guys, their mate marks (the special marks that told them who they were meant to be with) removed with photo editing software so as not to spoil the surprise.

The koala poster had red, white, and blue details. The pandas? Red and gold, very auspicious. But the poster that Kim liked most? The bright purple poster with gold details, reading, ‘Cinnamon Bear Buns’, featuring two cinnamon-gold colored bears and two handsome shirtless men, whose faces were hidden from view.

“Ooh, you like’m spicy, don’tcha?” asked Tashia.

“Definitely,” said Kim. “These guys…they’re really something. I’ve never seen bodies like that before.”

“You’re lucky I have a thing for lions, or I’d be fighting with you over those two smoking hot bears,” said Tashia. “Who knows, Kim. I know this week has sucked, but tonight? It just might be your lucky night, especially given that you’re a virgin.”

Kim had to stop herself from laughing.

“Really? Me, a virgin?” asked Kim, motioning to her curves. “Tell me how on earth you think that someone with all this junk in the trunk is a virgin.”

“Girl, I know you’ve been around the block a few times,” said Tashia. “Unlike half the girls in our group. Virgin
here means somebody who’s never seen the show.”

“Are you telling me…you’ve seen the show before?” asked Kim.

“That’s right, which is why I have the connect with somebody inside,” said Tashia.

“Let me guess, a lion shifter,” said Kim.

“Naturally,” said Tashia. “Which means that you and I should get the royal treatment, even if we don’t drink.”

“Are you saying…we should split from the group?” asked Kim.

“Should we? We’re going to, no question,” said Tashia. “You really wanna hang out with that gaggle of goofy bitches all night? Heck no. Listen. You’ve got that ride sharing app on your phone, so do I, and we have each other’s numbers. I’m not your mama, but, let me know if you end up wanting to…hook up, while you’re here, so I know you’re alright.”

“Hook up? Here?” asked Kim. “I do have some standards.”

“Trust me, if one of these pairs of bears picks you to go back to their cocktail room…get ready for something spicy to happen,” said Tashia. “These cocktail rooms, they’re like champagne rooms on steroids. They’re like luxury hotel suites mixed with a nightclub lounge.”

“And you know this because…” started Kim.

“Because I may have made out with my lion in one of those rooms last time,” said Tashia. “Do the details really matter?”

“Definitely not,” said Kim. She checked her phone. “Oh, shizz. It’s nearly time for the show to start. Come on!”

Kim and Tashia entered Bear Buns and didn’t even have time to browse the gift shop, heading straight for the show, where a handsome lion shifter was leaning against the side of the entrance to the performance hall. Kim could tell he was a lion shifter because he had the best damn hair in the building, as well as the usual tell: a large breastplate tattoo that extended from his chest out to his shoulders and down his upper arms. Each species of shifter tended to have a mate mark in a certain location, and the most common location for lion shifter tats? All along the shoulders, top of the chest, down the arms, and slightly onto the back, like a mantle.

  “Tashia?” said the lion shifter.

“David! Hey,” said Tashia, going in to give the guy a quick peck on the cheek. “This is my friend Kim. We’ve had a bad week, so please tell me you managed to swing something special for us so we don’t have to sit with our dorm mates?”

“Oh, trust me, I got you the best seats in the house,” said David. “Come on, follow me.”

David took Tashia by the hand and Tashia took Kim by the hand. As they walked through the crowded dance hall, Kim noticed that the decor really was, well, classy! She’d been expecting a dark, seedy joint, but instead, she found a large, warm, inviting area that reminded her of a classy hotel lobby.

David led Tashia up a small flight of stairs into the VIP section, which had a special bar and a bouncer who let the curvy gals in once he saw they were with David.

“Woah, VIP?” said Tashia. “I was just expecting a plate of free oysters or something!”

“Trust me, Bear Buns loves its staff as much as we love it, and what you put in, you get out…so it wasn’t any trouble at all for me to ask the managers to let me give you two a table,” said David. “Now, Kim, was it?”

“That’s right,” said Kim, shaking David’s hand. His hand had large rough spots, one spot below each finger (but not his thumbs) and one in the center of his palm, just like a lion’s paw.

“Kim, do me a favor…and make sure Tashia doesn’t fall too hard for any of the bears,” said David with a wink. “Can’t let her have too much fun tonight!”

“Ugh, David, you’re such a tease,” said Tashia, pulling him down to give him a kiss on the cheek. “Trust me…you’re the only shifter I want…tonight, at least!”

David let out a roar that shocked Kim who had never heard a lion shifter roar before! Tashia was giggling her butt off.

“Well, as fun as this is…I’ve got to go help set up,” said David, with a twinkle in his eye. David headed back out of the VIP area, and towards the backstage area.

“I like him,” said Kim, sitting down in the booth. The VIP booth that David had booked them had a pole on the mirrored table, the table nestled in a semicircle shaped couch-style booth, made of white tufted leather. “You have good taste, Tashia.”

