‘Oh. Well that’s disappointing. Maybe remember next time, eh?’

‘Where’s Annabel and Rodney?’ asked Aggie.

‘Another of the EMF meters went off just after yours stopped,’ said Si. ‘So they went in the cell where it was to do a vigil. That one down there.’

‘I can hear something,’ said Jenny.

Max listened. Jenny was right. There was a noise.

‘Sounds like, I dunno, like they’re crying, or something,’ said Aggie. ‘We need to get in there!’

  Oscar shook his head.

  ‘That’s not crying.’

Jenny peeked through the observation hole in the cell door.

‘No, that’s definitely not crying, Aggs.’

  ‘Oh,’ said Aggie. ‘I see.’

Max was walking towards the cell door.

‘What are you doing?’ said Aggie. ‘You don’t want to walk in on that!’

‘No, I don’t,’ he said. ‘But he wants me to. This is why I’m here. This is what he wants me to see.’

‘You could wait until they’re finished!’

Max kept on going. He pushed the door open. Rodney had Annabel up against the wall, her legs wrapped round him, his trousers and pants down around his ankles.

‘Ah, Max!’ said Rodney, looking over his shoulder, still pumping as Annabel gave little yelps. ‘You have used your critical thinking to uncover my secret! Am I not silly? Am I not irrational? Risking my entire reputation on this nonsense, for what? To sexually pleasure my partner who finds all this running about screaming at imagined spooks arousing! But is this not what we do? We are men!’

‘OK,’ said Max, edging his way back out. ‘Nice… to see you.’

‘Expose me, Max! Help me end this madness! I can’t stop myself!’

  Max closed the door.

  * * *

‘So that was what it was all about, then,’ said Aggie. ‘A what-do-you-call-it, sex game?’

  Max nodded.

They walked down the high street, her gloved hand in his cold, red one.

‘Well, I guess however clever he is, he still has the same urges as everyone else, and they do tend to make people do odd things.’

‘Do they now? Have your urges ever made you do odd things?’

‘Oh, yeah,’ said Max. ‘One time at uni, someone said a girl liked me, so before I went down the student union bar, I had a shower, washed my hair but conditioned it way too much because I thought it would look better and it went into a bouffant.’

  Aggie snorted.

‘And then I tried to get it down with hair gel, but I used to much of that and it ended up looking like a crash helmet made out of superglue.’

Aggie through her head back and cackled.

  ‘OK, it’s not that funny.’

‘It is, it really is. I’m thinking of you with that hair and it is funny.’

‘OK, I guess it’s funny. Listen, do you want to do something this weekend. Go to the cinema, or grab a pizza or something? I’m pretty broke, but my Jobseekers comes through on Wednesday.’

‘Oh, I might just have an urge to do something odd and say yes,’ said Aggie.

  She kissed him.

The night wrapped them tightly in silence and stars.
