Wicked Wish (The Royals: Warlock Court Book 2)

Ophelia rolled her shoulders and cracked her neck. “Who’s the target?”
“Dario Malback. He’s the one who tried to kill Beckett and nearly succeeded.” He placed his hand on Cross’ shoulder. “Are you up for this? I can send someone else.”
Cross gave him a single nod but kept his eyes locked on Ophelia. “I’m ready. It’s about time I fulfill my end of the pact, isn’t it, O?”
She reached out and wrapped her hand in his shirt and yanked him to follow her as she turned away. “This is gonna be one hell of a wicked hunt.”
Matteaus turned toward Tucker. “You going to be okay without them for a while?”
“Oh yeah, it’ll be good to take out the leader of the warlock resistance.” Tucker nodded.
I could almost pity Dario . . . almost. Whoever Ophelia was going after didn’t stand a chance against a girl like that. “Guys, I’m not sure he was the leader.”
Matteaus sighed. “I wish you were wrong.” He opened the note Aphrodite gave him then crumbled it up and threw it to the ground. Without another word he walked away from the two of us.
Tucker motioned to the door. “Have you been in yet?”
“No.” I shook my head. “I’m going in now.” I hesitated just outside the door, terrified of what I was about to see.
“Let’s go in together?” He grabbed the knob and pushed the door open then motioned for me to walk in first.
The smell of antiseptic smacked me in the nose as I walked into the room. Niche stood on one side of the bed and Zinnia on the other. Silver magic flowed from her to Beckett in winding streams. When she spotted me, she dropped her hands and sucked in a deep breath. Dark bags hung under her eyes and she staggered toward Tucker. He caught her around the waist and held up at his side. She smiled down at me. “Well done, Astrid, you completed your task.”
“And nearly got Beckett killed.” Guilt sat heavy in my stomach and I hated the feel of it.
“No.” She shook her head. “He’s alive because of you.”
Her sleeves were rolled to her elbows and blood covered her fingers the way they covered mine. But there around her wrist was a tattoo I’d never seen before. I didn’t know why my eye was drawn to it, but it reminded me of the one I’d shown Beckett a long time ago. “Is that a tat binding you to your powers too?”
I moved to Beckett’s side and grabbed up his hand. When no one answered me, I glanced back at them. “What?”
Zinnia forced a smile on her face. “Oh no, this, it’s my soul mate mark. Links me to this guy. He’s got the same one. Show her, babe.” She gave Tuck a little hip bump.
Tucker smiled and moved her toward the door. “Maybe later. I’ll be right back, Astrid. I’m just going to get her some place to rest.”
“She can take my room.” I pointed down the hall. Wait, I don’t live here anymore. “Down the hall.”
As the two of them left, Niche followed behind them. She tossed her mane of red hair over her shoulder and pushed her glasses up her nose. “He’s going to be okay, just needs to rest and heal now.”
“Thank you.” I sat there holding his hand in the silence. I watched the easy rise and fall of his chest. Every breath he took brought him closer to being better. The warmth of the room seeped into me and I tugged my sleeves up. There on my wrist was the mark Beckett told me linked me to my orb. But the orb was done now and I still had it. My pulse quickened as a thought hit me. Can’t be. I tugged up his sleeve and there on his wrist was the exact same mark.
Two lines, one thicker than the other with two circles going through them on the base of his wrist. Ours were identical, his a bit larger than mine, more masculine. A small smile spread on my face and it explained so much. Why I was so drawn to him, why he frustrated me more than anyone, and why he evoked such strong emotions. We belonged to each other. He was mine and I was is. I chuckled and new tears ran down my cheeks. I leaned over and pressed a small kiss to his wrist right over the mark.
I froze. Hold up. He knew . . . he knew the whole time and he didn’t tell me. Why would he not tell me? Why keep this a secret? Why lie? I dropped his hand and sat up straight. Of all the times he told me we had to be honest with each other, we had to trust each other. Hypocrite! I wanted to yell, scream, and cry all at the same time. How could he do this? To me? To us? He kept them hidden with his own magic so I wouldn’t know, so no one else would know. Was he ashamed of me? Of us? My head swam with a thousand questions he couldn’t answer. Questions he could’ve answered.
I rose from his bedside and began to pace back and forth at the foot of the bed. After everything we’d been through, we were in a good place. A place I thought was a new beginning for us. How could that be when it was all based on a lie?
I froze at the foot of his bed and called upon my magic. “If it’s lies you want, it’s lies you’ll get.”
I wasn’t angry. I was livid. And after all of Matteaus’ lessons I learned to control my impulses. I wouldn’t fight or scream at him. My power crept across the bed toward his wrist. It wrapped around it and the soul mate mark was hidden just the way he’d hidden mine. I wound it around my own wrist and masked mine as well. If he wanted it to be a secret then a secret it would remain. If he wanted lies between us then lies there would be. I was calm, cool, and collected. This wasn’t a time for impulse, this was a time for tact, plotting . . . total control.
“So many wicked lies you tell, my love . . . two can play at that game. I am after all a warlock . . .”
Astrid finally has her soulmate mark and knows what it means. What will happen when Beckett wakes up? How will Astrid handle his secrets? Find out in book three of The Royals: Warlock Court, Wicked Lies.
