  CHAPTER 1

  WILLIAM JOSEPH GEO TRAVIS

  Welcome!

A big signboard stretched across the road greets the black SUV that passed by. It has been already the third welcome sign that they passed by through several towns with their welcome sign at the start and a thank you sign at the end. It"s usually a perfect sunny day fit for a trip to the mountains but today a heavy rain covers the sky in darkness.

“This is fairly unusual, it should have been a sunny day according to the weather report yesterday,” Mr. Travis said.

“I told you dad we should have gone to the beach” William said at the back of the car, dressed in an orange Hawaiian shirt and red board shorts.

“We"ve been through this William, yes you want to go to the beach but we"ve prepared for this trip since last year, and we can"t just cancel it,” Mrs. Travis said in the passenger seat as she glanced at William.

“Yes! I understand, the reservations and everything,” William said looking at the window.

He finds it hard to argue with his parents. After all, they"re both professors at their state university. Dr. Peter Travis teaches Anthropology while Dr. Sarah Travis teaches Linguistics.

It"s especially hard to argue with the sweet beautiful voice of his mom. His dad would often tell him the story of how they first met, when he asked her for help in translating some of the runes they found on an old archaeological site in Asia. One consultation led to another and with the beauty of his mom and her sweet voice - his dad was captivated forever.

“Don"t worry you"ll enjoy this trip it"s not the usual ones we"ve had before that I can assure you,” Peter said as he adjusted his glasses.

“How can you see through all that rain?” William asked.

“The wipers give me a brief picture of the road from time to time,” Peter replied as he overtakes another car.

Somehow William feels his dad is lying. Mr. Travis was good at hiding things. Back home they would often play „find that thing." His dad would hide his gifts for the holidays and even on his birthday and he would go looking for them while solving the clues and puzzles. Most of the time he would find it buried at some specific location in their backyard or at their garden and sometimes it would just be hidden in his room among most of his things, in which the cleaning of his room would be next.

He really like this modern day Indiana Jones-Tomb Raider adventures at home. But his dad never hid something important from them. Although, his dad would often say that the details of finding out something is more important than just having what you"re looking for easily. William never got the idea but he loves looking for his presents and solving the puzzles. He thought receiving your gifts in a regular manner might be a bit boring for him somehow.

“Would Uncle John be there?” He asked.

“No dear, your uncle is busy as of the moment and has some pressing matters to attend to,” Sarah replied.

The last time they went to this cabin deep in the mountains is still fresh in his mind. He was seven at that time and the first time he met his uncle John. Unlike his father whose medium built like a swimmer, his uncle was like a pro wrestler. He was so big he can carry William with one hand and throw him to the river to learn how to swim. He did learn to swim after drinking a lot of water and he felt the reason he was floating was because of the volume of water in his belly already. But he grew to love the water. His mother was a graceful swimmer after all, like a swan floating in a lake, while his father is a long distance swimmer who joins some triathlon competitions sometimes.

“Don"t worry William, you"ll enjoy this vacation,” Sarah said smiling at William.

“Who could resist my mom?” William said to himself.

Sarah Travis after all was one of the most beautiful women in their town. She is famous for her blue eyes that seem to captivate anyone who sees them. She also has her slim figure that does not seem to change as she ages. She"s good at ice skating too besides swimming.

Peter Travis on the other hand has emerald green eyes that seem to hide infinite wisdom. He is fully respected in their town as one of the most brilliant professors in their college. He has found several relics and archaeological sites and translated a lot of historical texts that made their university famous. He is also one of the best football coach their university ever had winning back to back titles just recently.

On the other hand, William wears a brown contact lens at all times because he inherited both his parent"s eye. His left eye is green just like his dad and the right is blue just like his mom.

„Think about bad luck," William would often say whenever people ask why he is not like his parents.

When he was young people would be amazed at his unusual eye color. He would often be teased a cat since the only beings he knew that existed with such rare eye colors are cats.

They had this cat when he was three that gave birth to a kitten with the same color as his eyes. The kitten was pure white despite the mother and father being orange in color. The kitten did not live long and it died after just several months. He lost immediately the only friend he feels that shares the same fate as he does.

