The Eyes of Others

by Mikael Carlson

Boston’s team in Iraq was based loosely on some of the men and women I met while training at Fort Jackson, S.C. There was no shortage of personality in that group, and it was an honor to take some of their antics and character traits and incorporate them into the fictional figures in this novel.

The most memorable of that group is Louisiana, loosely based off of Kenneth, a friend of mine currently serving with the 101st Airborne at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He’s a great NCO and has one of the best senses of humor of anyone I have met in uniform. He is getting close to retirement now, so thank you for your service, Ken.

This book tends to take a negative viewpoint of our nation’s intelligence and law enforcement agencies, namely the FBI and DIA. As with all the men and women who serve our nation in the armed forces and our federal agencies, there are both the good and the bad. Not all of them are careerists like Colby or exercise as much cutthroat ambition as Garrett did. Many of them are great people just doing whatever they can to keep the American people safe from threats.

Much of the description of brain waves, how dreaming works, and techniques for dream recollection and lucid dreaming were well researched and are fundamentally accurate. To my knowledge, there has never been any instances of someone being able to access another’s memories. The mind is still a frontier in that we are only scratching the surface in our understanding how it works and what we are capable of doing as human beings.

Knowing that, I endeavored to deliver a plausible scenario where Boston was able to do this and a reasonable theory as to how. As a nod to the changing understanding our medical professionals are often faced with, it was written that Tara was incorrect in elements of her early theory. Maybe someday we will know if the paranormal ability Boston had is feasible, but in the meantime, I hope I provided enough to make for an interesting story.