“Trust me, you’ve met the guys at our school,” said Tashia. “Scrawny. Wimpy. Full of bullshizz. Looking to be players when they can’t even handle one lady. There was no frikkin’ way that I was gonna settle for one of them..when I could get someone who’s more man than they’ll ever be.”

“I guess I’m starting to see the appeal of shifters,” said Kim. “They didn’t have many in my town, but they seem to be all over the PNW. I better find one of my own soon.”

The lights flickered and a DJ’s smooth voice, as silky and rich as fine chocolate, came out of the PA system.

“Hello, ladies…and welcome to Bear Buns,” said the DJ. “Before we start the show, just remember…this is the one strip club in the world where it’s okay to fall in love. Even if you don’t fall in love tonight, make some memories, and most importantly, have fun! So gird your loins and grab your coins, because tonight, you’ve got a real special treat. Jace and Gabe, the two cinnamon bears whose spicy bodies y’all can’t get enough of, have a brand new routine ready for you all…and I sure hope you have a sweet tooth.”

The lights went out, then, after a few seconds, the lights were back on, but they were flickering on and off quickly. They were strobe lights. Kim could make out forms coming through the hall, large, tall forms with big muscles, wearing black pants, shoes, and belts, with white shirts, and black vests and bowties.

  The lights came on.

In the hall were some of the handsomest men that Kim had ever seen, all shifters, wearing waiter’s outfits, and carrying, on large ornate golden trays…cinnamon buns.

“Holy heck, is this for real?” asked Kim.

“Does that smell like it’s fake?” said Tashia.

Kim sniffed. The room smelled of spicy, delicious, freshly baked cinnamon rolls…and coming up the stairs into the VIP area was a pair of waiters with two platters loaded with them.

The ladies in the VIP area were going nuts over the cinnamon rolls and everyone took at least one cinnamon roll off of the men’s platters. The men made their way over to Kim and Tashia’s table.

“Ladies…you two look like you’re ready to have dessert,” said the first waiter, who had deep brown eyes that reminded Kim of melted chocolate. His hair was a warm shade of red that was nearly blonde, which looked, weirdly enough, cozy. His shoulder muscles were practically tearing apart his shirt, which was basically painted on.

“Oh, we definitely are,” said Tashia. Tashia took one of the plated cinnamon rolls off the shifter’s tray.

“Trust me…there’s another sweet treat I’m sure you’d be interested in,” said the second waiter, making eye contact with Kim. His eyes were a warm brown that looked like amber. His hair was more brown than the first shifter’s. “And I know that you must be a virgin, because there’s no frikkin’ way I’d forget that face…or those curves.”

“Me?” asked Kim. “Are you talking…to me?”

This wasn’t like Kim at all. She was usually self-assured, sarcastic, and sassy, with a comeback for anyone that showed interest to her, but these two? She couldn’t stop herself from stammering and staring. They looked like they were the two most important people in the room to her, even though she’d only just met them…and she could tell by the way that they were looking at her that they felt this connection as well. She knew she had the body and curves to seduce any man, but, these weren’t just ordinary men. These were shifters, and shifters took chemistry seriously.

“Yes, you,” said the first man. “The name’s Jace.”

Jace looked over the curvy girl. He’d seen her from across the room when he’d come out with the pastries, because David had given him and Gabe the heads
up that there was a very special girl there, hanging with his special girl…but Jace had heard that all before. He’d never actually felt something this strong before.

Gabe felt it too. Who was this girl? Why was she looking them in the eyes, and not just eating them up with her eyes? And why was he unable to take his eyes off of her face, even though he wanted to eat her curves up like groceries? There could only be one explanation…and that meant that this night had to really mean something, that he and Jace? They had to put on their A game.

“Gabe,” said the second man. “And I have a feeling you’re going to get to know us…very, very intimately.”

“Oh really?” asked Kim, a smile making its way across her face before she could catch it and throw it back in the box of buried feelings where it belonged. “And what makes you say that?”

“The fact that you haven’t touched your cinnamon bun, but you’re hungry for something delicious,” said Jace.

“The good thing is…that’s exactly what we have on the menu for you, and only you, tonight,” said Gabe.

“I’m sure you tell all the girls that,” said Kim, forcing herself to take a bite of her cinnamon bun, not so that she could try the delicious treat, but so that she could have her mouth full and stop herself from saying things. Why wasn’t she able to control her mouth? She usually had some retort when a guy said something about her appearance, but…with these two? Something else was doing the talking, and it wasn’t her brain…

  “Definitely not,” said Jace.

Gabe looked to Jace and then to Kim. “He’s not lying, and trust me, I’d tell you if he was…because I have half a mind to claim you for myself.”

To…claim her? Were they implying what Kim thought they were implying? There was no time to ask, because the DJ started playing the first song on the set list, and all heck broke loose.
