“Ritchie, go get the money.”

He nods and shoots off; he knows time is an issue. I can only be around Glen so long before I’ll beat the ever-living shit out of him.

Glen smirks and my teeth crunch hard together. Lex stays crouched down, wiping his bleeding nose with his sleeve. I’ll sort him out the moment we get rid of this scumbag.

Ritchie returns and places the envelope in my hand. We always have money on hand in the safe. I hate paying off scumbags, but if it keeps these leeches away then it’s a necessity.

“No need to count, I think you’ll find it’s all there,” I add dryly.

“No, it’s okay. I think we can trust you.” He grins, placing it in his pocket. “You know, we should do more business together. I know you act like you’re playing straight, but we all know how you got your money starting out.”

“Hell would freeze over before I had any involvement with Weighman. My businesses are straight down the line, you can check my books if you like, and they’ll stay that way. Now, fuck off before I decide I’m not in such a forgiving mood.”

“Okay, okay, I’m going.” He scuttles away like the complete rat he is.

I hold out a hand to Lex, who stares at it then drops his eyes down to the floor.

  I guess he’s pissed.

“Look, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have turned you away.”

“Don’t apologise, I’m used to it. The old man kicked me out, too, but I’ll pay you back the money, though.”

I scowl at his tone. “If it means you fucking gambling again then don’t bother. Now, come on. I’ll get Jo, our first-aider, to look at your nose.”

“I don’t need your charity,” he bites out, still avoiding my eyes.

I grab the front of his shirt and pull him up so we’re eye to eye. He’s around about the same height, something else we have in common.

“It’s not fucking charity, we’re family. I’m sorry I dismissed you when you needed help, but I’m here now, and you’re coming home with me.”

“What? Really?” he asks, looking taken by surprise. Jesus, this kid is in need of a real family.

“Yeah, really. Wait till you meet Luce and Gracie. You like Peppa Pig, right?” I add with a smirk.

  “Peppa Pig?” he replies, confused.

“Trust me, you’re about to find out. Now, come on, let’s get you cleaned up first.” I slap his back, walking him back inside.

  A brother. Who’d have known?

  Welcome to the fucking family.