  His pa
rents would often say that he inherited both their gifts, a fact that he still needs to see some proof. His performance in academics is below average considering how brilliant his father is. He would always be in the list of boys meant to take removal exams in several subjects. Most of the time, he would be caught daydreaming by his teachers instead of listening to the lessons. Somehow, he has a short attention span especially on listening to lectures. When his mind is not into something, he finds it hard to understand it much more to put an effort to excel in it.

He loves watching fantasy series and movies than studying and would often imagine himself in an alternate world where magic and magical beings exist. He has watched every superhero and fantasy movie he knows and even collects some fantasy and comic books. He would often daydream in school but would then be reminded by his teachers that such things only exist in our imagination and he should study instead.

The only thing that he likes at school is playing sports. It"s not like he"s exceptional in sports but he can play any sport and that is the only time where he can feel he belongs when his playmates are happy playing with him. Since, he can play well sometimes even with his small built.

Sometimes, his predictions are right where the ball will go or where he should be able to score. He became an athlete in swimming after being recommended by his dad to the coach in their school and fortunately he has won some contests already.

He loves the water and hates it that today instead of being in the beach they are going to the mountains instead.

„But the river in the mountain may not be that bad," he said to himself. He learned to swim there and the waters are refreshing.

On the physical side it is still taking some time for his parent"s trait to show in him except the eyes. He wished he was taller than most of his classmates by now. He regularly drinks vitamins and jumps from time to time just to get taller but nothing happens. His mom and dad are quite taller than the regular parents in their neighborhood but his height seems to take some time in emerging.

His fair complexion like his mom rather than the tan skin of his father makes him look like most of the kids at school. He may not be as good looking as his mother and he usually keeps his hair messy because with all its curls and waves. It just seems hard to figure how to fix them in place. His hair is like the curls of his mother"s hair and the hardness of his father"s hair combined. „Think about a bad mixture again just like his eyes," he would often say to himself. Somehow, even with the contact lenses he feels people can still see the true color of his eyes.

Although he plays a lot and one of the swimming athletes, he never got to inherit the medium muscular built of his dad. His dad would often say that his muscles would just appear when he is old enough. Still he wished his muscles were harder rather than the soft cushions they are now which becomes favorite bumping pads of boys bigger than him. “What are you thinking about William?” Peter asked.

“Just thinking about the gifts I would receive tomorrow,” William lied looking at the window.

“Well, you"ll have a wonderful gift tomorrow at your birthday,” Sarah replied.

“Will that be a PlayStation 4?” He asked, hoping his parents would finally agree to him playing video games. They would often say that it"s better to play sports than video games, but he still got to play with his friends on some weekends. Fantasy even in games is sometimes better than reality he would often say to his parents whenever he gets caught playing video games at the neighbor"s house.

“Better!” Sarah replied. “It"s a gift from me and your dad.” The sweet sounding voice of his mom makes everything so real and believable that he can"t wait to receive his gift now.

“You can take a nap if you like, your gift would not go away,” Sarah said seeing how his eyes are now sleepy from just looking at the rain. “The trip would still be long. I believe we"re not even halfway from our destination, right Peter?” she continued.

“Yes, you can take a nap, don"t worry your mom will wake you up when we arrive at your uncle"s cabin,” Peter replied as Sarah gave him a sweet look and smile.

„No arguing with that look, there is nothing much to see with all the rain after all," William said to himself.

He got his pillow and slept. Even with the heavy rain he was able to sleep soundly and had a dream about magical lands and magical creatures. How he wished all of these are true and if ever he would get a wish - he"d wish he was an immortal elf guarding a magical forest from evil creatures. He would often ask his mom if elves or other magical creatures exist.

Sarah would just reply that he"ll meet more magical creatures than elves. She said he"d be surprised they"re just like the normal ones he sees every day. Somehow he never got to believe it. It"s just the same old regular people that he meets every day for the past twelve years of his life. They have moved three times already and it has been the same regular type of people in every place.

Sure they are kind like the Asians, courteous like the Europeans and brave like the Americans but they are all regular humans and he has yet to see anyone magical or with powers at least. How he wished his wishes can be real then life would really be exciting.

He didn"t know how long he slept for he was already at the brink of saving a princess in his dreams when the car suddenly came to a stop and he heard a familiar sweet voice.

“William! William! We"re here already time to wake up,” Sarah said as she opens up the light of the car.

Blinded by the bright light he opened the car door and looked outside and he saw his dad unloading their things.

“Care to give me a hand here?” Peter said.

“It does not seem to rain here but the sky sure is dark,” William said as he gets his backpack and goes to his dad.

“It might rain anytime now so let"s hurry up and bring our things inside before we get wet,” as Peter handed him two bags.

William carried the bags inside looking at the place. Much has changed already since their last visit. The pine trees have grown taller that the cabin seems to be a hidden hideout already in the center of the forest. But the smell of the pine trees was still refreshing.

“This might not be a bad vacation after all,” William said to himself.

As he entered the cabin he saw the same old wooden walls of logs. The same wooden chairs and tables with engravings of signs that he cannot understand before are still there. No one seems to tell him about it before no matter how much he asks. They would just reply that it was merely art designs but he never believed them.

There is the stairs at the center going up to the rooms with the kitchen on the right and the living room at the center. At the back of the stairs is another door which goes to the balcony that faces the river. He smells the same odor of wet old wood and knows that in between the logs are engravings of the same signs he sees on the chairs and tables.

At one time during their vacation, he even witnessed some of the signs glowing at night. He even pointed it out to his mom and dad but they just said that it might be the light outside reflecting. Even his Uncle John would just laugh at him for such wild imagination. He knows the signs are real but it"s hard to argue with adults.

“Just put the bags under the stairs William. We"ll arrange them tomorrow after we get some rest. It"s quite late already,” Sarah said placing some of the food they brought at the kitchen.

He placed the bags under the stairs and looked again on the picture filled walls of his dad, aunt and uncle since they were kids. There are new colored pictures at the bottom part which was their last visit together with Uncle John.

„I guess uncle placed it when we left," he said to himself. He never got to meet his grandparents, his mom and dad told him their parents died already before he was born and the only thing that he can see are their pictures. His dad really looks like their father as he stares at one of the black and white pictures on the wall. He never got to meet his Aunt Rachel as well.

His dad says she travels a lot and does not like to stay at one place but
somehow she never got to travel towards their location unlike Uncle John that visits them from time to time even when they were in Asia.

“The pictures does not seem to fade,” as he felt Peter"s hand in his shoulder. “I bet you"re tired already, if you wish to continue your rest you can. I believe you still know your room upstairs,” Peter said.

William smiled “Yes I do,” and proceeded to go up the stairs.

“By the way William,” Peter said “I"m sorry if we did not go to the beach, but I"ll make it up to you someday, ok?” William looked back nods and proceeded to go upstairs.

As he opened up his room he saw the familiar animal pictures on the wall they placed years ago. He heard the rain falling on the rooftop now and saw the tiny droplets on the window in front of his bed. He looked at the window covered by the falling rain and hoped that tomorrow would be a sunny day.

Turning off the lights he saw the bright colored stars they put at the ceiling before. „They still shine even after all these years," he said to himself. His dad always reminded him never to stop wishing to the stars for they do come true if we believe in them. And his mom even pointed to him one night three stars that are shining together and said that those three stars symbolize their family. They even made a replica on the ceiling making these three stars bigger than the rest. William looked at these three bright colored stars took a deep breath and made a wish. “O bright stars, I wish that this vacation would be great,” and as he closed his eyes he fell asleep.

  CHAPTER 2

  PAUL GEO

Deep within the mountains covered in darkness stood a man and a woman waiting.

“What are you thinking about” Rachel asked.

“Nothing,” Paul said. “The others sure are taking their time,” he continued. „Some are just more blessed than others to have the luxury of taking their time," he said to himself.

“You know this is something we don"t do,” Rachel said seeing the anger in Paul"s face. „These men sure are impatient," she said to herself.

“This is just business,” a man replied as he walks out of the shadows. “Some are not blessed as others and some are even forced to do things against their will,” he continued looking at Paul.
